This document is intended as a guideline for FortiNAC appliance sizing based on
e s t i m a t i o n o r a c t u a l response from the customer. The combination of total wired
ports and the maximum number of concurrent wireless connections will determine the capacity
required. Depending on the capacity required, an appliance or set of appliances is
suggested.

IMPORTANT: FortiNAC's capacity for processing RADIUS requests is

approximately 60 requests per second. Capacity is affected by the use of
other features in FortiNAC such as the Persistent Agent or MAC
Notification Traps. Any requests that are not immediately processed are
placed in queue. After 5 seconds any unprocessed requests are
discarded.

If you are in an environment where you expect to receive more than 60

RADIUS requests per second you may need additional appliances to
handle the load.

Estimated Port Counts

The table below s h o w e s t i m a t e d port counts that are assigned for each type of
network device. Wireless controllers and autonomous wireless access points don't
have actual ports, however, they are assigned a port count to approximate the
number of connections to be monitored and managed by FortiNAC.

Note: This table is only useful when you cannot get an accurate port count
information from the customer.

Device Type Switch Count Port Count

Wired Switch 1 50
(Less than 50 ports)
Wired Switch 1 Actual number of ports.
(More than 50 ports)
Autonomous Wireless Access Point 1 50
Small Wireless Controller 10 500
Medium Wireless Controller 20 1000
Large Wireless Controller 40 2000

Other Criteria

Criteria Effect
Count the total number of ports that will be managed by FortiNAC. This is a
Total Managed manual count or estimate provided by the customer. It is used on conjunction with
Switch Ports the maximum number of concurrent wireless devices to determine the overall
capacity.

Concurrent Without the actual count number, the sizing will be based its calculation on the
Wireless maximum number of possible wireless connections (see Estimated Port Counts
Connections above).

Appliance Capacities

The table below shows the number of ports the appliance can manage in a variety of
environments.
