Profile Essay

Have you ever wondered what is like to be a Psychology professor or just wonder what

Psychology is about? Thomas E. Billimek is the professor of Psychology and chair department at

San Antonio College. Billimek is the person that enjoys what he does as a down to earth person

he surely enjoys life. When professor Billimek was in high school he shared that his life just

happened to fall in place of course as high school student there is always struggles but ended up

achieving those goals. His father was a social worker he said, “I could have said well I guess

that’s going to be my life.” As we grow up, we tend to always think we going to be doing what

our parents do, but without thinking life just happened to fall into place the way you want it with

opportunities to success. If life gives you lemons than make a lemonade!

As an undergraduate professor Billimek shared that most of the students go to college

straight out of high school, single, and that having a job was the life of an undergraduate student.

Professor Billimek worked part time and borrowed money, so he could pay for college himself

and never taking the focus out of college. He as all of other students he had a vision to major in

something you believe you want, but whenever you take a class you never saw yourself taking it

ended up loving it and somehow you change the course of your major. He wanted to major on

Journalism which is a great major to choose then he took his first Psychology course and had

been in Psychology ever since. Psychology is a very broad field that it covers just about

everything you could combine it with almost every subject professor Billimek shared, “If you

like the natural Sciences we are now getting back to an area called neuroscience which is heavy

biology some chemistry, if you want to go to the other end you can look at psychology as a

helping profession so either counseling or clinical psychology, and if you like the business world

we have industrial organizational psychology, and my doctorate is in organizational psychology

and those are just a couple of extremes and everything in between as well.” His doctorate is in

organizational psychology so as chair department here at San Antonio College he mostly does

administrative work and he likes to keep contact in the classroom that is why he teaches a night

class. Just as professor Billimek, his son got his doctorate in Health Psychology now in the

faculty at the medical school at University of California Irvine and is something he is very proud.

People get in psychology because they want to understand themselves or others. A

psychologist can engage in social behavior like psychologists’ study cognitive, emotional and

social processes, and behaviors in people. Psychologist is indicated as an occupation that has

nothing to do with human nature and is also indicated that psychologists are scientists not

healers. Some psychologists work alone doing independent research or consulting patients, and

some work at healthcare’s, facilities or hospitals. Psychology become vital to our schools,

industries, clinics, and military. Psychologist conduct scientific studies, observe and survey

individuals, identify and diagnose disorders, research and identify patterns, test patterns, and the

list goes on. “I like studying leadership, I like studying motivation with organizations,

organizational structure, what works better in one area than another.” First of all learning about

Psychology is something fascinating, Psychology is so broad includes everything and people get

interested in learning, interested in finding out things that we don't know, and the curiosity is

important it gives you the commitment to wanting to study more about the traits or how the

people behave.

In life there are opportunities that you can’t take like maybe trying to expand your

education , but you can take that opportunity because you have a family and it would be selfish

of you to not bring income to your house, and the opportunity just goes away from your hands.

What is required to be a psychologist typically they need doctoral degree or a master’s degree

will be fine for school and industrial positions. To be successful in this career you need to know

the expectations of the field, pursue bachelor’s degree, secure a doctorate, stay on your

education, and keep the counseling relationship strong. Education is a commitment to have a

certain amount of intelligence to get through but a lot of it is just stubbornness and set the mind

that no matter what associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate’ degree you going to get there.

At the doctoral level by the time you’re finished you now have become a colleague of your

professors. “The worst thing would be that I wanted something so badly that I was afraid to try to

get it and I would never have to look back and say if only I had. I'd rather say I tried, and it didn't

work.” There are people that don’t know that there’s a lot of help and never ask for it, something

they ended up regretting. To look at it realistically it's always good to have where do you want to

be professionally on 10 years or what are you going to do for the rest of your life.

The purpose of me writing this essay is to show people what psychology is about because

there’s people that have such a misinterpretation of the job of a psychologist, and that people just

choose this career path because at the end is their only option. I hope to communicate that getting

a career in the Psychology range is fun because psychology is something you can combined with

another career like business, there’s clinical psychology, social psychology, something in

research, organizational psychology, and the list goes on. I feel like psychology is fun and

amazing because you get to make a positive impact in people’s lives. My readers can be my

professor, my classmates and the person I interview. Hopefully this essay gets a positive effect

on my readers and to get the curiosity to learn more about psychology.

Well I think mt process for this essay was pretty much easy because Psychology is

something that I pretty much know about and I remember Professor Billimek because he helped

me out when I first arrived at SAC with the process of my admission and what classes where

better for me and remember also he left a good impression on me because of his fun personality

and I said to myself I got to visit that person again so that’s why I chose him for this essay. He

was excited to see me again and to know that I was going to interview him, and he told me “You

have to show me later what you wrote about me” and we just laugh.
