SECTION : OPERATION (BSM)
WORK INSTRUCTION FOR ROLL INSPECTION AND TURNING
A. New Rolls : Inspection
1 After receiving new rolls, Check the roll numbers according to the test certificate given by the supplier for each rolls.
2 Check dimensions, hardness and other parameters with respect to roll drawing & record the same in the roll inspection Sheet-
3 Record any deviation , If deviations are acceptable as per drawing roll is considered as acceptable.If deviations are not acceptable,
4 Acceptable rolls are kept in shop floor/ its sotrage area.
5 Roll History card BSM( RS) F-03 is prepared for this roll with all relevant details.
B. Groove Cutting
6 Roll shop incharge informs roll turner, roll number and groove detalis to be machined on pair of rolls. Prograame is also given to CNC roll
turner.
7 Roll Dressing Card BSM (RS)-F 04 is made with all relevant details for the rolls.
8 Give the reference point on roll.before starting machine.
9 Load the programme given by Incharge Roll Shop.
10 Check simulation for the programme.
11 Set the jaws depending on the roll to be turned.
12 Load the roll on the CNC with the help of E.O.T Crane.
13 Close the steady rest.
14 Roll is mounted on machine between head and tail stock. Check run out with the help of dial indicator. Maximum run out tolerance 0.05
15 Set the tool holder and offset ‘x’axis and ‘z’axis.
16 Use appropriate cutting tools for grooves cutting.
17 Set the RPM and feed.
18 Run the Programme and reduce material min. 2 mm per side and finally a light cut for finishing the grooves.If any deviation in finishing of
passes take more cut as per requirement.
19 After completion the grooving check the final dia.
20 Checked the all grooves by the template.
21 In case of new Roll, machine outer surface of the barrel to achieve uniform diameter.
22 In case of used Roll decide the depth of cutting by checking the groove for maximum wear.
23 Mark bottom roll with single line on periphery towards drive side collar for its identification.
24 In case of any deviation inform Incharge Roll Shop and take his clearance.
After the inspection is over for surface finish and the rolls are found OK.Unload the rolls from machine. If the roll grooving are defective

rectify it in consultation with Incharge Roll Shop.
26Any defective Groove is marked with ‘RED’ paint for easy identification.
27Roll is now ready for use, This is sent to either roll storage area or roll shop for assembly..
