Maintenance: Inspection and Cleaning

Inspection and Cleaning

Visual Inspection Perform a visual inspection of all equipment and peripheral devices daily. Turn
off the unit and remove power before making an inspection or cleaning the unit.
■ Check the case and display screen for cracks or other damage.
■ Regularly inspect all cords and cables for fraying or other damage.
■ Verify that all cords and connectors are securely seated.
■ Inspect keys and controls for proper operation.
◆ Toggle keys should not stick in one position.
◆ Knobs should rotate fully in both directions.

Exterior Cleaning Clean the exterior surfaces once per month, and more frequently if needed.
1. Use a clean, soft cloth and a mild dishwashing detergent diluted in
water.
2. Wring the excess water from the cloth. Do not drip water or any liquid
on the equipment, and avoid contact with open vents, plugs, or
connectors.
3. Dry the surfaces with a clean cloth or paper towel.

Interior Cleaning

Disassembly To clean the interior, remove 19 screws from the CPU access door, then remove
the door.

General Check for dust buildup on the surfaces of the interior circuit boards, components,
and assemblies. Use commercially available compressed air to blow away
accumulated dust. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for use.

Thermal Printhead Clean the thermal printhead every three months, or more often with heavy use. A
build-up of thermal paper coating on the printhead can cause light or uneven
printing.

Use a solution containing alcohol on a nonwoven, nonabrasive cloth such as

Techni-Cloth to wipe off the printhead. Do not use paper toweling, as it can
scratch the printhead.

Maintenance: Domestic Electrical Safety Tests

Domestic Electrical Safety Tests

AC Line Voltage Test This test verifies that the domestic wall outlet supplying power to the equipment
is properly wired. For international wiring tests, refer to the internal standards
agencies of that particular country.

120 VAC, 50/60 Hz Use a digital voltmeter to check the voltages of the 120-volt AC wall outlet
(dedicated circuit recommended). If the measurements are significantly out of
range, have a qualified electrician repair the outlet. The voltage measurements
should be as follows:
1. 120 VAC (± 10 VAC) between the line contact and neutral and between
the line contact and ground.
2. Less than 3 VAC between neutral and ground.

NEUTRAL ❶ LINE

GROUND MD1128-011A

240 VAC, 50/60 Hz Use a digital voltmeter, set to measure at least 300 VAC, to check the voltages of
the NEMA 6-20R, AC wall outlet (dedicated circuit recommended). If the
measurements are significantly out of range, have a qualified electrician repair
the outlet. The voltage measurements should be as follows:
1. 120 VAC (± 10 VAC) between either “hot” contact and ground.
2. 210 to 230 VAC between the two “hot” contacts.

Maintenance: Domestic Electrical Safety Tests

Leakage Tests The leakage tests are safety tests to ensure that the equipment poses no electrical
health hazards. Use the table below to determine which tests apply to the unit
under test and the maximum allowable leakage currents. For international
leakage limits, refer to the internal standards agencies of that particular country.

If the unit under test fails the leakage tests, do not allow the customer to use the
equipment. Call Tech Support for assistance. (See the “How to Reach Us” page
in the front of the manual.)

GE Marquette Medical Systems recommends that you perform these tests:

■ Before applying power for the first time
■ Every 6 months as part of routine maintenance
■ Whenever internal assemblies are serviced.

NOTE
The accuracy of the leakage tests depends
on a properly-wired wall outlet. Do not
proceed until you verify the integrity of the
power source.

Maintenance: Domestic Electrical Safety Tests

Ground Continuity This test verifies that there is continuity (less than 100 mΩ resistance) between
all the exposed metal surfaces, which have the potential to become energized,
and the ground prong on the mains AC power cord. If the metal surfaces are
anodized or painted, scrape off a small area in an inconspicuous area for the
probe to make contact with the metal.
■ Use a digital multimeter to check all the metal surfaces of the
equipment. Make adjustments for any resistance from the test leads.
■ If the measurements are significantly out of range, check for breaks in
the power cord or in the internal connections within the unit.

Troubleshooting: Assembly Descriptions

Assembly Descriptions

Monitor The system uses a 15" or 17" Sony Trinitron GS Series monitor rated IEC-950
universal AC input. These monitors have a standard IEC320 power cord, an
audio input jack to a mono speaker, a stereo headphone output jack, and the usual
15 pin RGB video connector on cable for the following signals.

■ Analog RGB: 0.7Vp-p, 75 Ω termination

■ External Sync Signals: Composite 1-5 Vp-p polarity-free TTL
■ Sync on Green: 0.3Vp-p negative
Both monitors display excellent waveform quality at the system setting of 1024 x
768 with 16 bit color depth.

