1. (a) Discuss various welded joints used in welded connection? 5 Marks

3. A concrete beam of rectangular cross section of size 120 mm (width) and 200 mm (depth) is pre-stressed by a
straight tendon to an effective force of 150 kN at an eccentricity of 20 min (below the centroid axis in the depth
direction). The stresses at the top and bottom fibers of the section are 10 marks

4. A pre-tensional concrete member of sec. 200 mm and 250 mm contains tendons of area 500 mm2 at the center of
gravity of the section. The pre-stress in tendons is 1000 MPa. Assuming modular ratio as 10, the stress (MPa) in
concrete is 10Marks

5. Explain Hoyer system of pre-stressing. 10 marks

6. Two flats (Fe 410 grade steel), each 300mm x 16 mm are to be joined using 20mm diameter bolts of grade 4.6 to
form a lap connection. The connection is supposed to transfer a service load of 375 kN. Calculate number of bolts
required for connection with minimum pitch and end distance for bolts. Assume thread of the bolt doesn't intercept
the shear plane. 10 marks

Section 2: Attempt any 8 questions.


1. (a) Find the M.R. of a singly reinforced concrete beam of 200 mm width and 400 mm effective depth, reinforced
with 4 bars of 16 mm dia. of Fe 415 steel. Take M 20 concrete. Use I.S. Code method. Redesign the beam if necessary.

(b) Design a balanced singly reinforced concrete beam section for an applied moment of 60 kN-m. The width of the
beam is limited to 175 mm. Use M 20 concrete and Fe 415 steel bars.

2. A beam 230 X 650 mm effective, carries a factored moment of m 195 kN-m. Find area of steel required on tension
side, if concrete M15 and 16. An RC beam is constructed with M15 grade concrete and mild steel. The size of the beam
is 250× 450 mm effective. If it is subjected to a factored moment of 50 kN-m, find the area of steel required.
(or)
Design a lintel with 750 mm wide sun shade monolithically constructed with it over an opening of 2.5 m wide door in
a wall of 230 mm thickness. The height of door is 2.5 m and that of roof is 4.0 m. Consider that the sun shade is
subjected to a superimposed load of 2.5 kN/m2and density of masonry is 20 kN/m3. Consider concrete of grade M20
and steel of grade M20 and steel of grade Fe 415.

3. A beam 350 x 1000 mm effective is reinforced on tension side with 4445 mm 2 of steel. On the compression side
2665 mm2 of steel is placed -50 mm below the top edge. If concrete grade M 15 and steel grade Fe 415 are used, find
the moment of resistance of the beam.

4. A rectangular beam 300 mm wide and 600 mm effective depth is reinforced with a tensile reinforcement of 9000
mm2 and compressive reinforcement of 3000 mm2. The compressive reinforcement has an effective cover of 50 mm.
determine its ultimate moment of resistance. Use M 15 grade concrete and Fe 250 grade steel.

5. Analyze the T- beam section of 250mm width of web, 1200 mm width of flange, 100 mm thickness of flange and
450 mm effective depth to determine the ultimate movement of resistance for three cases of tension reinforcements
(i) 4 × 20 mm ∅
(ii) 4 × 25 mm ∅
(iii) 6 × 25 mm ∅. Consider the concrete of grade M20 and steel of grade Fe 415.

6. A rectangular beam section of 250 mm width and 450 mm effective depth is reinforced with 6 bar and 18 mm 𝜙 out
of which 3 bars have been bent at 45° at a section. Determine the shear resistance of the bent up bars and additional
shear reinforcement required if it is subjected to ultimate shear force of 250 kN. Consider concrete of grade M20 and
steel of grade Fe 415.

7. Design a one way slab, with a clear span of 5.0 m, simply supported on 230 mm thick masonry walls, and subjected
to a live load of 3 kN/m2 and a surface finish load of 1 kN/m2, using Fe 415 steel. Assume that the slab is subjected to
(a) mild exposure and (b) very severe exposure, and compare the results.
(or)
A short R.C. column has a diameter of 450 mm, and is reinforced with 8 bars of 16 mm dia. placed with a clear cover
of 40 mm. Determine load capacity of the column if the transverse reinforcement consists of (a) 8 mm dia. mild steel
ties @ 250 mm c/c (b) 8 mm spirals of Fe 415 steel, arranged at a pitch of 50 mm. Use M 20 concrete and Fe 415 steel
for longitudinal bars.

8. Design a reinforced concrete footing for a column of section 400 mm × 400 mm column which is subjected to a load
of 1000 kN and biaxial moments of 200 kN. m. and 300 kN-m at service state. Consider weight of soil = 20 KN/m3, angle
of repose = 30°, allowable bearing capacity of soil = 175 kN/m2, concrete of grade M20 and steel of grade Fe 415.

Design footings for 300 mm thick masonry and concrete walls which supports load of 200 kN/m and moment of 20 kN
. m/m at service state. Consider weight of soil = 20 KN/m 3, angle of repose = 30°, allowable bearing capacity of soil =
150 kN/m2, concrete of grade M20 and steel of grade Fe 415.

9. (a) A member of a truss consists of two angles ISA 100 x 100 x 6 placed back to back. It carries an ultimate load of
150 kN and is connected to a gusset plate 8mm thick placed in between two connected legs. Determine the number
of M16 bolts of grade 4.6 required for this joint. Assume Fe 410 grade of steel. (Assume minimum end distance e=30
mm and minimum pitch p= 40mm & Thread intercept shear plane)

(b) A single bolted double cover butt joint is used to connect a plate of 16mm thick with cover plates of 12mm thick
using M 16 bolts of grade 4.6 of ultimate tensile stress of bolt is 400 MPa (yield strength=240 Mpa) and partial safety
factor for field bolting is 𝛾mb = 1.25. Find the design bolt value or design strength of bolt (use a factor kb=0.50 and
shank of the bolt intercept the shear plane).

10.(a) Compute the design tension capacity based on gross section yielding of an angle section ISA 90mm x 90mm x
8mm thick connected with gusset plate. The cross sectional area of angle section is 1379 mm 2 and Moment of inertia
is Ixx=Iyy=104.28 x104 mm4 and grade of steel is Fe410 (E250).

(b) Determine design axial load on column section ISMB 350 given that the height of column is 3.0m and that it is pin-
ended. Assume fy=250 Mpa, fu = 410 MPa and E=2 x 105 MPa (properties of ISMB 350 are A=6670 mm2, tf=14.2 mm, tw
= 8.1 mm, b=140mm, h=350mm, rzz =143 mm & ryy = 28.4 mm)

(c) A built up column of 6m length consists of ISA 100mmx100mmx10mm are adequately laced placed with corners
coincident with the corner of square 400mm side. The column is hinged at base and continuous at top. Compute the
design axial compressive load that the continuous column can carry? (Properties A-1903mm2, Izz = Ixx=177x104 mm4,
Cyy = Czz =28.4 mm & ryy = rzz =30.5 mm)
