Furthering education

Can you imagine modern education without computer software or the internet? Whether
you’re taking a class online, researching for a paper or sharing work via the cloud, computer
science pros have helped make this possible.

E-learning platforms and applications give students new tools to problem-solve and study,
which has changed the academic world. The ability to take classes online is also a huge benefit
for the world—as it creates access to education for students whose locations, abilities or
finances were a barrier.

6. Expanding communication

“The biggest contribution computer science has made is in the field of communication,” says
Manonit Nand, teacher and system administrator at the Mayoor School. “Computer Science
has made the whole world a very small place—available at your fingertips now.”

Nand mentions social media, video calling and chatting apps—even the applications that allow
you to share documents and photos with someone else long-distance. These capacities have
completely revolutionized the workforce.

7. Predicting and avoiding catastrophes

Computer science is scaling—and scaling very fast for that matter, according to Nand. Applying
computer science to prediction can have a huge impact on the world. “We are predicting
human behavior; we are predicting climates, seasons, ocean currents, etc.” Nand says.

With these tools, we can predict everything from an incoming tsunami to the outbreak pattern
of a pathogen. In that way, some of the most life-saving work that happens in our world relies
on computer scientists. Computer science is even in action when predicting the
trajectory of dangerous comets near our planet.

8. Positively impacting every area of society

Though it’s not always hands-on, almost every aspect of society—from family-owned
businesses needing digital protection to homeless shelters needing a way to streamline their
volunteer base—relies on the innovations spurred by computer science professionals.

“Computer science is a noble profession without which today’s world would come to a
complete halt,” Nand says. When it comes to finding a career that allows you to positively
benefit the world around you, look no further than computer science!
HELP ORGANIZATIONS

Inventory Management Systems

When it comes to managing inventory, organizations need to maintain enough stock to meet

demand without investing in more than they require. Inventory management systems track the

quantity of each item a company maintains, triggering an order of additional stock when the

quantities fall below a pre-determined amount. These systems are best used when the inventory

management system is connected to the point-of-sale (POS) system. The POS system ensures that

each time an item is sold, one of that item is removed from the inventory count, creating a closed

information loop between all departments.

Data Management Systems

The days of large file rooms, rows of filing cabinets and the mailing of documents is fading fast.

Today, most companies store digital versions of documents on servers and storage devices. These

documents become instantly available to everyone in the company, regardless of their geographical

location. Companies are able to store and maintain a tremendous amount of historical data

economically, and employees benefit from immediate access to the documents they need.

Management Information Systems

Storing data is only a benefit if that data can be used effectively. Progressive companies use that

data as part of their strategic planning process as well as the tactical execution of that strategy.

Management Information Systems (MIS) enable companies to track sales data, expenses and

productivity levels. The information can be used to track profitability over time, maximize return on

investment and identify areas of improvement.

Managers can track sales on a daily basis, allowing them to immediately react to lower-than-

expected numbers by boosting employee productivity or reducing the cost of an item.

Customer Relationship Management

Companies are using IT to improve the way they design and manage customer

relationships. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems capture every

interaction a company has with a customer, so that a more enriching experience is

possible. If a customer calls a call center with an issue, the customer support
representative will be able to see what the customer has purchased, view shipping

information, call up the training manual for that item and effectively respond to the

issue.

The entire interaction is stored in the CRM system, ready to be recalled if the customer

calls again. The customer has a better, more focused experience and the company

benefits from improved productivity.

To gain the maximum benefits from your company's information system, you have to exploit all its

capacities. Information systems gain their importance by processing the data from company inputs

to generate information that is useful for managing your operations. To increase the information

system's effectiveness, you can either add more data to make the information more accurate or use

the information in new ways.

Business Communication Systems

Part of management is gathering and distributing information, and information systems can make

this process more efficient by allowing managers to communicate rapidly. Email is quick and

effective, but managers can use information systems even more efficiently by storing documents in

folders that they share with the employees who need the information. This type of communication

lets employees collaborate in a systematic way.

Each employee can communicate additional information by making changes that the system tracks.
The manager collects the inputs and sends the newly revised document to his target audience.

Business Operations Management

How you manage your company's operations depends on the information you have. Information

systems can offer more complete and more recent information, allowing you to operate your

company more efficiently. You can use information systems to gain a cost advantage over

competitors or to differentiate yourself by offering better customer service. Sales data give you

insights about what customers are buying and let you stock or produce items that are selling well.

With guidance from the information system, you can streamline your operations.
Company Decision-Making

The company information system can help you make better decisions by delivering all the

information you need and by modeling the results of your decisions. A decision involves choosing a

course of action from several alternatives and carrying out the corresponding tasks. When you have

accurate, up-to-date information, you can make the choice with confidence.

If more than one choice looks appealing, you can use the information system to run different

scenarios. For each possibility, the system can calculate key indicators such as sales, costs and

profits to help you determine which alternative gives the most beneficial result.

Company Record-Keeping

Your company needs records of its activities for financial and regulatory purposes as well as for

finding the causes of problems and taking corrective action. The information system stores

documents and revision histories, communication records and operational data. The trick to

exploiting this recording capability is organizing the data and using the system to process and

present it as useful historical information. You can use such information to prepare cost estimates

and forecasts and to analyze how your actions affected the key company indicators.

The three parts of the information systems triangle must interact in concert to realize business objectives. The

job of the IS professional is to ensure that a balance is maintained and enhanced for the good of all the actors

and the business as a whole.

Every information system is designed to make someone’s life easier. Unfortunately, that someone is

not always the consumer.

No matter what your career goal is or what industry interests you, your success and the success of the

business rely on your ability to recognize opportunities where information systems can be used to

improve performance. In most lines of work, you will need to store information in and retrieve

information from databases. You will have to create persuasive and professional reports and

presentations to convince others that your ideas make sense.

Information systems as a career is attractive to many individuals because of the traits above.
However, it is also engaging because it is a career in which you get to work on making people’s lives
easier. IS professionals focus on developing systems that businesspersons will use to create efficiency
and increase their performance. IS professionals design systems that help businesspersons make
better decisions (decision support systems) and lead organizations (executive dashboards). Systems
are also created to keep track of materials (supply chain management systems) and customers
(customer relationship management systems). And given the important role of information in
modern organizations, IS professionals record, monitor, and analyze data to learn how the business
can improve (business intelligence systems). IS professionals work to design these systems to be
more usable, more efficient, and more informative.

SOCIETAL ROLE
If there’s one role information systems can do best, it’s making operations more efficient
through computer systems. We find the best ways to design systems to effectively integrate the
people, information technology, and the business processes to accomplish objectives. It is through
this that we improve the quality of life of the people. (20 seconds)
Information is a valuable resource in every industry, and success may depend on how infos
are made accessible for use. IS professionals aid most lines of work with systems to store and retrieve
database information. The success of operating firms springs from decisions made with analysis of
up-to-date data made possible with the effective use of information systems. (20 seconds)
Information systems extends its helping hand to various branches of society: the
government, education, businesses, the medical, and even entertainment. The voting systems,
student records, medical records, and the point of sale systems are all products of IS. Every
information system is designed with the aim to make everyone’s life easier. (20 seconds)
Information systems play a large role in bridging the knowledge gap between institutions and
technology. With knowledge on different system types, IS professionals offer the best
implementations based on the institution need, leading to improved performance and efficiency. The
presence of IS makes others’ lives easier while bringing out the best in the different sectors of society.
