A REVIEW ON THE ARTICLE “WHY YOU SHOULD INVEST IN

EDUCATION?”
BY ELODIE TURPIN

The article “Why You Should Invest in Education?” by Elodie Turpin draws
attention to the significance of education to each and every individual. It also presented
the hindrance in attaining education and how it can be achieved by to those who have
less in life. It focuses on the current state of education in the Philippines. The author
supplied for ways available for millions of children and youth despite being part of
millions experiencing poverty. Poverty is a big factor for about 9% or 3.6 million of the
estimated 39.2 million Filipinos aged 6 to 24 years old who were out-of-school children
and youth (OSCY) (Philippine Statistics Authority, 2018). As to Education Data of 2016,
it shows that about half of Filipino students are struggling to finish on time. Increase in
elementary and high school dropouts since 2012 has also been recorded (Porcalla,
2017).

To eradicate the effect of poverty to education, sponsorships have been made

available through the support of governmental and non-governmental agencies,
foundations, corporate donors and private well-wishers. This is the solution to a long-
line problem of attaining education caused by extreme poverty. It does not only reduce
financial burden but also gives students more time to focus on their studies. Added are
FPUA’s initiatives for the underprivileged and vulnerable communities in the Philippines.
Rehabilitation sites were built to accommodate more than 1200 beneficiaries. Programs
in Education, Health, Livelihood, and Environment are afforded to the selected
communities. FPUA’s provides scholarships to high school students from the
rehabilitation sites.
Should we really invest in education? Education is one of the keys to a
successful life of a Filipino. Unfortunately, for Filipinos who are underprivileged,
education is far beyond reach. Poverty is a huge hindrance for an individual who is
holding into his dream to be successful in his chosen field. If extreme poverty is the
problem, it is never easy to be well-off in just a blink of an eye. What can these
underprivileged do to attain their great desire?

The author specifically pointed out the remedies that are available for the poor
people of society. Sponsorship became the focal point of his arguments. Indeed, there
are numbers of government and non-governmental groups who are generous to provide
quality education to those who cannot afford. These sponsorship grants are targeting
the poorest of the poor. If the target is qualified, support to finance the education of the
child will be provided. With these, step by step, the recipient is reaching the ladder of
success. Another point provided by the author is the initiatives of FPUA in building
rehabilitation sites which offers programs in Education, Health, Livelihood, and
Environment to selected communities. This has a better framework in providing
education as it focuses and holds the program within the community.

It was once said that education is the greatest wealth that our parents can leave
us in this world. But how can it be possible if they cannot afford to send their children to
school? There are wide-range open opportunities to help survive the challenge of
attaining proper education. There is nothing to do but to grab these opportunities.
Success is never an impossible dream for those who have courage and determination
to fulfil it. We should really invest in education because it is the way for us to have a
successful and meaningful life. It is true. Education can change lives.
