Industry Analysis Paper

The Industry I will be analyzing is the Graphic Design industry, there are various types of

companies that need Graphic Designers. Graphic Design is important as it makes sure you

communicate with people efficiently. Graphic Design is used in many ways in today’s age as

many industries are trying to build their brand online. The major corporations within the industry

are Apple, Buzzfeed, and many others. The need for Graphic Design is new as many more

businesses and companies are turning to an online world.

Apple is one of the many companies that employ Graphic Designers to sell their

products. With their seamless product designs, website designs and package design it is no

wonder Apple is one of the industries leading sellers in technology. Apple’s main headquarters is

located in Cupertino, CA. Apple has many branch offices located in the United States, France,

Tokyo and many more. Apple employs more than 90,000 employees in all of the 50 states. The

products that Apple supplies are smartphones, tablets, laptops, computers, and accessories. Apple

first started selling computers as they were the ones who revolutionized the way we use and

interact with our computers, they also revolutionized the way we use our smartphones. The

company Apple is well known for its brand due to the seamless way users can use their software

and product.
Apple “was founded on April 1, 1976, by college dropouts Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, who

brought to the new company a vision of changing the way people viewed computers.” Since the

start of the company not much has changed as they have only expanded on the type of devices

they offer, meanwhile also expanding their company in different countries. They have mostly

expanded the products they offer from the beginning of their establishment to selling iPhones,

Ipad’s, Ipod’s, AirPods, beats, and many more.

The current people in charge of Apple are not the people who founded Apple in 1976.

The current CEO in charge of Apple is Tim Cook, Katherine Adams is the Senior Vice President

and General Counsel, Craig Federighi is senior vice president of software engineering, Eddy Cue

is senior vice president Internet software and services, John Giannandrea is senior vice president

machine learning and AI strategy, Sabih Khan is senior vice president of operations, Luca

Maestri is Senior Vice President and Chief financial officer, Deirdre O’Brien is senior Vice

President Retail and people, Dan Riccio is senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering,

Philip W. Schiller is Senior Vice President of worldwide marketing, Johnny Srouji is senior Vice

President of Hardware technologies, Jeff Williams is Chief operating officer.

The top sellers for Apple are their iPhones and right behind the iPhone is the Ipad and the

Mac computers. The products are currently not selling well due to the cost of the products, as

they keep on making more updates to their phones their products end up being more expensive.

The company’s reputation for customer relations is top-notch as they tend to be good with

customers who always come back for their products. Apple’s reputation is average as they don’t

have many employers who complain about the company as it holds a good reputation by their

employees. Apple as a whole company is doing well financially they are still one of the top
companies in the smartphone market and they are continuing to expand on their brand. The field

for Apple is still growing as they continue to make their products they continue to make good

profits. They have plenty of positions open at their company from retail to some management

positions in the company.

The particular job I am interested in for the company at Apple is part of the

Communications Design department is Graphic Design. The general approach I will take to

obtain a job in this field is to focus on my education plan, and prepare. I have already taken

sixty-semester credits which include this spring semester. The classes I will take for the fall

semester of 2020 are CST 252 Scripting for Multimedia, VPA Photography as Art, CART 230

The Art of Storytelling, and CART 361 Intro to Editing. Scripting for Multimedia is a class

where I will be broadening my understanding and knowledge on website design and making a

website from scratch. VPA Photography as Art is a core class I will take to improve my skills in

photoshop and photography. CART 230 is a class I will be taking to improve on my skills for

making videos. CART 361 is a class I will take for editing films since I am also trying to better

my skills as an editor. As far as the rest of my semesters I am still planning my classes and will

hopefully finish most of my classes by the year 2022. Most of my core classes will prepare me as

they are preparing me to make designs from logos, magazines, brochures, flyers, and websites.

Most of my electives will prepare me with communication as some of the classes I have taken

are mostly for communicating whether it be through speech or writing.

Outside of school I have already bought a camera, made an Instagram page for my

designs and edits. I am currently trying to build my portfolio through my Instagram page, I am

also planning to make my webpage to include as part of my portfolio. The areas I plan on
working outside of school are applications like Illustrator and Photoshop, as well as my website

through coding with HTML and CSS. There are also plans in place for me to build my portfolio

by doing work with people who need logos for their companies or simply helping them update

their website to bring more revenue. Since there is also a growing platform in social media there

are also options to reach out to more people for a brand.

Currently, I am looking for internships for me to get my foot on the door to my dream

job. I currently only know a couple of people in the Graphic Design industry so I am trying to

network to be able to find an internship during the summer. I am currently working two part-time

jobs that are not related to my field, but for one job I can network with different people as I am

learning how to network, for the other job I am mostly trying to network with teachers who know

people in the industry. I have a lead on a teacher I can talk to at my job who has a friend who

works in San Francisco and does the type of work I am trying to acquire. One of the problems

with the industry is that not a lot of jobs are offered where I live, as most of the jobs are about

agriculture. Most of the jobs in the graphic design industry would be in bigger cities like San

Francisco, San Jose, and Silicon Valley.

I am interested in the field of graphic design because when in high school I took a

graphic design class. I initially hated the class because it was hard, I did not understand how to

use many of the applications, but I believe the part that was hard made me like it even more.

Being able to struggle made me love graphic design, and learning how I could do many things

with graphic design. Designing and creativity is something we all see through social media, but

being able to implement those types of feats shown is something that feels great as it shows you

are learning something new each day.

 There are some problems within the graphic design industry which are the demands and

needs of graphic designers. There are not many jobs available in the Monterey Bay as there are

more jobs in Silicon Valley where many designers can design for companies like Apple, and

many more. As more graphic designers learn more applications and the way people design is

updated many graphic designers are less in demand due to many more applications becoming

available for people who can use them to make logos, and many other things associated with

design
