Uso del Simple Past (Pasado Simple en inglés)

A la hora de usar el Past Simple, ten siempre en mente que hay dos tipos de verbos. Los verbos regulares forman su
Past Simple añadiendo -ed al infinitivo del verbo. Por el contrario, los verbos irregulares nos obligan a recordar su
forma en Past Simple, ya que no existe ninguna norma que los regule. Veamos algunas oraciones en simple past:

 I play tennis – I played tennis (Yo juego a tenis – Yo jugaba a tenis). «Play» es un verbo regular.

 I see you – I saw you (Te veo – Te vi). «See» es un verbo irregular.

Aun así, no siempre es tan simple como añadir -ed a los verbos regulares. Hay algunas normal que debemos conocer
para no cometer errores.

NORMAS para los regular verbs (verbos regulares en inglés)

1. Si los verbos terminan en -e añadimos solo una -d.

 Like – liked (gustar)

2. Si los verbos terminan en consonante + Y, escribiremos -ied (quitamos la Y).

 cry – cried (llorar)

3. Si los verbos terminan en vocal + Y, añadimos -ed (después de la Y).

 play – played (jugar)

3. Si los verbos terminan en -c, añadimos -ked al final.

 panic – panicked (aterrorizarse)

4. Si los verbos solo contienen 1 vocal y ésta va seguida de 1 consonante, doblamos la consonante y añadimos –ed.

 stop – stopped (parar)

5. Pero si se trata de dos vocales + consonante, no doblamos la consonante.

  pour – poured (derramar)

6. Tampoco doblaremos la consonante cuando la palabra no sea aguda. Solo doblamos cuando la última sílaba es
tónica (palabra aguda).

 visit – visited (visitar) – «vi» es la sílaba tónica de la palabra. Así pues, no doblamos la consonante («t»)
porqué se está en la sílaba átona.

El negativo del Past Simple

El negativo lo formamos con la partícula didn’t justo delante del verbo en infinitivo (no añadimos -ed al verbo
regular ni buscamos la forma del pasado en la lista de verbos irregulares. Usamos el infinitivo solo).

 I didn’t run (No corrí).

 I didn’t cry (No lloré).

En interrogativo del Past Simple

Para el interrogativo añadimos did delante de todo de la oración (delante del sujeto). En este caso también
dejaremos en verbo en infinitivo (sin -ed para los regulares ni verbo irregular en pasado). Veamos un par de
oraciones en simple past en forma interrogativa.

 Did you cry? (¿Lloraste?).

 Did you run? (¿Corriste?).
