Once you´ve heard it, write down a summary of each question Alan is asked.
1st question,
What’s de most important for you, the engineering, the robotics or ethics being an ethicist?
Alan says he’s an engineer so that he brings an engineering’s perspective about it. However,
Nowadays half of his work is thinking about. He becomes worried about this matter.
2nd question,
According to Alan, AI (Artificial Intelligence) doesn’t have a satisfactory definition for the
natural intelligence, but we can define intelligence as “doing the right thing at the right time”.
Nevertheless, intelligence is not only one thing we have but more.
3rd question,
Definition of thinking.
4th question,
Human brain.
Alan tell us that the human brain is the most complex mechanism we know in the universe. In
a not long time period, human will be able to design devices similar to human brains, even
working into a human body. The main problem is the architecture or design of our brain, by far
the most complex issue to achieve the project.
5th question,
Alan differs from one colleague’s statement about if we are under threat of AI. Alan says,
neither we understand what natural intelligence is nor we have a scientific theory. In order to
avoid problems all research must be done ethically.
6th question,
Driverless cars.
Driverless cars is said to be a breakthrough in the near future. Alan point out that on the one
hand can help to decrease people killed in car’s accidents and on the other hand elderly and
disable people will be able to driver safely. Despite the fact that in some situations driverless
car’s AI must take the right decision over a hypothetical car’s accident which involves people,
Alan point out there in no differences between this decision and human’s decisions. New rules
must be fitted in this cases. He compares driverless car’s autopilot with the ones in aircrafts.
In his owns words, both should be subject to the same levels of complains with safety
standards.
7th question
In his opinion, it won’t happen because peculiar human’s characteristics as empathy, sympathy
innovation intuition etc. Therefore, jobs in which these skills are needed wouldn’t be in
danger. Speaking about the concern of using A.I in warfare or other matters, he thinks this is
an unlikely event. What makes attractive science- fiction is the fear and fascination.
