The Future World
The main focal point of the visual is a large tree. The tree represents the separation of
social classes in a future world. The rich families are placed at the top of our tree to
demonstrate how they dominate society. The poor families are below the base of the tree due to
their extreme lack of success, putting them off of the diagram. There won’t be a middle class
because it is very likely that when society gets to this point, the middle class will be gone due to
poverty, low income, poor government, and overpopulation. The families’ personalities and how
they act towards one another will not change. The rich will still have a somewhat hectic and
chaotic family due to technology distracting them from reality. On the other hand, the poor
families maintain their very close bond with one another, something vital to survival. Included is
the rich family arguing to symbolize how they will never become a close, stable family. The
holding of each other’s hands represents how the poor families will stick together and continue
to make it through life, even though they aren’t millionaires. As in the Ancien Régime of
PreRevolutionary France, history repeats itself and social classes spread further and further
apart.
WIth the separation of social class comes the separation of a green Earth to a dreary,
brown one. The dead, barren tree transitions family life into the environment of the future. Due
to the lack of efficiency of today’s people, the future will have a very poor environment. The
quick industrialization and deforestation will soon lead to a completely metal world and nature
will cease to exist. All that will be seen on the horizon is nothing because the horizon won’t be
visible through all of the buildings and smog. Also, the extreme waste problem we have today
will be exponentially worse in the future. There will be entire cities dedicated to making waste
hills and nuclear dumps. The few species of living things other than humans will be dwindling in
numbers. Since all of the natural resources have been used up, nuclear energy will be the only
option. Along with resources being used up, most of the water will be gone and there won’t be
any plants to produce oxygen. To survive, people had to create machines that
synthesized/broke matter to make oxygen and water. Earth will transition from nature to
machine.
Fahrenheit 451 i
The future world of Ray Bradbury’s s very different than that of the one
described in this paper, but some similarities are present. For example, the social class in
Bradbury’s future world are very separated. There are those who read and live in poverty and
there are those who despise books and live in technologically savvy households. Faber says, “I
don’t talk things sir, I talk the meaning of things” (Bradbury 75). Faber is one of those who reads
books, the kind of person that would be in the low class of the predicted future world. Although
he is low class and cast out, he has a life of meaning. The rich and fancy people that don’t read
books have no real meaning or love. Another way the two future worlds are similar is how the
majority of people enjoy destroying things. In Bradbury’s world, Montag says, “It was a pleasure
to burn” (Bradbury 1). Montag enjoyed burning books, and in turn, the houses they were in.
Much like this, the people in the predicted future world like to destroy nature and replace it with
metal. In both worlds, the inhabitants enjoy destroying things of beauty, not caring for the
consequences. Those are only a couple of ways that the two worlds are connected. Many more
can be made, but they are not as evident. A pattern is emerging in the predicted futures from
various minds and it’s not looking too bright.
