Ms. Kenzie Carter, Candidate for the Utah House of Representatives, District 74

St. George, UT 84790

Dear Ms. Kenzie Carter,

We are writing to you as constituents of Utah House District 74, as fellow public servants, and as
the advocates that support you and your campaign. We are writing to urge you to continue your
campaign and your platform for all Utahns including the fight for the passage of ERA, affordable
housing, environmental protection, and affordable health insurance for all. Your success in this
election is important to us and will be felt by Utahns everywhere. There is a lot of work ahead of
us, but we believe in your message and in the future of our communities.

Ms. Carter, we believe it is important that you stay in the race and you continue your work
despite the challenges. We know that as a single, hard-working mother and long term resident of
St. George, you are the best candidate to represent us. However, we know the barriers you may
face. A study from Pew Research shows that those that run for office tend to be white,
well-educated males. The Utah State Legislature is 79% Republican. You are competing for a
seat against two white, male, Republicans, which may feel like an impossible win. However,
your campaign means so much to so many Utahns, despite what the outcome will be. Just the
fact that you are in this race shows other young girls that they can run for office too. Getting your
platform out there shows Utahns that there is an alternative to the old ways of the current
incumbents. Just by putting your name on the ticket shows Utahns that we have options, that we
have the choice to elect a progressive woman to office. As fellow public servants, constituents,
and advocates, we are here to urge you to continue this race and emphasize the importance of
your candidacy. The Friends of Switchpoint homeless shelter is at risk if the opposing candidates
win this election. You are the only candidate for this district that cares about the housing crisis
and homeless population in our community. You are the only candidate that intends to pass the
Equal Rights Amendment. When you continue your candidacy for this race you are sticking up
for those issues and the people affected by them.

As constituents we hope to have the choice to vote for someone that fights for the issues we care
about. Our legislature has been run by the same conservative incumbents for too many years.
Many elections these incumbents went unchallenged. For the first time in a long time, we finally
feel represented by someone that cares about our community. As the only Democrat running for
this office, if you withdraw your candidacy, we will be left with the same Republican incumbent
for another two years.

As fellow public servants, we recognize how difficult this race is and the barriers you face as a
progressive woman in Utah. However, we stand with you and know the significance of gaining
just one seat in the House and how much progress can be made with you in office. We also know
how difficult these elections are and still, how important it is to stay in it through the end. Even if
you do not win this election, you will be able to put your name and your platform out there
which will benefit you in the next election. We strongly encourage you to keep fighting. Finish
this race, if you don’t succeed, run in the next one. Progress doesn’t come easy.

As Advocates we are here to support you in this challenge. And remind you how important it is
just to run for office. We have backed many candidates in many elections, and while only a
handful have won, progress wouldn’t be made without all those that try. If you are feeling like
this is an impossible race, know that many candidates have felt the same way, but because they
continued their fight, they were able to win despite the odds being stacked against them. If you
consider Representaive Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, for example, she is a latina, working-class,
progressive woman, and she had to face every barrier in unseating former Representative Joe
Crowley, a 10-term incumbent. She could’ve easily saw those challenges and withdrew from the
race, but because she stayed in, she has been able to make so much positive change.

Please take this letter as inspiration that we support you and rely on you in this election. With no
other progressive candidate, you are our only hope to create change in our communities. Please
take these factors into consideration before you withdraw your candidacy.

Sincerely,
