Google’s Android operating system accounts for a vast majority in today’s smartphone
market. In recent times, many Android flagship smartphones come with 6GB of DDR4 RAM,
equivalent to the RAM available on a normal laptop. Alongside, while the user may still be using
a Full HD television at home, the screen resolution on top tier smartphones has been moved to
2K and in some cases, even 4K. The camera quality has also improved massively, and is steadily
progressing with each new smartphone. With all of these in mind, there are a lot of options to go

India is the leading and second largest smartphone market in the world, Samsung and
Apple’s dominance on India’s luxury smartphone market. The Samsung Electronics and Apple
Inc are the two largest manufacturers of smartphones in the world, followed by Huawei
Technologies and other Chinese electronics company such as Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and OnePlus.

2.4.1 Samsung

Samsung Electronics is a South Korea-based company founded in 1969 as a part of


Samsung Group. Apart from being one of the largest manufacturers of smartphones and tablets,
the company also develops, manufactures and sells other consumer products as well. As of Q3
2012, Samsung is the largest manufacturer of devices running Google Android with a 46 per cent
market shares. The latest Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker by IDC for Q3 2017 reveals
that Samsung captured a 23.5 percent market share in the last quarter.

The market research firm added Samsung which had a ‘record-breaking quarter’ where it
registered 39 per cent sequential growth quarter-on-quarter and 23 percent year-on-year. The
company’s budget helped the company sustain its top spot.
According to the IDC report, some of Samsung’s bestselling models, the Samsung
Galaxy J2, Samsung Galaxy J7 Nxt, and Samsung Galaxy J7 Max had contributed to almost 60
per cent of the volume for the company to become the top Mobile Phone Companies in India.
“Sustained J-series shipments to its established offline distribution partners ensured that it stayed
on top,” as per the report.

2.4.2 Xiaomi Mobile

Xiaomi released its first smartphone in August 2011 and has rapidly gained market share
in China. It becoming China’s largest smartphone company in 2014. As of 2018, Xiaomi is the
world’s 5th largest smartphone company.Xiaomi has revolutionised the budget smartphone
market in India as well, both with their phones and their unique marketing strategies like
exclusive launches and flash sales. Their budget offerings are loved by the Indian audience and
they sell millions of devices each year in India itself. There are a lot of reasons that favor the
company.
