Que. What is Brownian motion? How did it get this name?
Ans. Brownian motion is the continuous random movement of microscopic solid particles when suspended in
liquid or gas.
The zig-zagging movement of the particles was first observed by the British botanist Robert Brown in 1827
while studying pollen grains in water and is named after him.
Brownian movement occurs because of collisions of the particles with the continually moving molecules of
the liquid or gas. The molecules cannot be seen but their effect on the particles demonstrates their existence.
The phenomenon accounts for the gradual dispersal of smells in the air.

c) Both (a) and (b)
d) Neither (a) nor (b)
Today’s MCQ Answer & Explanation
I. Answer: b)
Explanation: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced the Young Scientist
Programme for the young minds to encourage scientific talent and increase scientific pool in the country.
The initiative, chalked to attract young minds and arouse interest in this niche arena, is conceptualised on the
lines of a similar programme run by American space agency NASA.
ISRO will select over 100 students from across India and give them practical experience of how satellites are
built under the new Young Scientist Programme.
Mostly class 8 students - three each from 29 states and seven Union territories will be selected for the one
month programme during which they will visit ISRO centres, interact with senior scientists, and will have
access to research and development facilities.

• Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number that can be obtained by residents of India, based on their
biometric and demographic data. The data is collected by the Unique Identification Authority of India
(UIDAI), a statutory authority established in January 2009 by the government of India, under the jurisdiction
of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, following the provisions of the Aadhaar (Targeted
Delivery of Financial and other Subsidies, benefits and services) Act, 2016. Aadhaar is the world's largest
biometric ID system.

IV. Answer: b)
Explanation: Hyperspectral imaging, like other spectral imaging, collects and processes information from
across the electromagnetic spectrum. The goal of hyperspectral imaging is to obtain the spectrum for each
pixel in the image of a scene, with the purpose of finding objects, identifying materials, or detecting processes.
Whereas the human eye sees color of visible light in mostly three bands (long wavelengths - perceived as red,
medium wavelengths - perceived as green, and short wavelengths - perceived as blue), spectral imaging
divides the spectrum into many more bands. This technique of dividing images into bands can be extended
beyond the visible. In hyperspectral imaging, the recorded spectra have fine wavelength resolution and cover a
wide range of wavelengths. Hyperspectral imaging measures continuous spectral bands, as opposed to
multispectral imaging which measures spaced spectral bands.
