Problem 1
A viewing screen is separated from double-slit source by 1.5 m. The distance between the two slits is
0.030 mm. The second-order bright fringe ( m = 3 ) is 6.5 cm from the center line
A. Determine the wavlength of the light
B. Calculate the distance between adjacent brigth fringes
Problem 2
A light source emits visible light of two wavelength 𝜆 = 455 nm and 𝜆′ = 630 nm. The source is used
in a double-slit interference experiment in which L = 1.00 m and d = 0.0050 mm. Find the separation
distance between the third-order bright fringes
Problem 3
Calculate the minimum thickness of a soap-bubble film that result in constructive interference in the
reflected light if the film is illuminated with light whose wavelength in free space is 𝜆 = 630 nm

SOLUTIONS
Problem 1
A. Determine the wavlength of the light
𝑚 = 3 ; 𝑦𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑔𝑡ℎ = 6.5 𝑥 10−2 𝑚 ; 𝐿 = 1.5 𝑚 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑑 = 3.0 𝑥 10−5 𝑚
𝑦𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑑 (6.5 𝑥 10 −2 𝑚)(3.0 𝑥 10−5 𝑚 )
𝜆= =
𝑚𝐿 2(1.5 𝑚)
= 6.5 𝑥 10−7 𝑚 = 650 𝑛𝑚

B. Calculate the distance between adjacent brigth fringes

𝜆𝐿 𝜆𝐿
𝑦𝑚+1 − 𝑦𝑚 = (𝑚 + 1) − 𝑚
𝑑 𝑑
𝜆𝐿 (6.5 𝑥 10 −7 𝑚)(1.5 𝑚)
= =
𝑑 (3.0 𝑥 10−5 𝑚)
= 3.25 𝑥 10−2 𝑚 = 3.25 𝑐𝑚
Problem 2
𝜆𝐿 (455 𝑥 10−9 𝑚)(1.00 𝑚)
𝑦𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 = 𝑚=3
𝑑 0.0050 𝑥 10−3 𝑚
= 9.1 𝑥 10−2 𝑚
𝜆′𝐿 (630 𝑥 10−9 𝑚)(1.00 𝑚)
𝑦′𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 = 𝑚=3
𝑑 0.0050 𝑥 10−3 𝑚
= 12.6 𝑥 10−2 𝑚
Hence the separation distance between the two fringes is
Δ𝑦 = 12.6 𝑥 10−2 𝑚 − 9.1 𝑥 10 −2 𝑚
= 3.5 𝑥 10−2 𝑚 = 3.50 𝑐𝑚

Problem 3
𝜆 630 𝑛𝑚
𝑡= = = 118.4 𝑛𝑚
4𝑛 4(1.33)