Keypad The keypad is designed as a bus powered, low speed USB peripheral using a
Cypress MCU. There is protection from ESD on the PCB as well. The keypad is
hot pluggable, and in the CASE 8000 system it relies on a MMS software driver
running the USB ports on the motherboard under NT 4. The keypad contains one
connector, an USB type ‘B’ R/A connector which uses a low speed or high speed
USB A to B cable to the host PC.

Thermal Writer The thermal writer assembly contains a thermal printhead with cue hole sensor, a
motor/encoder assembly to drive the platen roller, a MMS designed PCB to
receive scan line data and motor commands from the PC over USB. The PCB is
based on an Intel high speed USB MCU with an 80251 core. The program is
stored on a FLASH memory chip which can be reprogrammed from the host PC.
There are also supporting DPRAM and FPGA on board besides power
conversion and motor control ICs. The PCB connects to the thermal printhead
and cue sensor through a 26 pin ribbon harness. Power to this PCB is provided
through a 4 pin Molex connector. Motor power lines, encoder sense lines, and
door open sense lines go through an 8 pin Molex connector. A standard type 'B'
R/A USB connector provides the link to the PC using any high speed USB A to B
cable under 5m.

The functioning of this USB writer PCB depends on communication with the
host PC motherboard USB controller which is under the control of a software
driver. A special driver is always needed to talk to this writer PCB. The entire
writer assembly is removable as a unit, including the power supply connections,
so that only a power cord and USB communication cable come out of the
assembly. This allows bench testing of the assembly as a whole. Check operation
in the CASE 8000 system, since full functionality depends on cooperation with
the motherboard USB ports and associated software drivers.

Troubleshooting: Assembly Descriptions

Power System AC power comes into the unit through an IEC-320 inlet module that has an
equipotential ground stud mounted near it. The AC power then goes to a power
distribution PCB that is mounted to the front of the isolation transformer. This
PCB has no active components on it. Instead its function is to route AC power
and isolated AC power to the proper places in the unit. Regular AC power is
routed to the ATX medical grade PC power supply and the thermal writer 75
Watt power supply. Isolated AC power is derived from the isolation transformer,
and routed to the IEC-950 CRT monitor. No switching of AC power is needed
with inputs from 90–265 VAC since all supplies and the isolation transformer are
universal input in the unit.

Standard PC
Components

Motherboard The PC motherboard is a standard Intel ATX BI440ZX with audio support using
one 64MB DIMM for memory, and a minimum 366MHz Intel Celeron socket
370 microprocessor with MMX instruction set and a CPU fan. Besides on PCB
connectors for floppy and IDE drives, the motherboard has an I/O panel
arrangement in one corner (per standard ATX designs) that has off PCB
connectors for PS/2 mouse & keyboard, two USB ports, PC serial port #1 and #2,
PC parallel port #1, audio line out/in, microphone in, and MIDI/joystick port.

PS/2 Keyboard A standard 104 key Windows 95 keyboard with PS/2 interface is connected to
the PC I/O panel PS/2 keyboard connector.

PS/2 Mouse A standard two or three button mouse with PS/2 interface is connected to the PC
I/O panel PS/2 mouse connector.

Video Card A plug-in ATI Rage 128 with 16MB RAM is in the AGP slot on the
motherboard. The monitor cable connects directly into the D shell 15-pin
connector on the panel of this video card.

Network Card A plug-in 3Com Etherlink XL PCI 3C900-Combo network controller card for
10baseT with BNC, RJ-45 and AUI connectors provides the interface and
connectors to whatever network is at the customer site. This card plugs directly
into a PCI slot in the motherboard.

Hard Drive An EIDE hard drive in 3.5" form factor. This drive connects to the motherboard
primary IDE channel as a master through a standard IDE ribbon cable. Power
comes from the ATX power supply.

Floppy Drive A 1.44Mbyte floppy drive in 3.5" form factor. This drive connects to the
motherboard floppy channel through a standard floppy ribbon cable. Power
comes from the ATX power supply.

CD-ROM Drive An EIDE CD-ROM drive in 5.25" form factor. This drive connects to the
motherboard primary IDE channel as a slave through a standard IDE ribbon cable
daisy chained with the hard drive. Power comes from the ATX power supply.

Acquisition/Interface Card Designed and built by GE Marquette, this Motorola DSP based PCB plugs into a
legacy ISA slot on the motherboard and provides an interface to the PC that
allows CAM-14 acquisition and analog/TTL I/O and needed COM ports.
