Objectives:

The main objective of the study of the mechanics of materials is to provide the engineer with the
means of analyzing and designing various mechanics and load bearing structures. After completing
this course, a student should be able to:

1. Solve axially loaded members for stresses and deflections in statically determinate or
indeterminate cases.
2. Solve torsionally loaded shafts for stresses and deflections in statically determinate or
indeterminate cases.
3. Solve beams under bending for stresses.
4. Solve transversely loaded beams for internal shear forces, bending moments and deflection.
5. Apply singularity functions to beam problems.
6. Solve for stresses in beams with combined axial and transverse loads.
7. Know the basics of mechanical design of process vessels that they use in the processing industry.
8. Use some of the available computer packages which solve strength of materials problems.

Topics:

1 Tension, Compression, and Shear. 3 hr

2 Axially Loaded Members and Compound Bars. 4 hr

Class Grading:

%
Midterm Examination 30 Sat. 7/4/2007
Quizzes and Contribution 20 Will be announced
Final Examination 50 To be arranged

There will be two parts in the mid and final examinations, the first part is a close every thing
question while the other part will be open allowed sheets only in addition to some tables of
properties.

Homework/Quizzes:

Students are advised to read the sections of the text before they are covered in class, come prepared
to learn and discuss. Suggested problems will be assigned after each chapter, each student should
work on a problem's solution before collaborating with others. Only after you have made an honest
effort should you discuss work with other students or your instructor. There will be no submission
for homework but a quiz will be given after each chapter. Missed quizzes cannot be made up.

Attendance Policy:

It is expected that students will attend every lecture/discussion class. Students are responsible for
the material covered in class, even if they are absent. Excessive unexcused absences may result in a
lower grade, or even course failure.

Makeup Policy:

Exams will be made up only in the case of an excused emergency. Normally make up exams are
much more difficult compared to the on time exams.

 Students are strongly encouraged to be active in class. Feel free to ask questions if you do not
understand something express your opinion and say what is on your mind, learn the material in
class. I am always open to helpful comments that will improve the course content, also if you are
having a problem with the course, see me as soon as possible as that it can be resolved quickly.
You can drop me an e-mail whenever you want and say whatever regarding the course both in
English or Arabic.
