La serie è tratta da una storia vera , quella di Gypsy Rose Blanchard che per anni ha vissuto un rapporto
malato con la propria madre , una donna mentalmente instabile di nome Dee Dee .La storia si basa sul
tentativo della ragazza di essere indipendente , durante questo tentativo scopre un ’oscura verità . Gypsy
era una bambina normale finchè non le vengono diagnosticate varie malattie , lei era costretta a stare su
una sedia a rotelle e aveva varie allergie che non le permettevano di mangiare dalla bocca .Per questo
motivo lei e la madre ricevevano molte donazioni dalle organizzazioni benefiche, le quali dopo l’uragano
Katrina, costruirono a loro una casa a Springfield . La vita di Gypsy non era molto felice; non poteva andare
a scuola , per volontà della mamma doveva stare sulla sedia a rotelle pur sapendo camminare, veniva
trattata come una bambina di 7 anni , anche se non aveva problemi mentali e le si aspettava un futuro
altrettanto infelice perché la mamma aveva intenzione di farla continuare a vivere così .Nel 2012 la
ragazza aveva iniziato a chattare di nascosto con un ragazzo di nome Nicholas, conosciuto su un sito d’
incontri , in seguito organizzarono un appuntamento , in cui alla presenza di Dee Dee, dovevano fingersi di
vedersi per la prima volta . Dopo quell’occasione i 2 continuarono a sentirsi su internet e si organizzarono
per uccidere Dee Dee . Così, nel giugno 2015, Nicholas si appostò all’interno di casa Blanchard e, con varie
coltellate, uccise Dee Dee . Lo scopo di Gypsy e Nicholas era quello di andare a casa sua e, successivamente,
sposarsi, ma furono scoperti dalla polizia , grazie ai video della sorveglianza nei luoghi dove erano passati .
Nel corso del processo Gypsy scopre di non essere mai stata affetta da alcuna malattia e che la madre aveva
finto su tutto, Dee Dee infatti studiava prima di andare dal medico i sintomi per ogni malattia che voleva
che fosse diagnosticata a Gypsy . Gypsy dopo aver testimoniato in sua difesa, viene condannata a 10 anni
di carcere e Nicholas viene condannato all’ergastolo.
