ABSTRACT:
Fresh water available for mankind is 2.5% out of which 87% of this fresh surface water, so
availability of fresh water for human use is very less, due to the reduction of number of lakes
therefore restoration of polluted lakes have to be done to protect the available fresh surface
lakes. When restoration of polluted lakes are done there will be increase in the amount of
available fresh water, including the increase in the ground water quantity, protection of
aquatic life could be achieved.
NFSC method is nothing but nitrification-de-nitrification filtration struvite crystallization and
coagulant. This method when used for restoration of lake will increase the quality of lake,
protect aquatic life and also increase ground water quantity. The main advantage of this
method is that simultaneous production of fertilizer through struvite crystallization. Where
the fertilizer contain more amount of phosphate, which is much more efficient than rock
phosphate. Restoration of lake is done for such lake where there exists more amount of
nutrients, nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous. This nutrients will be available in lakes
when there is excess amount of sewage waste dumped into lakes. By using NFCS method
removal of nutrients, recycling of waste water into useful water having portable limits can be
obtained.
Pilot scale setup was fabricated based on the literature studied were conducted on the lentic
lake i.e. Bayapanahalli lake present near Vajarahalli, Karnataka in which the nitrate and
phosphate content was higher than standard drinking level. Restoration of this lake water was
done in a cyclic process. Where this water was treated using a reactor to which marble
powder was added as an agent for struvite crystallization. The obtained sludge from treatment
of water i.e. from the reactor was used as a fertilizer for plant growth. When compared to the
use of normal fertilizer plant growth was more using this sludge. With simultaneous filtration
using filter media and nitrification with help of nitobacter and nitrosomonas was conducted
where this water lead to maximum reduction of nitrates and phosphate (around 97%
reduction) . By the continues cyclic process of lake water lead to total reduction of nitrates
and phosphates.
By this it can be stated that due to restoration of lake the amount of nitrates and phosphates
can be reduced to nill and due to the usage of nitobacter and nitrosomonas will help in the
removal of ammonia and nitrate content in water which lead to reduction of eurtrophication
and also removal of it.
