BIOGRAPHY

In the last eight or so years, Children Of Bodom that darted to international fame with their
debut, 1997’s "Something Wild", has gone from being "this amazing band from Finland" to a
household name in the metalscene. And that, of course, is obvious given the intensity, sheer
quality of their material and the flawless execution.

Formed in 1993 and hailing from the city of Espoo, Finland, this young Finnish group took their
name from one of the biggest murder mysteries in the history of their home town and Finnish
crime: the murders at the Lake Bodom. After starting out as a thrash-metal combo, the
founding members Alexi Laiho (guitars and vocals), Jaska Raatikainen (drums), Henkka Seppälä
(bass) and Alexander Kuoppala (guitars) soon found elements of classic heavy metal creeping
into their music. After taking in keyboardist Janne Wirman to complete their line-up, they honed
their combination of old schoold black metal, classic heavy, and death metal vocals into the
sharpest instrument of its kind and headed out to a studio record a demo tape.

After Spinefarm Records received Children Of Bodom’s demo, it didn’t take long for the
company to figure out what they had in their hands back in late 1996. Soon the band was
signed and ready to knock a few heads off.

The self-titled debut single "Children Of Bodom" went straight to number 1 on the Finnish charts
and sold platinum. The debut full-length album "Something Wild" was released in Finland in
1997. The Bodoms supported Dimmu Borgir at the band's Helsinki show in November and were
hailed as the new kings of Finnish underground metal by the press. Licensing deal with Nuclear
Blast for central Europe was inked quickly and soon after Middle Europe the album was also
released in Japan and Thailand.

Soon Children Of Bodom was flying all over Europe and writing new material that would become
the "Hatebreeder" album, which was released in February 1999. On "Hatebreeder" their music
had found its true shape: the album was faster, heavier and more versatile than "Something
Wild". The single "Downfall" went gold and ruled the Finnish charts.

During the summer 99 Children Of Bodom toured Finland and Europe. In June they did three
sold out gigs in Japan with Dark Tranquillity and Sinergy and recorded the live CD: "Tokyo
Warhearts-Live in Japan". "Tokyo Warhearts" came out as a limited digibook-edition in Europe
in October and all the 20.000 copies of it were almost immediately sold out. The buzz around
the band was reaching new heights.

In 2000 the single "Hate Me!" went #1 at the Finnish charts and sold gold in Finland in just a
couple of weeks. Platinum sales soon followed. While the single was topping the charts, Children
Of Bodom finished their studio sessions at Peter Tägtgren's Abyss Studio, and the third album
"Follow the Reaper" saw the light of day on the 30th of October 2000.

"Follow the Reaper" was a glorious mixture of their debut album's heavy riffing raw sound,
combined with "Hatebreeder" monstrous technical metal acrobatics. The most noticable thing
however was how much the band had improved as a unit and in bringing the personal levels of
musicianship to a new high.

On "Hate Crew Deathroll", which was released in January 2003, not only did the band take their
songwriting into new levels of aggressivity and heaviness but the way the songs were carried
out pummeled everything they -or anyone, for that matter- had done into dust.

On "Hate Crew Deathroll" Alexi Laiho spits out his lyrics with vitriolic hate, the guitars (courtesy
of Alexi and Alexander Kuoppala) shred everything in their wake with razorsharp precision while
the rhythmsection (the demolition duo of Henkka T. Blacksmith & Jaska W. Raatikainen) pounds
away like the world is about to end. As a final coup de gracé come the keyboards of Janne
Warman, making sure the path of destruction is complete with the fervour and precision of a
seasoned executioner on a killing spree.

In the Summer of 2003, Alexander Kuoppala left the band and was replaced by Roope Latvala,
whose stellar playing had already graced countless of Finnish metal records. Being perhaps the
most widely acclaimed metal guitarist in Finland ever, Roope’s flexible playing style and strange
sense of harmony was a strong influence on CoB by the way of his early nineties speed metal
band Stone.

In 2004 the band tested their new line-up on a four-track EP and a separate DVD-EP "Trashed,
Lost & Strungout" that gave a little taster of the future alongside with two great cover songs.
The EP was an introduction to a new-found drive, a rougher edge, still sounding definitely and
unmistakeably very CoB.

After the relase of the successful mini-album, Children of Bodom barricaded themselves into
studio Hästholmen, Helsinki, to record their next full-length album together with producer /
mixer / engineer guru Mikko Karmila. The result was "Are You Dead Yet?", title of which is
merely rhetorical: the fourth studio album from the trailblazing Finnish metal hate crew is killer
stuff throughout.

Children of Bodom have come a long way since their humble beginnings, and today stand tall in
the all time extreme metal hall of fame, commanding the respect and awe of both fans and
colleagues alike. Children of Bodom have been hugely influential, but still, eight years down the
road east and west alike, remain the leaders of the genre. "Are You Dead Yet?" is all the proof
you need.

Children of Bodom is a metal band from Espoo, Finland. There is some contention
regarding the band's genre classification, but in general the band's musical style can
be described as a hybrid of power metal, melodic death metal and melodic black
metal.[4]

The band's earlier releases leaned more towards a power metal style, but recently the
band has focused on a style more closely related to melodic death metal. However,
several key traits have remained consistent throughout the band's history, such as a
focus on rapid tempos and technical guitar and keyboard solos. Other traits, such as
Alexi's vocal approach and Jaska's use of blast beats are also consistent across the
band's discography. The lyrics of Children of Bodom's songs are written in English
and most often are concerned with the subjects of death, personal struggles, the grim
reaper, war and the Lake Bodom murders.

Biography
[edit]

Early years

The band was founded in 1993 by guitarist Alexi "Wildchild" Laiho and drummer
Jaska Raatikainen under the name of IneartheD. Both musicians had known each
other since childhood and had shared an interest in heavy metal, especially death
metal bands, such as Stone, Entombed and Obituary. Bassist Samuli Miettinen
completed the initial line-up of the band. IneartheD recorded its first demo, titled
Implosion of Heaven, during August of the same year.

