ASSESSMENT TASK 3: WORKPLACE OBSERVATIONS

Part A: Welcome baby and talk with family member/s

 Greet the parents

Part C: Feed the baby

1. PREPARING BOTTLES FOR FORMULA

Clean Equipment

 Start by wiping down preparation area


 Wash hands with soapy water
 Wash bottles in hot soapy water
 Rinse thoroughly
 Squirt water through hole in teat.

Sterilize equipment
 Cover bottle
 Teat and ring with water and bring to the boil
 Boil in five minutes
 Use microwave, electric or chemical sterilizer following directions
 Store empty sterilized bottles in a sealed container in fridge.
 Be safe—keep children away from boiling water.

2. MAKING UP FORMULA

 Boil fresh tap water


 Cool for around 30 minutes until lukewarm
 It’s best to prepare only one bottle at a time.
 Store sterilized and sealed bottles in the fridge.
 Check instructions on formula tin for how much water to use, put this amount of cooled
boiled water in a sterilized bottle.
 Check instructions on tin for how many scoops of powder to use.

3. GETTING BOTTLE READY FOR FEEDING

 Put lid and teat on bottle


 Tap bottle gently so powder falls down into water
 Swirl and then shake bottle well to mix powder and water
 Shake bottle and squeeze a drop of liquid onto your wrist to test temperature and make
sure milk is flowing from teat.
Part D: Change nappy

PREPARATION
1. A good supply of clean nappies
2. Changing mat or towel
3. Baby wipes or cotton wool and warm water.
4. Nappy cream
5. A nappy disposal unit
6. A spare set of bay clothes just in case.

CHANGING
1. Start by washing your hands

Educators can demonstrate good practice by providing opportunities for sleep and rest according to the
needs of children. The environment should be created conducive to rest, e.g dim lighting , safe and
comfortable bedding .relaxing music, sleep and rest routines should be developed appropriate to the
child’s developmental stage.

1. Put baby to sleep on his back every time until his 1 year old. It’s not safe for a baby to sleep on his
side or tummy.
2. Dress baby in light sleep clothes--- remove any strings or ties from his pajamas and don’t cover his
head.
3. Give baby a pacifier--- pacifiers may help protect against sids.
4. Don’t use home cardiorespiratory monitors as a way to reduce the risk of sids.
