Block diagram of the AWD Data Link

The All Wheel Drive (AWD) ECM uses two data links for communication. The data links are not visible
components. The data link consists of the following:

z Internal ECM circuits

z Harness wiring

z Harness connectors

The data link is bidirectional. The AWD ECM can send information and the AWD ECM can receive
information.

The AWD ECM communicates over the two data links that are present on the machine. The two types of data
links are listed below.

z Cat data link

z SAE J1939 (CAN) data link

Communication between the AWD ECM and the other electronic control modules that are listed below is
conducted over the Cat data link.

z Engine ECM

z Transmission ECM

z Implement ECM

The ECM may be flashed over the Cat Data Link, but flashing over the SAE J1939 connection is faster than
the Cat Data Link.

SAE J1939 (CAN) Data Link

Communication between the AWD ECM and Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) is conducted over the
SAE J1939 (CAN) data link. This connection can be used in order to flash the AWD ECM.

Data Link Diagnostics

The Cat data link is monitored by the AWD ECM for abnormal circuit conditions. The AWD ECM will
activate diagnostic codes for a specific ECM when an abnormal condition is detected. See the Troubleshooting
Section of this manual for details on diagnostics.