Samuli was the main composer of the band's lyrics for the two years that he took part
in IneartheD, but his family moved to the United States in late 1995, making it
impossible for him to remain in the band. His last contribution to IneartheD were the
lyrics of the songs from their second demo, Ubiquitous Absence of Remission. In this
demo, keyboards were incorporated into the band's songs for the first time. In order to
achieve this, both Alexi and Jaska played the keyboards separately, and subsequently
mixed the recorded track with the other instruments. Alexi, who had previously only
composed the melodies of the songs, assumed the role of the band's lyricist.

At the time, Jaska played French horn in a local big band, and during a rehearsal he
met Alexander Kuoppala, a trumpet player and also a proficient guitarist. Hence,
shortly after the recording of their second demo, Alexander was invited to join
IneartheD as a rhythm guitarist.
The bassist chosen to replace Samuli was Henkka "Blacksmith" Seppälä, whom Alexi
and Jaska had previously met at school. Apart from playing the bass, Henkka also
often doubles as the band's backing vocalist. Also, the band recruited a musician to
specialize on keyboards, whose name was Jani Pirisjoki. Both musicians joined
IneartheD in early 1996.

With this new line-up, IneartheD proceeded to record their third demo, entitled
Shining. This demo did not impress record labels any more than the previous ones
had, and none took interest in the band. Despite their efforts, their music got little
exposure and managed only to play at local events. As a last resort, the band decided
to record an independent, self-funded album. Considering that none of the musicians
had much money to begin with, it was an audacious move.

and Alexi

Alexi wanted to make use of the keyboards more effectively this time, and Pirisjoki
was not fit for the task anymore; thus, he was fired from the band (albeit not in a
hostile manner) and a friend of Jaska's, a talented pianist called Janne "Warman"
Wirman, assumed the role of keyboard player.

Janne was the component which was previously missing from IneartheD. His
presence allowed the band to assume the style which would later characterise
Children of Bodom. With him, the band successfully recorded their first album in
1997. Their debut, Something Wild, was supposed to be released by a small Belgian
label, but Sami Tenetz (from Thy Serpent) acquired a copy of their album through the
hands of Alexander (both musicians worked for the same company at the time).
Shortly after IneartheD signed this contract, Spinefarm Records' boss immediately
became interested in signing them for a country-wide release. The latter deal was
much more attractive to the band, since the Belgian label was offering them close to
no help, to the point where they would have to distribute and sell the album
themselves.

For the band to be able to sign with Spinefarm Records, a new name was required; the
contract with the Belgian label had already been signed under the name of IneartheD.
The answer to that problem came as the band members looked for good names in their
local phone book. When they stumbled upon Lake Bodom, they realized it was a
name with impact; one which had an interesting story behind it. A long list of possible
names involving the word Bodom was then made, and they settled with Children of
Bodom.

The story of the Lake Bodom murders goes as follows: on the night of June the 4th of
1960, three teenagers were murdered by means of repeated stabbing with a knife
while on a camping trip to the lake. There was a lone survivor named Nils Gustafsson,
who was initially believed to be an innocent witness who happened to be in the wrong
place at the wrong time. However, in early 2005, the Finnish National Bureau of
Investigation reported that Gustafsson was a suspect. He was later arrested and tried.
On October 7, 2005, Gustafsson was found not guilty. Henkka Seppälä commented,
"The further the trial went on, the more it seemed that it's not possible to judge him.
The prosecution side's evidence was too weak. The biggest surprise was the fact that
he was even prosecuted in the first place. Most of the people wouldn't have guessed
that kind of thing to happen in this matter. Now he is free, and innocent as he has
always been (my trust towards our law institution is strong) and nothing has changed
in the mystery of Lake Bodom. So we can go on and we don't have to change our
name, like many people suggested to do if the case would have been solved!" [5]

Something Wild

With the intention of promoting the upcoming release of Something Wild, the band
opened one of the shows from the symphonic black metal band Dimmu Borgir in late
1997. Their success was such that a representative from the Nuclear Blast label
shortly approached them with a contract for a European release, a deal which started
on the subsequent year. [6]

Something Wild was officially released in November of 1997, and for promotional
purposes the band recorded a music video of the song "Deadnight Warrior". The
video was directed by Mika Lindberg and had a slim budget of €1000, but managed to
convey the band's style rather well. It made use of simple scenery, which consisted
essentially of an outdoors location after a snowstorm. There the band played for a
couple of hours at night, with an average temperature of negative fifteen degrees
Celsius .

Children of Bodom's first European tour began in February of 1998. They played
together with bands such as Hypocrisy, Covenant and Agathodaimon, but suffered
from the absence of Janne, who was concentrating on finishing his studies. He was
replaced by pianist Erna Siikavirta for the duration of the tour.
Live concert in Europe

Months later, the band recorded two new songs, entitled "Towards Dead End" and
"Children of Bodom". The latter was included in a compilation by Spinefarm
Records, which after being released remained on the top of Finnish charts for eight
consecutive weeks. In late August, the band played the song "Forevermore" live for
the first time during a show in Russia. This song was later renamed "Downfall".

Their second European tour occurred in September of that same year, but once more
Janne was not able to perform with them. Alexi's then-girlfriend Kimberly Goss (from
Sinergy and formerly of Dimmu Borgir and Therion) assumed the keyboards this
time. By the end of the tour, Kimberly invited Alexi to join Sinergy, which at the time
was still in its early stages.

Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper

The second album, Hatebreeder, was recorded between the end of 1998 and the
beginning of 1999. It was originally entitled Towards Dead End, but while in studio
the members of the band opted for the current title. To create anticipation in Finland,
the '"Downfall" single was released two weeks prior to the album's release. It was
accompanied by a new music video, once more directed by Mika Lindberg.
Hatebreeder ultimately topped the charts in many European countries.

In July of 1999, the success of the "Downfall" single and Hatebreeder allowed
Children of Bodom to schedule three concerts in Japan with Sinergy and veteran band
In Flames. During two of these concerts the live album Tokyo Warhearts was
recorded, and in it the band managed to seamlessly reproduce and at times improve on
their songs, a notable achievement for a band with only two albums recorded
previously. Under their request, no overdubs were used on the recording of the
concert.

