ECV 3205 STRUCTURAL DESIGN

TUTORIAL 2

1 A simply supported rectangular beam; b = 350mm and d = 550 mm carries a uniformly

distributed load of 475 kN, which includes self-weight. 4H32 tension reinforcement bars and
2H12 compression reinforcement bars were provided to resist the bending moment at the
ultimate limit state. Design the cross-section for shear. fck =30 N/mm2.

2 A simply supported rectangular beam of 3m clear span carries the permanent actions
(inclusive of self-weight) of 25 kN/m and characteristic variable actions of 45 kN/m. Design
the longitudinal reinforcement and shear reinforcement of the beam if fck = 25 N/mm2, fyk =
500 N/mm2.

3 A rectangular section of a beam is subjected to a torsional moment T = 45 kNm. The cross-

section is 550 mm deep and 350mm wide. fck = 30 N/mm2 and fyk = 500 N/mm2. The area of
tension reinforcement is As = 1257 mm2. Design the torsion reinforcement for the beam.

4 Design beam B-1 on the Figure 1 below. Variable action on floor = 4.0 kN/m2; Floor finishes
= 0.5 kN/m2; Slab thickness = 200 mm; Exposure = mild; Unit weight of concrete = 25
kN/m3.; Breadth of beam = 0.6 x overall depth (assume simply supported beam)

5 A simply supported T-beam of 6 m clear span carries an ultimate load of 38 kN/m. The beam
section dimensions, support particulars and tension reinforcement are shown in the Figure 2.
Design the shear reinforcement for the beam. The concrete is grade 25 and shear
reinforcement grade 500. The shear is calculated at the face of the support and at d and 2d
from the face of the support.

6 Explain how shear stresses produce tension cracks in concrete.

7 List the factors that affect the allowable shear in concrete beams and write down the formula
for shear strength of concrete in reinforce concrete beams.

8 What are the types of reinforcements used to resist shear? Describe the action of different
types of shear steel in resisting shear.

9 A reinforced concrete beam of rectangular cross-section is reinforced for moment only and
subjected to an ultimate shear force V of 400 kN. Beam size b = 250 mm, d = 475 mm, and
material strength fck = 30 N/mm2, and fyk = 500 N/mm2. Is the beam satisfactory for shear?

10 Design the shear reinforcement for a beam with b = 300 mm, d = 550 mm, V = 150 kN, fck =
25 N/mm2, and fyk = 500 N/mm2.

11 A T beam and slab system of a structure are made of beams spaced at 3.0 m with clear span
of 7.2 m between brickwalls of 250 mm thick. For the T beam hf = 100 mm, bw = 300 mm, d
= 600 mm, if fck = 35 N/mm2 and fyk = 500 N/mm2, design the shear reinforcement. Assume
4H25 tension reinforcement are continued to support and variable load = 5 kN/m2.
