THE PERSON AND WORK

OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Before Jesus ascended to the Father, He commanded His disciples to wait for the arrival
of the Holy Spirit who would empower them for the ministry to which He had called
them. The Holy Spirit is the energizing force behind the spread of the Gospel and the
fulfillment of God’s plan for the future. He is the one we as believers must rely upon to
accomplish God’s work today.

Yet over the centuries the person and work of the Holy Spirit have often been
misunderstood. It is very important for us to understand who He is and how He is
working in the church today.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

He is a Person.

• He is addressed as a Person. John 14:16)

• He has intellect, will and emotions.

Intellect: “He searches all things” - 1 Corinthians 2:10-11; Rom. 8:27

Will: Acts 16:6; Acts 13
Emotions: Ephesians 4:30

• He does personal actions.

He teaches (John 14:16; 26)

He testifies (John 15:26, 27)
He guides (John 16:13)
He convicts (John 16:8)
He gives spiritual life (John 3:6-8; Titus. 3:5)
He intercedes (Romans 8:26)

 He is God. The Holy Spirit is not only personal, but He is the Third Person of the Trinity --
God Himself. Again, there are several proofs from Scripture that demonstrate this truth.

• Ananias and Sapphira lied to God the Holy Spirit. Acts 6:1-6

• Inspiration of the Scriptures II Peter 1:21 ; II Sam. 23:2-3; Mark 12:36; Acts 1:16

• The Holy Spirit does the works of God.

The Holy Spirit is co-creator of the heavens and earth. (Job 26:13; Psalm
104:24-26)
The Holy Spirit raised Jesus from the dead. (Romans 1:4; 8:11)
The Holy Spirit gives life. (John 3:6)

• The Holy Spirit shares the attributes of God (see following chart).