For their next release, Children of Bodom decided to make use of Peter Tägtgren's
Abyss studio in Sweden, instead of the Finnish Astia-studio from Anssi Kippo, in
which they had recorded all of their previous releases, including the demos from
IneartheD. The band wrote eight new songs for this album, and while on the studio
decided to include an extra track, which was hastily composed and featured lyrics
improvised by Alexi; that track would eventually receive the name of "Kissing the
Shadows". The band gave the album the name of Follow the Reaper and recording
sessions took place between August and September of 2000; the album saw a
worldwide release in early 2001. A music video for "Everytime I Die" was recorded
by Finnish director Tuukka Temonen shortly after.

Hate Crew Deathroll and Are You Dead Yet?

In February of 2002, Children of Bodom began writing songs for their upcoming
album, entitled Hate Crew Deathroll. Recording ensued during the month of August,
and the album was released January 2003 in Finland. It remained on the top of the
Finnish charts for a total of three weeks and subsequently became the band's first gold
album, even though all of their albums eventually reached this status, with Follow the
Reaper reaching platinum status.

Jaska, Alexi, Henkka and Janne

Children of Bodom's first world tour began in 2003 and lasted until late 2004. The
tour had many sold-out concerts and marked the consolidation of the band in North
America, but was also accompanied by an unexpected announcement: Alexander
decided to quit Children of Bodom for personal reasons right in the middle of the tour
without giving previous warning. Griffin's guitarist Kai Nergaard was invited by
Alexi to replace Alexander, but did not accept the offer. Thus, Alexi's bandmate from
Sinergy, Roope Latvala (founding member of Stone, one of the bands which started
the heavy metal movement in Finland) assumed the guitars as a session player, until a
more permanent solution could be found. This formation was introduced in Moscow
on the 16th of August.

After successfully finishing the world tour with Latvala — who then assumed a
permanent position in the band's line-up — Children of Bodom proceeded to record
and release the EP Trashed, Lost & Strungout and the single "In Your Face", which
contained songs from their upcoming album and a cover of the Britney Spears song
"Oops!... I Did It Again" as a joke. In late 2005, the album Are You Dead Yet? was
released, featuring a style different from what had been presented by the band on its
previous works. Simpler and heavier guitar riffs were incorporated into Children of
Bodom's sound, as well as elements from industrial music. Reactions from fans to the
release were varied; however, the album remains the band's most commercially
successful. It was awarded gold status in Finland and reached first place on the
Finnish charts, 16th in Germany, 16th in Sweden and 17th in Japan. The next planned
release of the band is a DVD-single for the song "In Your Face", which will include
the music video, backstage footage from the band and a live recording of the song
"Sixpounder".

Children of Bodom's new DVD "Chaos Ridden Years Stockholm Knockout Live" is
scheduled for release on October 10, 2006. It will mainly focus on the February 5,
2006 live concert in Stockholm, Sweden, with over 90 minutes of live footage. It will
also contain every official video Children of Bodom has ever made, excluding the
Needled 24/7 promo. Source

Genre controversy
To what specific genre Children of Bodom actually belongs to is highly debated
amongst fans and critics alike. Some debate that the band is part of several musical
genres, including melodic death metal, neo-classical metal, progressive metal,
melodic black metal, power metal, speed metal, and thrash metal. Some sources claim
the band is 'extreme power metal', due to the band's overarching use of power metal
elements throughout their discography, and their use of extreme metal elements
combined with these. Others feel the band has no association with death metal or
black metal, due to the bands lack of integration into the scenes associated with either
genre. Some claim the band as thrash metal, due to some of their influences on early
albums being thrash metal bands, and their first albums sharing some sonic similarity
with thrash metal songs. Others discount all of the above suggestions, claiming the
band as a speed metal band due to the use of high tempos akin to power metal and
thrash metal. Several people also claim Children of Bodom are Blackened Power
metal (Power metal mixed with black metal influences).

Alexi Laiho, the lead guitarist of the band, is reluctant to categorize their music as
anything more specific than metal that is not power metal. [7]

Trivia
 Children of Bodom's symbol is the Grim Reaper — jokingly nicknamed Roy
by the band.
 They often refer to themselves as the "Hate Crew".
 Most of the band's lyrical content is not printed on the album booklets, thus at
times leaving the words up for the listener to interpret.
 Despite popular belief, Children of Bodom has never covered the songs "The
Trooper" by Iron Maiden or "The Final Countdown" by Europe. "The
Trooper" was actually covered by the band Sentenced, and 'The Final
Countdown' has been done by the bands Norther and Dispatched.
 The single Children of Bodom included, in addition to the title track, the songs
"Repent (Whore)" by Cryhavoc and "Iron, Steel, Metal" by Wizard which are
both mistaken to be covers performed by Children of Bodom.
 After the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest, several European tabloids, including
the Daily Mail, The Sun and Expressen, published an old promotional photo of
Children of Bodom, claiming them to be Lordi "unmasked". The confusion
stemmed from Erna Siikavirta being included in the photo; she went on to be
one of the original members of Lordi. [1]

 The quotation "Death? What do you all know about death?" as a preface to
Sixpounder (Hate Crew Deathroll) is taken from the movie Platoon, from the
character of SSgt. Bob Barnes, played by Tom Berenger.
 The quotation "My pain is constant and sharp and I do not hope for a better
world for anyone, in fact I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no

9. Downfall

The night of timeless fire is drawing near

I flee... Throughout the years of throe
Watching through a mirror, as I fall apart
I see a wreck, I'm burning

I see angels burning, falling down in ruins

Looking down I see me, I'm my own enemy

Watching myself decaying, falling from high spirits

I flee... Throughout the ruins of me
Longing for finding my way out
Leaving myself, there's nothing left for me
The ruins are about to crumble down.

The flame is dying by shivery winds of jet black skies

It reflects hatred in my eyes

I see angels burning, falling down in ruins

Looking down I see my ashes scattered around my grave

Angels whispering fire, no longer I'm alive

Settled down I'm done with the trip to my kingdom come

4. Everytime I Die

The faint blaze of the candle of my life,

slowly dying like a fire in a pouring rain.
No sparks of hope inside,
no shooting stars on my sky.
On broken wings, no flying high...

Another night, another demise,

Cadaverous wind blowing cold as ice...
I`ll let the wind blow out the light
cuz its gets more painful every time I die.

Out of strenght to fight.

