1. Introduction
ODIRA energy currently suffering from low API crude and the crude is congealing at surface,
the below data was provided by PT-Odira Energy:
The congealed crude sample was received by DSCB R&D center on 29.11.2017. The objective
of this exercise is to dissolve and disperse the sample and propose a suitable treatment for the
well.

3. Compositional Analysis
Compositional analysis known as SARA was conducted for both deposit samples. SARA
categorizes the organics into 4 components; Saturates, Asphaltenes, Resins & Aromatics.
Modified SARA was performed which segregates Saturates into Macro & Micro-crystalline wax
and differentiates naphthenates fraction from higher organics.

* The manual laboratory practice takes into account the volatile nature of the crude/ volatiles present in deposit
where a portion of this composition gets dissipated through the testing apparatus and processes. The standard
deviation of up to 7% is widely accepted range in laboratory practice of establishing SARA composition.
**Colloidal instability index: is a ratio in between unfavorable organics species over the favorable species in a crude
system. Favorable species will behave as a solvent to disperse and avoid precipitation of unfavorable ones. In
presence of high content of unfavorable species over the favorable, the tendency for the colloidal precipitation of
Asphaltene increases. Colloidal Instability Index (CII), is the ratio of saturates+ asphaltenes over aromatics + resins
fractions. It is reported that if CII is more than 0.9, instability of colloidal Asphaltene is indicated. If it is less than 0.7,
the crudes are generally stable.
3.1. Inference:
SARA compositional analysis indicates that all crude samples are predominantly paraffinic in
nature with high content of macro-crystalline wax (low molecular weight/ low melting point).
Besides paraffins, there is enough amount of asphaltenes and naphthenates to create a sticky
texture and difficult to flow. Even aromatic content is not high enough to make the crude flowable
and that explains the low API and high pour point.
The colloidal instability index (CII) is relatively high (1.12) ,which indicates the instability of
colloidal asphaltenes specially near wellbore where the differential pressure is high enough for

asphaltenes to precipitate and cause nucleation for waxes and other higher organic or inorganics
to create deposit.
To perform the test, 5g of the sample was taken in a beakers. Active 1 and Active 2 (two
components of the thermo-chemical treatment known as SOLIDCLENZTM) were taken in the ratio
of 40 to 60. First active 2 was added to the respective beaker at ambient temperature. Then Active
1 was added and temperature started to rise. The results are shown as below:
Temperature rise to above 108°C with some generated heat lost to the surroundings. However higher temperature
up to 125˚C can be achieved in the well or in insulated pipe line.

Upon transferring the sample to another beaker after cooling, there was no residue of the sample was
left at the bottom of the beaker and sample was dissolve and dispersed.
5. Inference
By using SolidClenzTM the sample was able to dissolve and disperse with no residue at the bottom.
Since sample is high in macro-crystalline wax, along with some asphaltenes and naphthenates,
SolidClenzTM is able to treat the sample. The generated heat can melt the marco-crystalline wax
while the solvent dissolve and disperser other organic components and keep them dispersed
even after cooling. To achieve a desirable results, the treatment should be progressed to 2-3ft
behind the casing. This is to make sure that SolidClenzTM inhibits the congealing of the crude
when there is significant temperature and pressure drop while flowing throw the tubing and keeps
the crude in liquid state and the treatment job sustains for longer time.
