UNIT :4 WOMEN AND POWER

International ‘s Women Day is a global day for women to celebrate

their economic, political and social achievements. It is a good occasion for women
to defend their rights to be equal to men. Thanks to this day, women all over the
world walk in the street to say ‘no to violence,to polygamy and to discrimination’.

However, women still face a lot problems in their life and in society. They

are still victims of violence and sexual harassement at work and of course in the
street.’I got married two years ago,my spouse doesn’t respect me,he hit me and
insult everyday’,said Amal with tears in her eyes.Men still think a woman’s best
place at home to clean clothes and take care of her children,no more.Plus, early
marriage is still common in Morocco, especially in rural areas. If a woman chooses
her husband, the family rarely accepts the idea, which causes a lot problems
between the girl and her family.

Sara works in a small company. After she graduated from university, she

started working to help her family financially. She has a lot of trouble at work.’My
boss always asks me for a love relationship and when I refused he fired me from

Violence against women and girls takes many different forms, including
domestic violence, sexual assault and harassment, child, early and
forced marriage, sex trafficking, so called ‘honor’ crimes and female. It is
rooted in the gender inequality that women face throughout their lives from
childhood through to old age.

It is one of the most widespread violations of human rights and has long-
term devastating effects on the lives of women, their communities and wider
society. It is time to say ‘enough is enough’. We want violence against
women to end.