I cannot take another night.
I cannot take it no more.
Lust of light slips through my fingers
like blood on my arms.
Black candle wax has buried me...

Another night, another demise,

Cadaverous wind blowing cold as ice...
I`ll let the wind blow out the light
cuz its gets more painful every time I die.
Biography
 (by Stephen Thomas Erlewine)

Combining the melodic jangle of post-Smiths indie-guitar pop with the lilting, trance-inducing
sonic textures of late-'80s dream pop and adding a slight Celtic tint, the Cranberries became
one of the more successful groups to emerge from the pre-Brit-pop U.K. indie scene of the
early '90s. Led by vocalist Dolores O'Riordan, whose keening, powerful voice is the most
distinctive element of the group's sound, the group initially made little impact in the United
Kingdom. It wasn't until the lush ballad "Linger" became an American hit in 1993 that the band
also achieved mass success in the U.K. Following the success of "Linger," the Cranberries
quickly became international stars, as both their 1993 debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing
It, So Why Can't We, and its 1994 follow-up, No Need to Argue, sold millions of copies and
produced a string of hit singles. By the time of their third album, 1996's To the Faithful
Departed, the group had added distorted guitars to its sonic palette and attempted to make
more socially significant music, which resulted in a downturn in the band's commercial
fortunes. Originally, the Cranberries were a band called the Cranberry Saw Us. Brothers Noel
and Mike Hogan (guitar and bass, respectively) formed the band in Limerick, Ireland, with
drummer Fergal Lawler in 1990. Following the departure of the group's original singer, Niall,
the trio placed an advertisement for a female singer. Dolores O'Riordan responded to the
advertisement and auditioned by writing lyrics and melodies to some of the band's existing
demos. When she returned with a rough version of "Linger," the group hired her on the spot.
Shortly after she joined, the band recorded a demo tape which they sold in record stores
throughout Ireland. After the original run of 300 copies sold out, the group truncated their
name to the Cranberries and sent another demo tape, which featured early version of both
"Linger" and "Dreams," to record companies throughout the U.K. The tape was made at Xeric
studios, which was run by Pearse Gilmore, who would later become their manager. At the
time the tape was made, all of the members were still in their late teens.

The demo tape earned the attention of both the U.K. press and record industry and there
soon was a bidding war between major British record labels. Eventually, the group signed
with Island Records. The Cranberries headed into the studio with Gilmore as their producer to
record their first single, "Uncertain." The title proved to be prophetic, as the band did indeed
sound ill at ease on the single, leading to poor reviews in the press, in addition to tensions
between the group and Gilmore. Before they were scheduled to record their debut in 1992,
the Cranberries discovered that Gilmore had signed a secret deal with Island to improve his
studios. The tensions within the band became so great they nearly broke up. Instead, the
band severed all relations with Gilmore, hired Geoff Travis of Rough Trade as their new
manager, and hired Stephen Street, who had previously worked with the Smiths, as their new
producer. The Cranberries' debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, was
released in the spring of 1993, followed by a single of "Dreams." Neither the album or the
single gained much attention, nor did a second single, "Linger." In the summer and fall of
1993, the band toured the United States, opening for The The and Suede, respectively;
frequently, the Cranberries were given a friendlier reception than either of the headliners.

The strong live shows led to MTV putting "Linger" into heavy rotation. By the end of the year,
the single was on its way to becoming a crossover hit. Eventually, the single reached number
eight on the U.S. charts, while the album went double platinum. Everybody Else and "Linger"
began to take off in Britain in early 1994; the album eventually peaked at number one during
the summer. O'Riordan married the band's tour manager, Don Burton, in a much-publicized
ceremony in July of 1994. The marriage, as well as the group's videos, emphasized the
singer as the focal point of the band. O'Riordan's position in the group continued to rise with
the fall release of the group's second album, No Need to Argue. Boasting a slightly harder,
more streamlined sound, yet still produced by Stephen Street, the record debuted at number
six on the U.S. charts and eventually outsold its predecessor; within a year it went triple
platinum, spawning the number one modern rock hit "Zombie" and the number 11 "Ode to My
Family." During the tour for No Need to Argue, rumors began to circulate that O'Riordan was
going to leave the band to pursue a solo career, all of which the band vehemently denied.
Nevertheless, the rumors persisted until the band began recording their third album with
producer Bruce Fairbairn, who had previously worked with Aerosmith. The resulting album,
To the Faithful Departed, was a tougher, more rock-oriented album. Upon its spring 1996
release, the album entered the charts at number six, but its first single, "Salvation," failed to
become a hit on par with "Zombie," "Linger," or "Ode to My Family." Consequently, the album
slipped down the charts relatively quickly and only went platinum, which was slightly
disappointing in light of its two predecessors' multi-platinum status. During the fall of 1996, the
group canceled their Australian and European tour, sparking another round of rumors of
whether O'Riordan was about to launch a solo career. In 1999, the group released Bury the
Hatchet
No need to argue

Ode to my family
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo...

Understand the things I say, don't turn away from me,

'Cause I've spent half my life out there, you wouldn't disagree.
Do you see me? Do you see? Do you like me?
Do you like me standing there? Do you notice?
Do you know? Do you see me? Do you see me?
Does anyone care?

Unhappiness where's when I was young,

And we didn't give a damn,
'Cause we were raised,
To see life as fun and take it if we can.
My mother, my mother,
She hold me, she hold me, when I was out there.
My father, my father,
He liked me, oh, he liked me. Does anyone care?

Understand what I've become, it wasn't my desing.

And people ev'rywhere think, something better than I am.
But I miss you, I miss, 'cause I liked it,
'Cause I liked it, when I was out there. Do you know this?
Do you know you did not find me. You did not find.
Does anyone care?

Unhappiness where's when I was young,

And we didn't give a damn,
'Cause we were raised,
To see life as fun and take it if we can.
My mother, my mother,
She hold me, she hold me, when I was out there.
My father, my father,
He liked me, oh, he liked me.
Does anyone care?... X9
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo...

Zombie
Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
And the violence caused such silence,
Who are we mistaken?

But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.

In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...

In your head, in your head,

Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, dou, dou, dou, dou, dou...

