Task A4 | Design brief

research.

⚙ How?
Research results summary
● Present the main results of your research (from A2) in a concise list of bullet points. This must be in your own words!
● Illustrate your take-aways with imagery wherever you feel this reduces the amount of writing needed. However, don’t
add images for the sake of adding images. Cite any images that you use.
● Cite (in-text) from the sources that you found your answers from. Use the proper MLA format.

DEFINITIONS By consulting sources, I have found out:

● A fabric is a cloth produced by cotton, nylon, wool, silk and other types of thread.
● Textiles are fibers, thin threads that are interlocked creating different types of patterns.
● Garments are a piece of clothing which has been manufactured and they are in shops for others
to buy.

MANUFACTURING By consulting sources about manufacturing cotton, I have found out:

● It starts with raw cotton, the raw cotton is cleaned to make sure there are no leaves, seeds or
dirt inside the raw cotton.
● The raw cotton gets into a machine which separates fine dust and short fibers.
● The remaining fibers are called carding silver
● 18 to 24 carding silvers are fed together which makes web, the web is called silver lap.
● The carded silver is more combed to remain even finer dust and short fibers!
● After all the cardings are interwoven so that the silver can be longer.
● The silver is still too thick to be wrapped up, so to make the yarn thinner they start twisting the
silver together.
● The silver is too short so to make it even longer they spin the yarn.
● After the string gets longer and longer, they wrap up the string to make yarn.
● There are 4 different ways of joining and assembling pieces of fabric together.
● Fusing is one of the most common and fastest ways of binding fabrics. The fabric is heated up
causing the fibers to melt and stick to each other once the fabric cools down.
● Welding is usually used for garments. Wielding is not exactly like fusing but similar. Wielding
doesn’t heat up the entire cloth it only wields certain areas. You usually use welding for
decorative purposes or sealing uneven areas of the garment
● Adhesives are usually quick and fast, when you don’t want to waste time. Adhesives are used to
combine different clothes together without sewing. Though adhesives aren't as strong as
sewing.

TECHNIQUES AND TOOLS By consulting sources such as, I have found out the following information that I can use for
FOR MAKING designing and creating my product:
● A pattern for textiles is a template for the garments to be traced on and cut.
● There are multiple ways to create patterns. There is the flat pattern method . The flat pattern
method is when every design is made 2D, usually taking the measurements with rulers, curves
and straight edges.
● There's another method called fitting patterns. Fitting patterns are more personally adjusted, so
they take the customers sizes (usually around the chest) they might also add or change up some
of the designs .
● If you are making a sewing pattern for yourself, you should check your own measurements
because every other person is different from yourself.
● Any pattern anyone makes first starts off on a paper. This stage is crucial since it will help you
visualize and create your garment.
● Drawing and creating a pattern will also help you create your garment.
● There's isn't a perfect way of creating a good garment pattern, since it all depends on your
technique.
● There are multiple features to have a good garment pattern.
● Drafting is when you take exact measurements of a specific person's body and then customize
the garment depending on their measurements.
● Draping is when you take a 2D fabric and re-create and make it look 3D. This process is much
faster than flat paper pattern making.
● Flat paper pattern making is when you take a fitted person's measurements and create a garment
with comfort to fit a body/person.

CLIENT INFORMATION By consulting sources such as, I have realized the following considerations should be taken
into account when designing and creating my product:

● This client likes simple but elegant items. The designs I chose in A3 was a simple
black pouch with a small design in the middle.
● I like black and baggy-ish clothes, and some simple jewelry.

PRACTICAL SKILLS By completing the practical skills tasks, I have learned the following skills (list & explain):
● Running stitch
The running stitch is a basic stitch which is very simple to execute. The only issue with this
stitch is it's very hard to space it out evenly and make the stitch straight unless you draw a
line to follow.
● Overstich
The overstitch is also relatively easy, but sometimes you need to space it out properly
because you can mess it up. Another reason the overstitch is a good way to stiching is
because you can fold the cloth and the stitch would look elegant but not too elegant.
● Backstitch
The backstitch is also pretty easy and helpful. The only issue with this stitch is that you can
mess it up fast and it's a little tricky to fix. The backstitch also is very tricky to make in a
straight line unless you mark out a line for yourself to follow.

The skills that will be useful for my project are (list & explain why):
● Running stitch
I think I need the running stitch for sewing up the sides of my small pouch. I will also need
this stitch for the small design I will be putting in the middle of my pouch.
● Overstitch
I think I will use the overstitch for stitching the sides on my small pouch or maybe the
design in the middle of my pouch.
The skills that I still need to practice or want to learn more about are (list & explain):
● Backstitch
I want to get better at backstitching because i tend to mess this stitch up quite frequently, I
also want to get better at this stitch because when i try to execute this i mess up the
spacing while i'm practicing.
● Blanket stitch
I also want to try doing the blanket stitch since i didn’t have enough time to practice/try
doing the stitch. This doesn’t seem like a very easy stitch and I knew the rest of the
stitches so I want to do this stitch in order to challenge myself.

Project commitment
● State what type of product you are going to develop in your project in this unit and outline the direct practical purpose
of this product.
● Outline the bigger picture purpose of the product.
● Describe the client or target audience for whom you will develop the product.

Product and Purpose In this project, I will create a small black pouch with a small design with white threading in
the middle.

The purpose of my product is to have a small simple black pouch to carry my things in. If i
want to take my brush, toothpaste and face wash when I go traveling I could use this
pouch to store my items.

Design Goal My product will address the design problem of textiles being quickly sent to landfills- by
using my product and not buying small cloth pouches for a month or for only one trip. My
product will help me not buy different pouches. Stitching my own product will make me
get a sentimental value to my product making me save it instead of throwing out my
pouch faster.

Intended My product is intended to be used by me. I will use my small pouch for carrying toiletries or
Target audience some things that I could carry in a bag that doesn’t have enough zippers to separate out
items.

Target audience representative I would describe my client having a kid-ish style but a mature style at the same time. They
like a kiddy style but when a different occasion comes she will have a different style.

Their needs and wants for the product are to have space to carry small, bulky and big
products. They also want the pouch to have a little bit of design so that the pouch isn’t one
color. They want the product to have some design to make the pouch look more
interesting.
