Formative Assessment #5

Advantages, Disadvantages, and Developments of Using Tagalog as Medium of Instruction

Disadvantages

 Although most of the students who are studying here in

Manila speak Tagalog, some of them are from provinces
who do not know the language well. Also, there are a lot
of exchange students who are not at all familiar with the
language.
 It would be difficult to compete internationally because
there are fields that are based on international standards
like Accountancy and Internal Auditing which uses
English in setting regulatory standards.
 Technical subject like math and science would be even
harder to understand.
 Pursuant of such may result to regional and academic
dispute because other dialects would want to use their
language in their locality as well, different translation
could also affect the students’ understanding because
some words do not have exact translations.
Advantages

 Children who cannot understand or do not have access to

English resources still has a chance to be educated
through electronic writings written in Tagalog.
 Some subjects would be easier to understand which
could result in academic excellence.
 In relation to the previous bullet, since comprehension is
improved, teaching others like their siblings and other
classmates would be easier which doesn’t only result to
individual excellence, but could also be the reason for
national excellence since more children are educated or
literate.
 Students could easily express themselves in doing
activities or asking question regarding their lecture.
 People would appreciate their language more.
Developments

 The Department of Education has implemented a new

subject in elementary education namely “Mother
Tongue” which focuses on helping the children
understand and properly use their first language.
 Students are more appreciative of their language now
which was shown during the time when CHEd was
planning to remove the Filipino subject in college
schools which was objected by the students themselves.
 People are now more observant and strict in constructing
Tagalog sentences and using Tagalog words. They do
not hesitate to correct those who use a word or phrase
incorrectly in attempt to straighten common spelling
mistakes.
 The old culture that glorifies fluent English speakers
more than fluent Tagalog speakers is not deteriorating
with that realization that before studying about other
languages, we should first master and patronize our own.
