The manifestations and consequences of otherings in Froude calls for an expansion of the
white superiority and the increase of white population when they colonize the country.
Natural superiority of the white is expressed in this story and the colonized, which are the
blacks, are inferior. The consequences of being a black person in an uncivilized country is
punishment because the blacks get dehumanized and belittled their entire lives. If your
appearance, or skin color is black, you are considered a dirty person and aren’t considered a
normal person nor treated equally. You are seen as an animal since you “blend in” with
animals and have no morals, values, culture, etc. Being part of the black race, you are
immediately portrayed as the weaker race. On the other hand, being white makes you
superior, and this refers to the concept of classicism. The black people and whites were
born to be poor and rich because that was the way it as supposed to be. When your white,
you are immediately considered intelligent, civilized, honorable, ambitious, whereas if you
are black you are considered uncivilized, lazy, and not intelligent. Black people are
subjugated, belittled, and very much dehumanized. They are treated like garbage just
because of their skin color, and aren’t given a chance in this world. They are considered
specimen, and this is degrading and humiliating to them because they aren’t even seen as
the same species as the whites, even though they are the same, the only difference is your
skin color. Colonizers believe that they are oppressed and need help since they lack the
advantages on the cultural and educational level. The concept of otherings has been
implemented to allow other colonies to colonize the inferior and enforce superiority to the
colonizers.

In Equiano, the concept of otherings is also similar to Froude. The slaves were seen as they
though they have no importance in this life, and their only purpose is to serve the whites
and become their slaves. They are portrayed as merchandise being sold to people, and this
is dehumanizing. The slaves were seen as filthy, with no concept of cleanliness, while the
whites were clean. The slaves were all put together at the bottom of the ship and were did
not have a place above the ship like the others. They were seen as cargo. They were inferior
and dominated by the whites and were treated unjust. They weren’t even allowed to eat
real meals, only scraps, and the only reason they were allowed to eat little amount of food is
to keep them alive, so they can be an instrument of labor. The slaves are objectified, no
matter what your race, gender, religion is they are objectified and sold as merchandise. This
contributes to the Marxist theory. They white people see the blacks as savages and the
blacks see the whites as their masters. The slaves are shown brutal cruelty. Equiano
represents himself as an object between men, being sold to others, unable to own anything
and unable to defend himself or testify against the superior white men.

Both stories show the manifestation and concept of otherings by portraying how slaves are
treated and the white people determine their path and purpose in life. The black people in
this world have always been treated unequally and have always been dehumanized and
belittled just because they have a different skin color. They are shown as inferior, less than a
human. They are different than others, and seen as uncivilized, savages, unintelligent, and
are objectified.
