UNIT 5 : FORCES

FORCES

We can not see them but they affect objects. Forces make objects: move, stop, stay still,
change shape, etc.

TYPES OF FORCES
CONTACT and NON-CONTACT BALANCED and UNBALANCED
CONTACT
It means one object or person moves another by touching it. BALANCED
Balance forces mean they are equal and
Some push and pull forces are contact forces. Ex: kicking a ball, opening a door, etc. opposite.
Force A= Force B
Upthrust: It is a push force applied by water and air. It pushes objects in air and water up. Archimedes discovered it.
Remember: mass: small mass objects mean a lot of upthrust// large mass objects mean less upthrust. UNBALANCED
Volume: small volume objects mean less upthrust// large volume objects mean a lot of upthrust. Unbalanced forces mean that they are
different, not equal.
NON-CONTACT FORCES
These forces move objects without touching them.

Magnetism: when a magnet (natural or man-made) moves an object (pull or push it) without touching it.
Magnets create magnetic fields . They have two ends or poles: N (North) and S (South). Opposites poles of
magnets (N-S or S-N) attract but the same poles repel.

Gravity: It is a force that pulls masses toward their centre. The Earth has gravity (that is why we don´t float), even the Sun has
gravity and holds the planets of the Solar system (remember the video). Newton discovered it .
When we talk about gravity, it is very important distinguish between mass: the amount of matter (Kg) and
Weight: mass X gravity= N (Newtons)
So weight is a FORCE but mass NO.
