Ground Continuity This test verifies that there is continuity (less than 100 mΩ resistance) between
all the exposed metal surfaces, which have the potential to become energized,
and the ground prong on the mains AC power cord. If the metal surfaces are
anodized or painted, scrape off a small area in an inconspicuous area for the
probe to make contact with the metal.
■ Use a digital multimeter to check all the metal surfaces of the
equipment. Make adjustments for any resistance from the test leads.
■ If the measurements are significantly out of range, check for breaks in
the power cord or in the internal connections within the unit.
GE Marquette Medical Systems recommends that every six months you perform
the maintenance checks and test procedures on the “Preventive Maintenance
Inspection Report”. These maintenance procedures can be performed more often
if indicated. Contact GE Marquette Service for the latest preventive maintenance
procedures for this product.
Assembly Descriptions
Monitor The system uses a 15" or 17" Sony Trinitron GS Series monitor rated IEC-950
universal AC input. These monitors have a standard IEC320 power cord, an
audio input jack to a mono speaker, a stereo headphone output jack, and the usual
15 pin RGB video connector on cable for the following signals.
Keypad The keypad is designed as a bus powered, low speed USB peripheral using a
Cypress MCU. There is protection from ESD on the PCB as well. The keypad is
hot pluggable, and in the CASE 8000 system it relies on a MMS software driver
running the USB ports on the motherboard under NT 4. The keypad contains one
connector, an USB type ‘B’ R/A connector which uses a low speed or high speed
USB A to B cable to the host PC.
Thermal Writer The thermal writer assembly contains a thermal printhead with cue hole sensor, a
motor/encoder assembly to drive the platen roller, a MMS designed PCB to
receive scan line data and motor commands from the PC over USB. The PCB is
based on an Intel high speed USB MCU with an 80251 core. The program is
stored on a FLASH memory chip which can be reprogrammed from the host PC.
There are also supporting DPRAM and FPGA on board besides power
conversion and motor control ICs. The PCB connects to the thermal printhead
and cue sensor through a 26 pin ribbon harness. Power to this PCB is provided
through a 4 pin Molex connector. Motor power lines, encoder sense lines, and
door open sense lines go through an 8 pin Molex connector. A standard type 'B'
R/A USB connector provides the link to the PC using any high speed USB A to B
cable under 5m.
The functioning of this USB writer PCB depends on communication with the
host PC motherboard USB controller which is under the control of a software
driver. A special driver is always needed to talk to this writer PCB. The entire
writer assembly is removable as a unit, including the power supply connections,
so that only a power cord and USB communication cable come out of the
assembly. This allows bench testing of the assembly as a whole. Check operation
in the CASE 8000 system, since full functionality depends on cooperation with
the motherboard USB ports and associated software drivers.
Power System AC power comes into the unit through an IEC-320 inlet module that has an
equipotential ground stud mounted near it. The AC power then goes to a power
distribution PCB that is mounted to the front of the isolation transformer. This
PCB has no active components on it. Instead its function is to route AC power
and isolated AC power to the proper places in the unit. Regular AC power is
routed to the ATX medical grade PC power supply and the thermal writer 75
Watt power supply. Isolated AC power is derived from the isolation transformer,
and routed to the IEC-950 CRT monitor. No switching of AC power is needed
with inputs from 90–265 VAC since all supplies and the isolation transformer are
universal input in the unit.
Standard PC
Components
Motherboard The PC motherboard is a standard Intel ATX BI440ZX with audio support using
one 64MB DIMM for memory, and a minimum 366MHz Intel Celeron socket
370 microprocessor with MMX instruction set and a CPU fan. Besides on PCB
connectors for floppy and IDE drives, the motherboard has an I/O panel
arrangement in one corner (per standard ATX designs) that has off PCB
connectors for PS/2 mouse & keyboard, two USB ports, PC serial port #1 and #2,
PC parallel port #1, audio line out/in, microphone in, and MIDI/joystick port.
PS/2 Keyboard A standard 104 key Windows 95 keyboard with PS/2 interface is connected to
the PC I/O panel PS/2 keyboard connector.
PS/2 Mouse A standard two or three button mouse with PS/2 interface is connected to the PC
I/O panel PS/2 mouse connector.
Video Card A plug-in ATI Rage 128 with 16MB RAM is in the AGP slot on the
motherboard. The monitor cable connects directly into the D shell 15-pin
connector on the panel of this video card.
Network Card A plug-in 3Com Etherlink XL PCI 3C900-Combo network controller card for
10baseT with BNC, RJ-45 and AUI connectors provides the interface and
connectors to whatever network is at the customer site. This card plugs directly
into a PCI slot in the motherboard.
Hard Drive An EIDE hard drive in 3.5" form factor. This drive connects to the motherboard
primary IDE channel as a master through a standard IDE ribbon cable. Power
comes from the ATX power supply.
Floppy Drive A 1.44Mbyte floppy drive in 3.5" form factor. This drive connects to the
motherboard floppy channel through a standard floppy ribbon cable. Power
comes from the ATX power supply.
CD-ROM Drive An EIDE CD-ROM drive in 5.25" form factor. This drive connects to the
motherboard primary IDE channel as a slave through a standard IDE ribbon cable
daisy chained with the hard drive. Power comes from the ATX power supply.
Acquisition/Interface Card Designed and built by GE Marquette, this Motorola DSP based PCB plugs into a
legacy ISA slot on the motherboard and provides an interface to the PC that
allows CAM-14 acquisition and analog/TTL I/O and needed COM ports.
The pin-by-pin descriptions identify the signal names and pin outs for each
connector on the unit.
