The Smart Speaking presentation went well. I went last, after the seniors, so I felt a little

over-prepared. It was much more relaxed than I anticipated. I hit all of the major points and did

not stutter or pause too much. After that, I feel like the classroom presentations won’t be that

bad. I plan on trying to be confident and more relaxed now that I have some experience. I also

need to remember to make eye contact. For the classroom presentations, I will speak more

confidently, be more relaxed, and make more eye contact. I want to present in front of my

engineering class since it is mostly freshmen and it is laid back. I also want to ask my

government teacher because her class is very relaxed and filled with cool people who would

listen to me. I might ask my chemistry teacher because I have a scientific topic. I could also ask

freshman teachers I had last year because freshmen are the main people who we are marketing

to, and they still actually care and pay attention when people talk to them, unlike the other

grades. I have not found an adviser, but I did get a response from one of the people I emailed.

He told me to narrow my topic, so I am looking into whale falls specifically. I do not know if it is a

broad enough topic to research for the whole year, especially since it is a hard topic to research,

but the more I look into it the more it seems I could learn about whale falls. I want to change my
presentation to reflect that, but it will be challenging since I have to present in classrooms soon.

Because I want to narrow my topic so much, I need to do that before I can find a specific expert

to ask to be my advisor, but I already have possible people in mind. Once I settle on my

narrowed topic I will send more letters out.

Develop research question Interviewed my advisor

Develop hypothesis Did a stasis to narrow my topic

Update my advisor Shared the thesis board activity with my table

Journal

I did the interview and a stasis but I don’t know how to narrow my topic. I need to update

my advisor and I am going to throw a couple possible directions out there and see what he

thinks. I could go into how people have affected whale fall ecosystems, how whale fall

ecosystems affect other deep sea ecosystems, differences in different regions of the ocean

(although there is not a lot of data on that), or why we should be concerned with saving whales

and therefore whale fall ecosystems. During the thesis board activity, Ansa suggested that I

focus on something like how whaling has affected whale fall ecosystems. The problem is, in the

places where there is the most research, there was the least hunting. I want to narrow my topic

but I can’t settle on a direction. The stasis helped me to see what I already knew and helped me

identify some broad areas in my research, but it did not really help me decide on a specific
topic. The interview went alright, and now I feel like I kind of know my advisor enough to tell him

where I am in my research without feeling like I’m emailing a complete stranger. I hope to

narrow my topic, come up with a question, and come up with a rough hypothesis in the future.

Find more data collection articles Decided on what to do for data collection

Read the articles and collect data Started finding articles for data collection

Edit my paper with advisor’s comments Got into intern-mentor

Edit my paper with teacher’s comments Had a nice weekend

Journal

I decided on what to do for data collection and started finding articles. The biggest

problem with my data collection is that there is not much accurate data related to threats to

whales today. We also know very little about the deep sea, so threats to the ecosystems once

they are there are hard to study. I will have to go off of articles about threats and estimates

instead of pure numbers. I will have to do that pretty fast since it is due in a week, although I

guess since the analysis is due the 25th I still have time to actually look in-depth into the

articles. I have not had time to look at the edits my advisor gave me last week for my paper. I

will probably hold off on really editing my paper until I am farther along with my data collection.

I don’t really know what to do with my data collection since I did not collect much. The

threats whales currently face are all in-depth topics by themselves, and I can only really sum

them up and say some vague possible solutions. I am trying to think of what would be most

helpful for my project, but I still don’t know exactly what I want to do for that. I could make a

video, but I don’t know who the target audience would be. I was thinking about making a video,

posting it on YouTube, and sending it to whale conservation groups and other groups that want

to help whales and the ocean. Maybe they could use it to encourage people to support laws that

help whales and donate to whale organizations. I haven’t had any motivation lately, so I haven’t

gotten much done. I still haven’t looked at the paper edit form the English teacher because I

hate editing and it seemed like a big task. Now that I’m on somewhat on a schedule, I should be

able to work on that little by little.