Another mother's breakin',

Heart is taking over.
When the vi'lence causes silence,
We must be mistaken.

It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.

In your head, in your head they're still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying...

In your head, in your head,

Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, oh, ya, ya-a...

The Cranberries are an Irish alternative rock band that rose to mainstream popularity
in the 1990s. Though not officially disbanded, they have been on hiatus since 2005.
Combining the melodic jangle of post-Smiths indie-guitar pop with the lilting, trance-
inducing sonic textures of late-'80s dream pop and adding a slight Celtic tint, The
Cranberries became one of the more successful groups to emerge from the pre-Brit-

History
[edit]

Origins
Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?.

Noel and Mike Hogan, two brothers from Limerick, formed the band with drummer
Fergal Lawler in 1990. The band was originally named The Cranberry Saw Us, a pun
on cranberry sauce. The lead singer at that time was a friend of theirs named Niall
Quinn, who had an extravagant taste for composing and song names, such as "My
Grandma drowned in a fountain in Lourdes", "I was always all ways" and "Throw Me
Down A Big Stairs". When he left the band, Dolores O'Riordan, who was a friend of
Niall's girlfriend at the time, auditioned and won the role of lead singer, writing the
lyrics for "Linger." The character of her voice – which can be alternately keening,
powerful, or lilting – is the distinctive element of the band's sound.

Their homemade demo tape did well locally, and the band soon recorded a demo tape
that earned considerable popular and critical acclaim. After a major-label bidding war,
The Cranberries signed with Island Records. After an unsuccessful first single, they
ditched their manager. Their second single, "Linger," and debut album, Everybody
Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, became a huge hit first in the United States,
United Kingdom and later in the world. The single "Dreams" also became a hit,
reaching #14 on the US charts.

[edit]

No Need To Argue
In 1994, O'Riordan married Don Burton, the band's tour manager. Following up a
remarkable debut album can pose quite a problem for a musical artist or group, but the
Cranberries shrugged off any hint of a sophomore slump and really outdid themselves
with this album. It doesn't have quite the appeal and ethereal magic of Everybody Else
Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, but the complexity and maturity of No Need To
Argue is really quite remarkable. Rather than trying to repackage the appeal of their
first effort, the Cranberries greatly extended their musical tendrils into the solid
ground of serious, socially conscious, heart-stirring lyrics. This album doesn't have
the instantaneous listenability of what came before, but that is largely due to the fact
that this album is a much more personal, revealing statement on the part of singer and
songwriter Dolores O'Riordan. We see a richer, somewhat darker side of the
Cranberries in these thirteen songs. Leading the charge is Zombie, a protest about the
violence between Protestant and Catholic extremists in Northern Ireland in the time of
The Troubles. [1] . This was not the type of music expected from this group at the
time, and that makes it an eye-opening triumph in my opinion. Ridiculous Thoughts
contains traces of the same hard-driving presentation of Zombie, but really and truly
this album is one of plaintive, melancholy songs. There is a touching sadness to tracks
such as Ode To My Family, 21, Empty, Daffodil Lament, and Disappointment.
Dreaming My Dreams is a quiet love song O'Riordan wrote and dedicated to her
husband. Yeat's Grave is a somber and respectful tribute to poet W.B. Yeats, while
the title track is funereal in its presentation. Raw emotion does appear in a couple of
songs: the specter of child abuse puts O'Riordan's voice on edge in The Icicle Melts,
while lonely frustration fuels the passion of I Can't Be With You. This album put to
rest any suggestions that the Cranberries' music lacked substance. No Need to Argue
comes across as a deeply personal album that, if anything, is slightly too introspective
and serious. This being the case, it takes several listens before the beauty and
incredible, emotional intensity of this album really comes across completely. If you
only listen to the album a couple of times, you might well dismiss it as a somewhat
disappointing followup to the much more accessible music of the group's first album.
In time, though, the depth and beauty of this album manifests itself, grabbing you
with its incredible intensity. In its own way, No Need to Argue is even more
remarkable than Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? With their debut
album, The Cranberries soared into the sky; with No Need To Argue, they proved
they could fly.

[edit]

Mid-90s

Amidst rumors of O'Riordan's imminent departure, the band released To the Faithful
Departed, which sold well despite poor reviews, though not nearly as well as the
previous album. During the next few years, the band cancelled a large tour and rumors
of a breakup were widespread. They released Bury the Hatchet to mixed reviews in
1999.

Bury the Hatchet.

In 2001, they released Wake Up and Smell the Coffee to rave reviews of "The magic is
back." The album debuted at number 46 in the U.S. charts. The following year, a
greatest-hits compilation entitled Stars - The Best of 1992 - 2002 was released, along
with a DVD of music videos.
[edit]

Time for a break

However, in 2004, The Cranberries announced they were taking some time to pursue
individual careers. Earlier that year, O'Riordan had sung the title track to the movie
The Passion of the Christ, "Ave Maria" and even composed a song for the movie
Evilenko (with Malcolm McDowell). She plans to record a solo album (to be released
in late 2006). Noel Hogan's new project is the Mono Band.

The Cranberries decided to put the next album on hold. After more than a dozen years
of relentless touring and promotion, which had seen them clocking up album sales in
excess of 38 million and playing to hundreds of thousands of fans around the globe,
the band decided it was time for a break.

Cinderella (band)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Cinderella is a glam metal band with some power pop thrown in for good measure.
They were formed in Philadelphia in 1984 by vocalist Tom Keifer and bassist Eric
Brittingham, with drummer Tony Destra and guitarist Michael Smerick, who later
changed his name to Michael Kelly-Smith. Cinderella was discovered by Jon Bon
Jovi in 1985, at the Empire Rock Club in Pennsylvania. In 1985 Shermick and Destra
left Cinderella and joined another Philadelphia-based metal band called Britny Fox.
They were replaced by guitarist Jeff LaBar and drummer Jim Drnec. It was this lineup
that recorded the Night Songs debut album using studio drummer Jody Cortez. Shortly
after its recording, Drnec was replaced by (former London drummer) Fred Coury.
Coury joined in time to be included as a band member on the album's liner notes.
Night Songs was released in August 1986. At one time it sold more than 50,000
copies a week. The album eventually went triple Platinum.
During their tour for the album, they opened for Bon Jovi, who at the time were
touring for their third album Slippery When Wet. Bon Jovi remained an avid supporter
of Cinderella. Later, Cinderella headlined a tour in Japan.

