Transkript of The Argumentative Dialogue on Climate Change

Our scenario is based on a conversation between two climate activists who are members of
Fridays for Future Club and investigate about the environment and climate change.

Ece: Hi Su, what is the topic of today’s discussion?

Su: Hi Ece, I want to talk about climate change with you. I wonder your opinions about this
topic. First of all, I want to explain climate change in short. The climate system is a complex
and interactive system that covers atmospheres, land surfaces, snow and ice, oceans and other
water bodies and living things and some changes occur in this system, we are called that
climate change.
Ece: Excuse me for interrupting, may I ask a question?
Su: Sure.
Ece: What is the main reason for climate change? What do you think about it?
Su: There are some reasons for this change, they can be either natural or man-made.  In my
opinion, the biggest reason for climate change is greenhouse gases. Because these gases raise
the temperature in the atmosphere, it affects global warming in a bad way. The main
greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, nitrogen, methane. It has been said that normally, these
gases should exist in the atmosphere sufficiently but the problem is the amount of them is
increasing because of human activities and they keep the heat so this situation causes climate
change.
Ece: I am sorry but I strongly believe that the biggest reason for climate change is fossil fuels.
Humans cause to increase climate change by burning fossil fuels. When these fossil fuels burn
like coal, oil and gas, they produce carbon dioxide and this damages the balance of the world.
Su: Hold on a second, let me finish because I will show some evidence. This dramatic
increase is showed by the world meteorological organization with some diagrams and data.
For example, there is news and it says the immense of greenhouse gases run towards record
because in the atmosphere the rate of carbon dioxide increased to 405,5, parts per million.
Also, the amount of methane gas reached 1859 Per.
Ece: You can be right but if I may suggest another explanation. According to IPCC, the main
reason for the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels. One
of these fossil fuels is coal and we are globally responsible for the consequences of climate
change caused by greenhouse gases generated during the extraction, transport, and
combustion of coal. In addition, the governments also said they would try to limit heating to
1.5 degrees with the 2010 Paris Agreement and to achieve this goal, it is imperative to give up
coal. If we switch to clean energy without using fossil fuels, we become healthier people,
drought and scarcity are reduced as we can prevent rising temperatures, we can create more
environmentally sensitive jobs and, as a result, we can leave a livable world for the future.

Su: Actually it seems as if both of us defend almost the same thing because greenhouse gases
affect climate change but these gases are consist of fossil fuels so you are right the main
reason for climate change can be fossil fuels.
