Some years ago, "new math" took the country's classrooms by storm. Based on the abstract, general
style of mathematical exposition favored by research mathematicians, its goal was to teach students not
just to manipulate numbers and formulas, but to grasp the underlying mathematical concepts. The result,
at least at first, was a great deal of confusion among teachers, students, and parents. Since then, the
negative aspects of "new math" have been eliminated and its positive elements assimilated into

What did Professor Stewart say?

Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2014

My review joins the chorus of praise for Dr. Stewart's Concepts of Modern Mathematics
("Concepts"). It has been many years since I put down my slide rule and picked up my math
diploma. I wanted a refresher and turned to Concepts for help. Its stated purpose is to spread the
concepts underlying the "New Math" to a non-specialized audience. Concepts was the perfect
choice.

Concepts is organized into twenty short chapters. Dr. Stewart's writing style is informal,

enthusiastic, and conversational with a spot of humor. He stresses the primacy of intuition, the role
of experimentation in proving utility and the need for rigor when complexity multiplies. In mixing
these factors, Dr. Stewart reveals glimpses of how a mathematician works. Abstract algebra,
topology and analysis are the "cornerstones" of modern mathematics. The first nine chapters are
devoted to an introduction and to teaching axiomatic set-theory at the heart of the "New Math". As
Dr. Stewart quips, to study French literature, one must know the French language. Topology is
covered in four chapters, real analysis in only one, and applications in five.

I plan on rereading this book to ensure I understand all of the concepts. I enjoyed the writing style
and it helped with a few of the concepts that I had not been exposed to yet.

I read this book lacking a lot of math knowledge, and found it engaging and easily readable. Props
to the author for accomplishing a very difficult task.

I cannot praise Ian Stewart enough for giving me a great new interest in
mathematics

I wish I had discovered Ian Stewart when I was still in school. His texts are accessible but deep
enough to give the reader an educated interest in various fields of mathematics. This book kindled
a love for math in me. I think everyone should read at least one book by Ian Stewart.

This is the third Stewart book I've read, and I'm looking forward to reading more of his work. This
book would be a great follower to his work on the 25 mathematicians.

Great book on the Concepts of Modern Mathematics

This book deservers to be in everyone's collection. Taking classes in my undergrad program did not
answer fully the concepts of modern mathematics, which a residue of questions were hanging in
my mind. This book explains concepts on topics as functions and set theory so easily, it can be
explain to a child. Unlike most College course books, this book does not try to impress you with
huge calculations or abstractions, but leaves the reader loving Math more and more.

Absolutely brilliant!

Deserves 10 stars. Here is an author who understands so many advanced concepts and who can
write smoothly, clearly and convincingly, bearing the reader along with his keen and interesting
mind. Convincingly demonstrates the interrelationships between different areas of modern
mathematics. Great mathematics for the layman without being in the slightest bit condescending. I
have had an amateur's interest in mathematics since high school but was never able to follow it up
professionally. This book is the best I have read in the 30 years I have had this interest. A delight to
read, educational and informative.

sound accumulation of early degree math syllabus

This book is a 'Dover' paperback which, if your have not bought from this publisher before, they
tend to re-publish math books previously sold from around the world. Their budget-priced books
tend to be in b&w and graphs in grayscale.

First Impressions

What stands out the most is the VERY attractive, organised exploration of linked math topics from
the earliest chapters and throughout the book. Its clear the author encourages some theoretical
issues before 'labouring' with calculations.

For example, i am attracted at the quick and early linking between 'Sets', 'Functions', 'Group Theory'
and (MOD), and 'axiom' mathematics. The reason being if you are up to understanding these
connections with the first three areas, then the way the axiom stuff is handled gives a VERY clear
way in answering many math problems that are a model for throughout your future studies! The
other linear algebraic stuff is (i.m.h.o) less attractive - compaired to other authors - but still well-

I'm only getting through the early chapters of this book but am finding it is reigniting my interest
in maths again. The book explains each theorem in a very practical way and as I have been covering
a maths class related to the gaming industry, the material is already helping me to plan lessons in a
way that is more stimulating for the students. Highly recommend.

Very Interesting/ Requires a little more prerequisite knowledge than it lets on

I was slightly dubious about buying this book based on some of the previous reviews. Mainly ones
that suggested the explanations weren't complete or rigorous enough. After reading the book I

now consider those views unfounded, I feel in any given deduction or proof there is ample
explanation to follow his logic and arrive at the same conclusions.

Overall I found the book very enjoyable, especially the broad content as I had never dealt with
topics like topology before. I was glued to it in a similar way to when I read a good novel. I would
like to add that IMO a higher level of prerequisite knowledge than is quoted in the description is
needed, as there is very little background information/techniques covered.