Cinderella's second album was Long Cold Winter in 1988. During its tour Cinderella
joined Ozzy Osbourne, Scorpions, Mötley Crüe, Bon Jovi, and Skid Row in the
Moscow Music Peace Festival on August 12 & August 13, 1989. The Long Cold
Winter tour ended after 254 shows and fourteen months on the road. The shows
featured Keifer being gently lowered to the stage from the air on his grand piano as
artificial snow fell.

They'd released their third album, Heartbreak Station in 1990. The album was heavily
influenced by Keifer's love of the blues which left some fans unhappy. After its tour,
Fred Coury left the band and joined former Ratt vocalist Stephen Pearcy in a band
called Arcade. There were no hard feelings about his departure.

Unfortunately, after the Heartbreak Station tour Tom lost his voice. He underwent
several operations to no avail. To make matters worse, his beloved mother died of
cancer. By 1994, Cinderella had released their fourth album, Still Climbing, which
received little attention. The band broke up in 1995.

Cinderella reunited in 1997 and toured the United States in the following year. They
released two albums, Once Upon a... and Live at the Key Club. They also went to
work recording new songs but were dropped from their new label, Sony. The band
toured again in 2000 and 2002.

Today Eric Brittingham and Jeff LaBar are also working with Brittingham and his
wife's band, Naked Beggars. Fred is working with numerous bands in the studio and
film, and Keifer is working on a solo album. Cinderella headlined the VH1 Classic
Rock Never Stops 2005 summer tour.

In 2005 Mercury Records released the compilation 'Rocked, Wired & Bluesed: The
Greatest Hits' on CD and DVD.

The band is scheduled to appear on Poison's 20th anniversary tour in the summer of
2006.

+++1993+++

Is when it all began when the mighty Lord Ahriman and Blackmoon (David Parland) founded the
war machine we now know as DARK FUNERAL. They were later joined by Draugen and
Themgoroth.

+++1994+++

The legendary, self-titled and self-financed, mini-cd is recorded at Dan Swanö´s Uni-Sound studio
in January. It is released on May 4th to an unsuspecting world. And on that very same day, the
band would have performed their very first gig at Luse Lottes Pub in Oslo NORWAY. After the
recording sessions, Draugen (drums) leaves the band and is replaced by Equimanthorn.

+++1995+++

The band signs to No Fashion Records, which later turns out to be their biggest misstake yet, and
start preparing songs for a full-length album. After a miserable attempt to record The Secrets Of
The Black Arts at Uni-Sound studios (again with Dan Swanö) the band decides to relocate to
Abyss Studio and re-record the entire album. In between the studio sessions a new song was
written and added to the tracklist "When Angels Forever Die". With engineer Peter Tagtgren
(Hypocripsy) on board, the band finally gets the production they were looking for. Shortly after,
DARK FUNERAL plays their first festival gig, Under The Black Sun I in Berlin. A few weeks prior to
this gig Emperor Magus Caligula joins the band as vocalist and eventually becomes a permanent
member. The band also shoots their very first video for the track "The Secrets Of The Black Arts"
which is well received and played on music channels all over the world.

+++1996+++

January 28th the bands first full-length-album "The Secrets Of The Black Arts" is released upon the
masses and the album is soon licensed to Metal Blade (North America) and Mystic Production
(Poland). The line-up troubles which first saw vocalist Themgoroth and drummer Equimanthorn
leave is soon elevated when co-founding member Blackmoon also leaves. Fortunatly they are
more than compensated with the addition of Alzazmon (drums), Typhos (guitars) and Emperor
Magus Caligula (vocals/bass). With the addition of Caligula (who most of you already knew as
Masse Broberg, the original vocalist of Hypocrisy) DARK FUNERAL is brought to a new level of
aggressivity and intensivity. Together with Necromass the band does the Satanic War Tour I
throughout Europe. Also during 1996, the line-up of Emperor Magus Caligula, Lord Ahriman,
Alzazmon and Blackmoon recorded their unholy version of Bathory's "Call From The Grave" and
"Equimanthorn" for the Bathory tribute, In Conspiracy With Satan. (These stunning cover tracks
also appears later re-mastered for the re-titled re-release of the bands legendary debut "In The
Sign…".).

+++1997+++

The second leg of Satanic War Tour follows with Ancient and Bal Sagoth as support. Also, Dark
Funeral plays their very first show in America at the Expo Of The Extreme festival in Chicago. After
totally desecrating the unsuspecting American audience with their blasphemous stage show
complete with impaled pigs heads on upside down crosses matched with the unholy members
drenched in pigs blood and finishing the set off with Emperor Magus Caligula's firebreathing. From
there the band embarks on the "The American Satanic Crusade Tour" with Usurper in support.
Originally the tour was supposed to also feature Acheron and Destroyer 666, but after too many
hassles, both bands had to cancel. In September, the road dogs return to the Abyss studio to
record "Vobiscum Satanas". Ultra-raw and hyper-fast the unholy duo Ahriman/Caligula have
delivered a record that even the last sceptics have to admit that DARK FUNERAL are
spearheading Swedish black metal together with Marduk.
+++1998+++

The Ineffable Kings Of Darkness Tour with Enthroned and Liar Of Golgotha takes place with
Dominion coming into the band as a session bass player. The band also does their second major
festival appearance at the Swedish Hultsfreds festival. After the festival, Thyphos is kicked out and
Dominion, (who originally was a guitarist), is taken on as the bands second guitarist and Caligula
reverts back to doing both vocals and bass. Before the band heads out on the "Bleed For Satan"
tour, with Cannibal Corpse and Infernal Majesty, Alzazmon (drums) leaves and the bands long
time friend Gaahnfaust is being added to the line-up. (He was also in DARK FUNERAL back in
1996 for a short time.)

+++1999+++

DARK FUNERAL return overseas for another mini-tour "Black Plague Across The West" which
finds the band invading, then destroying Mexico for the first time before they head north and lay to
waste to the state of California. Afterwards they also embark on their longest and most successful
European tour "The Satanic Inquisition" together with Dimmu Borgir.

