1. INTRODUCTION (Written for you by Prof Eccles)
In assignment 2 we debated the fact that Whitey Basson earned R 620 million in 2010. In the final
analysis we were asked two questions:
“2. What do you think about Whitey Basson earning ZAR 620,000,000.00?”
“3. Why do you think this?”
In effect we were asked to present an argument (the answer to question 3) supporting a conclusion (the
answer to question 2).
Those who had no real problem with someone earning that amount of money; OR
Those who had a real problem with someone earning that sort of money.
2. A BAD ARGUMENT
<
What you need to do in this section is go back to the Assignment 2 discussion forum and find a
submission from one of your fellow students who presented the opposite opinion to what you think.
In other words, if you think there is no problem with someone earning R 620 million in a year then
choose an assignment where the student argues that there is a problem. Or if you think there is a
problem, choose an assignment where the student argues that there is no problem.
We want you to copy the section of this assignment where the student answered the questions: “2.
What do you think about Whitey Basson earning ZAR 620,000,000.00?”and “3. Why do you think this?”
and paste it here.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU PUT THIS IN INVERTED COMMAS (“) AND THAT YOU PUT THE NAME OF THE
STUDENT WHO SUBMITTED IT

N LUBISI said “There are rare talented people like Basson,he is one of the people who really work hard
to achieve their goals. I believe he invested his time and also put more effort on making sure that
Shoprite is doing well. So in my opinion I believe that for him to earn such an amount it’s a reward for
his services.
QUESTION 3
WHY DO YOU THINK THIS?
“In my view, I believe that Whitey is a true definition of the people who really work hard to achieve their
goals and on this case he is working hard to achieve the company's goals. He invested his time studying
and acquiring more relevant business successfully and also put focus on what he wanted to achieve in
life, this kind of remuneration is good to thank him for his hard work. Any company needs someone who
will help them to build their mission and vision which they set within their companies. In this case I
believe that Whitey is making more for Shoprite compare to what they are paying him. Whitey is
working hard to make sure that Shoprite is not losing but gaining and also making more profit, this will
lead Shoprite to create more jobs opportunities by opening more shop outlets and hiring more staff.
The amount that Whitey is earning will also attract Investors because investors only want to invest in the
company that is doing well on the market by doing so also our economy will grow.
