Topic/Title of Lesson: Measurement Review

Grade: 5
Length of Lesson: 30-45 Minutes
Date Taught: 12/9/2019
VTFT LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE
In this lesson… students will practice and improve their knowledge on solving
Overview practical problems that involve perimeter, area, and volume

5.8 The student will

● solve practical problems that involve perimeter, area, and volume in

Standards of Learning standard units of measure; and
● differentiate among perimeter, area, and volume and identify whether
the application of the concept of perimeter, area, or volume is
appropriate for a given situation.
Students will be able to…
● Gain a better understanding of perimeter, area, and volume
● Measure in different units
● Be able to find the volume of a three-dimensional figure
Objectives ● Find the perimeter and area of a plane-figure
● Know the formulas
○ Area of a right triangle: ½ base x height
○ The volume of a rectangle solid: length x width x height
I can… gain a better understanding of perimeter, area, and volume by finding
Learning Target objects around the classroom and taking measurements with my group.
● Area of a right triangle: ½ base x height
● The volume of a rectangle solid: length x width x height
Prior Knowledge
● Polygon
Required ● Right angle
● Right Triangle
● Area
○ The surface included within a plane figure, measured by the
number of square units needed to cover the surface
○ A= height x width
● Polygon
○ A closed plane figure composed of at least three line segments
that do not cross
● Right Triangle
Key Vocabulary or ○ Has one right angle
Concepts ● Volume
○ V= length x width x height
● Perimeter
○ P= height (2) + Width (2)
○ The path or distance around any plane figure, it is the measure of
length
● Base
● Height
● Length
● Width
● Right angle
● 3D objects found around the classroom
● Whiteboard
Materials ● Dry erase marker
● Ruler
● ASk what they already know about area, perimeter, and volume
● Ask for the formulas
Introduction/ ○ Write the formulas on the main whiteboard
Hook ○ Also, draw a box and label the height, width, length
● Have one of them demonstrate how to take the measurements

1. Go around the class, each student will pick ONE object to measure
a. It must be 3 Dimensional
b. Can NOT be the same object another student has selected
c. Can Not be off of the teacher’s desk
2. First, each kid will take the measurement of their own object then will
Instructional Activities pass the object clockwise to the partner next to them
3. After everyone has gotten a turn, we will all go over the answers and
explain how we got that

Mrs.Whyman will be retesting them later on to improve their previous test
