BS 2050 Specification for Electrical Resistance of
Conducting and Anti-static Products Made from
Flexible Polymeric Material
4 Definitions
Seller: The person, firm, or company to whom the Purchase Order is issued.
Inspecting Engineer: The representative authorized by the Buyer to carry out the
inspection by this specification.
4. Materials
4.1 Lining
4.1.1 Material
- [Addition] For anti-Static PTFE & PFA liners, PTFE and PFA resin shall
contain a maximum antistatic carbon black filler of 2% that is necessary
to comply with the electrical resistance requirements for the finished
lining.
[Addition] PFA lining shall have a specific gravity between 2.14 to 2.16,
inclusively, per ASTM D3307.
5. Requirements
5.1 Dimensions
5.1.1 Housing
[Addition] The transition from the bore to the flange or collar face at the ends
of each pipe or fitting shall be such as to prevent damage to the lining during
manufacture or use.
- The lining face thickness shall be ±10% of the liner wall thickness.
- For PFA, the liner wall thickness shall be 4 mm for pipe diameters
of 1” through 3” and 4.5 mm for pipe diameters of 4” and above.
5.2.6 [Addition] Each flanged pipe spool shall have a welding neck, slip-on
welding or socket-welding type flange at one end and a welding collar with a

Issue Date: 17 October 2018
Next Planned Update: 16 April 2021 Plastic-lined Ferrous Metal Pipe, Fittings, and Flanges
loose backing flange at the other end, except for those lengths specified in
the Purchase Order to be field flared. In such cases, threaded flanges may be
used when agreed. A stop shall be provided on all spool lengths greater than
500 mm. The stop is to prevent the travel of the loose flange and shall be
located within 150 mm of the back of the collar.
5.2.8 [Addition] Field flaring should only be used where it is impractical either to
specify an actual flanged pipe length in the enquiry / order or to use a site
measured make-up flanged length.
- [Addition] Flanged pipe spools up to 500 mm shall have one vent at mid-
point. Flanged pipe spools above 500 mm and up to 4,000 mm shall
have two vents; one at each end within approximately 100 mm of the
back of the flange or collar. Flanged pipe spools above 4,000 mm shall
additionally have a vent at the mid-point.
- [Addition] The welding boss shall be screwed 1/4 BSP parallel. A PTFE
vented plug screwed 1/4 BSP parallel shall be fitted into the boss.
The thread engagement shall be at least 10 mm. The vent holes in the
pipe, boss and plug shall be 3 mm in diameter.
5.4.4 [Addition] Lining of straight pipe, including site measured make-up pieces,
shall be carried out using a method that ensures an interference fit.
5.4.5 [Addition] Radial defects at the gasket sealing surface of the linings shall be
cause for rejection.
For Anti-Static liners, the electrical resistance between any point on the
inside surface of the lining and the outside surface of the pipe spool shall be
not greater than 107 ohms when tested in accordance with BS 2050, A4.5.
The Inspecting Engineer shall verify that all examinations required by this
Specification have been carried out by the Seller and shall inspect the
pipework to the extent required by this specification.
8. Finish [Modification]
8.2 [Addition] All carbon steel parts are grit blasted before lining to obtain a
near white surface according to NACE 2.

Revision Summary
8 December 2007 New Saudi Aramco Materials System Specification.
19 February 2011 Editorial revision to renumber the document from 12-SAMSS-025 to 01-SAMSS-025.
30 January 2013 Revised the “Next Planned Update.” Reaffirmed the content of the document, and
reissued with editorial revision for clarification.
16 April 2018 Major revision. Overlay with ASTM F1454 in order to align with the newest international
standards. ASTM F1454 is the most comprehensive, internationally-recognized standard
for qualification of hoses which is followed by manufacturers and end users worldwide.
The revision is needed to ensure that quality of thermoplastic lined CS pipes and fittings
are purchased and used by Saudi Aramco are designed, tested, qualified, and
manufactured according current internationally accepted standard.