+++2000+++

With engineer Tommy Tägtgren DARK FUNERAL record the EP "Teach The Children To Worship
Satan" at the Abyss studio B (featuring the new song "An Apprentice Of Satan" and cover-versions
from Slayer, Mayhem, Sodom and King Diamond). For the EP, the band also film a live video for
"An Apprentice Of Satan". DARK FUNERAL join Deicide, Immortal and Cannibal Corpse for the No
Mercy festivals. After the departure of Gaahnfaust, Matte Modin (Defleshed) joins the band as a
permanent member and makes his debut at the With Full Force festival. With Matte DARK
FUNERAL becomes even faster and tighter. Wacken Open Air is added to the band's enormous
gig-list; even a chaotic Canadian/American tour is coming to a good end. Dominion and Caligula
work on their logically titled side-project Dominon Caligula while Lord Ahriman, with members of
Acheron, Incantation and The Electric Hellfire Club, form Wolfen Society. Due to popular demand
for the first EP, DARK FUNERAL re-releases the landmark work complete with new a new cover
and never before published photos, giving the fans a true taste of the history of the band.

+++2001+++
In January/February the band again enter Abyss Studio to record their third (and long awaited) full-
length album. The new album "Diabolis Interium." With the help of producer Peter Tägtgren and
studio technician Lars Szöke, DARK FUNERAL created the MASTERPIECE of their recording
career thus far, a record which will surely be considered a mile-stone in the evolution of black
metal in the future. Beside the usual highspeed-songs, DARK FUNERAL shows a new side,
slowing down for “Goddess Of Sodomy.” “An Apprentice Of Satan”, already known from the last
EP, was reworked for "Diabolis Interium." Other highlights of the CD are “Armageddon Finally
Comes” and the brutal opener “The Arrival Of Satan’s Empire” (which most would agree is THE
crown jewel of the Dark Funeral catalogue). "Diabolis Interium" is an absolute MUST for every
serious metal-collection, not only black metal fanatics!

Due to the overwhelming positive response of "Diabolis Interium" from the

public and the press, DARK FUNERAL were able to secure deals that
brought their music across to a much wider audience with licenses in Japan
(Soundholic Co.Ltd), Brazil (Hellion Records), Poland (Mystic Productions),
Romania (Rocris Disc), Bulgaria (Rocris Disc), Thailand (S.Stack Co. Ltd),
Russia (Irond Records Ltd), Taiwan, Hong Kong & China (Magnus Music).
With the exceptional response to the album in Brazil which was released
through Hellion Records, another local label, Somber Records licenses the
band's entire back catalogue.

As soon as "Diabolis Interium" hit the streets, DARK FUNERAL once again
hit the road. First they toured Europe, supported by Tidfall (NO), Anorexia
Nervosa (FR) and Ragnarok (NO). On this tour the band brought in Mikael
Hedlund (Hypocrisy) to play the bass. After this tour Mikael resumed duties
with his main band. DARK FUNERAL recruited Richard Cabeza for the
session bassist slot. The band also toured the US, supporting their long time
friends Cannibal Corpse. With "Diabolis Interium", the Swedish radio station
ROCKET 95.3 FM nominated DARK FUNERAL in the category “Best
Swedish Hardrock Band”. Other bands nominated at the same time and in the
same category were Breach, Entombed and Arise.

+++2002+++
In October 2002 the band made their very first tour in the Far East. The tour included shows in
Japan, Taiwan and Singapore. The band was the very first western extreme metal band to play
Taiwan and Singapore. DARK FUNERAL received a warm welcome by the Asian crowd, who not
only understood their brand of dark and majestic music, but also the essence of the band itself.

November 29th 2002, DARK FUNERALand MNW/No Fashion Records

announced that effective IMMEDIATELY they were no longer contractually
bound to Necropolis Records, who had licensed the bands 2001 masterpiece
"Diabolis Interium" for North America. Official Termination of contract
papers had already been delivered to Necropolis Records, putting an official
end of DARK FUNERAL's tenure with said record label. This was a result of
Necropolis' deliberate breach of contract with the band and label. DARK
FUNERAL has since put this unfortunate incident behind them and begun
moving on with the future.

After the Asian tour, guitarist Dominion felt that he could not give 100% to
DARK FUNERAL and felt it was in everyone’s best interest to resign his
position. He had felt his lack of motivation to dedicate himself to a full-time
touring band was not fair to the band, and also wanted to explore other
musical options. Dominion officially resigned upon their completion of the
Asian tour. Dominion is and will always be regarded as a very good and
close comrade and brother to the band.

+++2003+++
After the Asian tour, the band begin auditioning guitarists to replace the departed Dominion. A new
guitarist was found in the form of Chaq Mol, who has a long history in different local Metal acts. He
is also in the two man Doom/Black Metal project Mordichrist. He made his official debut with the
band at Wacken Open Air 2003.

After a successful gig at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany the band
headed down to South America for a tour through Brazil, Chile and
Columbia. This tour became one of the most successful tours ever
undertaken by the band. During the tour the band recorded a couple of the
shows with plans to release it as a live album! After sifting through the
recorded material with their live sound engineer (Erik Lidbom, Hitfire
Productions), “De Profundis Clamavi Ad Te Domine" was born.

+++2004+++
DARK FUNERAL began the year by officially announcing their split from MNW/No Fashion
Records. Shortly after, the band signed a license deal with Regain Records for their amazing new
live album “De Profundis Clamavi Ad Te Domine”. It was licensed to several other countries. On
May 31st, 2005 it also finds it´s long awaited release in the US through Candlelight USA.

In January of 2004 the band partnered with Goatwhore (US) and Zyklon (NO) in Japan on the
Extreme The Dojo Volume 9. Shortly after the band continue to tour with a spate of Mexican dates.
A few festivals are also being executed, Spanish Piorno Rock (w/ Sepultura, Saxon, Destruction,
Lacuna Coil among others), Finnish Tuska and X-Mass Festivals. The band appears as the
headline act at Germanys Party San, Swedish Nordic Rage and LA´s Gathering Of The Bestial
Legions Festival. The band also hit Italy together with Defleshed for a short, but extremely
successful burst of dates. In December 2004 DARK FUNERAL then resumed touring by first
playing Israel and then hitting Russia and Ukraine for the Black Winter Days Tour, together with
Horned NecroCannibals and Icewind Blast.

+++2005+++
On January 20th 2005, DARK FUNERAL signed a new record deal with Regain Records. The
band concentrates on writing material for a new full-length album yet still manage to perform at the
Metal Mind Festival in Poland before finally joining the No Mercy Tour with Six Feet Under, Nile,
Dying Fetus among others.

On May 23rd the band finally entered Dug Out Studios together with producer Daniel Bergstrand
(Meshuggah, In Flames, Strapping Young Lad, Behemoth a.s.o.) and Örjan Örnkloo (Misery Loves
CO) to begin work on their new, long awaited full-length album. This, which will be Dark Funeral's
4th full-length studio album is also their most eagerly anticipated recording in their now decade-
long career. The band brings in Gustaf Hielm (ex Messhuggha) to play the bass on the record. On
August 18th Dark Funeral's new Masterpiece "Attera Totus Sanctus" was completed! Raw, fierce,
and evil, Attera Totus Sanctus will rightly reclaim the unholy band’s title at the top of black metal’s
premiere elite. The release date is set for October 24th via Regain Records in Europe and
November 29th via Candlelight in the USA. Further on the album will also be released in Japan on
December 21th via Soundholic Ltd and in Brazil on ????? via Hellion Records.

Its not very often a Black Metal band hits the charts, but on November 2nd, 2006 Dark Funerals
new masterpiece "Attera Totus Sanctus" entered the Swedish top 40 as Nr 35 and the Swedish
Heavy Metal chart as Nr 3.

In November Dark Funeral begun working with Dragon Production, which is a division of A.S.S.
Concert & Promotion GmbH. Dragon Production will handle the bands tour bookings.

Dark Funeral is a black metal band from Sweden. The band was formed in 1993 by
guitarists Lord Ahriman and Blackmoon. The lyrical themes of this band are often
satanism, anti-christianity, apocalypse and highly blasphemous themes.

Ahriman claims to have participated in church burnings which occurred in Sweden in

the wake of Black Metal's Second Wave. However he has expressed his view that the
ancient Scandinavian churches under attack by Norwegian black metallers should not
be burned down, as they once were pagan gathering places.

Biography
[edit]

1993

Dark Funeral was founded by Lord Ahriman and Blackmoon (David Parland). They
were later joined by Draugen and Themgoroth.

[edit]

1994

Their self-titled and self-financed, mini-cd was recorded at Dan Swanö´s Uni-Sound
studio in January. It was released on May 4th to an unsuspecting world. And on that
very same day, the band performed their very first gig at Luse Lottes Pub in Oslo,
Norway. After the recording sessions, Draugen (drums) left the band and was
replaced by Equimanthorn.

[edit]

1995
The band signed up to No Fashion Records, which later turned out to be their biggest
mistake yet, and started preparing songs for a full-length album. After a miserable
attempt to record The Secrets Of The Black Arts at Uni-Sound studios (again with

sifting through the recorded material with their live sound engineer (Erik Lidbom,
Hitfire Productions), “De Profundis Clamavi Ad Te Domine" was born.

[edit]

2004

Dark Funeral officially announced their split from MNW/No Fashion Records.
Shortly after, the band signed a license deal with Regain Records for their live album
“De Profundis Clamavi Ad Te Domine”. It was licensed to several other countries. On
May 31st, 2005 it also found it´s long awaited release in the US through Candlelight
USA.

In January of 2004 the band partnered with Goatwhore (US) and Zyklon (NO) in
Japan on the Extreme The Dojo Volume 9. Shortly after the band continue to tour
with a spate of Mexican dates. A few festivals are also being executed, Spanish
Piorno Rock (w/ Sepultura, Saxon, Destruction, Lacuna Coil among others), Finnish
Tuska and X-Mass Festivals. The band appears as the headline act at Germany's Party
San, Swedish Nordic Rage and LA´s Gathering Of The Bestial Legions Festival. The
band also hit Italy together with Defleshed for a short, but extremely successful burst
of dates. In December 2004 Dark Funeral then resumed touring by first playing Israel
and then hitting Russia and Ukraine for the Black Winter Days Tour, together with
Horned NecroCannibals and Icewind Blast.

[edit]

2005

On January 20th 2005, they signed a new record deal with Regain Records. The band
concentrates on writing material for a new full-length album yet still manage to
perform at the Metal Mind Festival in Poland before finally joining the No Mercy
Tour with Six Feet Under, Nile, Dying Fetus among others.

On May 23rd the band entered Dug Out Studios together with producer Daniel
Bergstrand and Örjan Örnkloo to begin work on their new, long awaited full-length
album. The band brought in Gustaf Hielm (ex Meshuggah) to play the bass on the
record. On August 18th Dark Funeral's new Masterpiece "Attera Totus Sanctus" was
completed.

The album was well received by the metal community, despite disappointment in the
decline of Caligula's vocals, possibly due to aging. It entered the Swedish top 40 as Nr
35 and the Swedish Heavy Metal chart as Nr 3. Few Black Metal records have hit the
charts.
In November, Dark Funeral began working with Dragon Production, which is a
division of A.S.S. Concert & Promotion GmbH. Dragon Production were entrusted
with handling tour bookings.

11. Dark Are The Path's To Eternity

In the cold twilight I stand

Watching the rise of the moon
In my deep dreaming eyes
The reflection shines so clear
With the burning eyes of a wolf
The moonscape I behold
I can hear the souls astray
Whisper from the shadows

Oh, beutiful night

Thou art my mistress
Enshrouded in thy mysticism
Forever I will be
Enwrapped in the darkness
I wander across the fields
Of this haunted land in solitude
Enlightened by the moon

I am eternal, a life immoral in darkness

Alone I have wandered in the mysteries eternal

In my dreams
I spread my wings
Oh, the winds are calling
My cursed name
In tranquillity
I fly into eternity
The silence is broken
By my screams

Oh, mysterious night, thou art my silent mistress

Make me once more one with the dark

Like a black raven, I fly across the haunted fields

Immortality
Runs thick through my veins
In endless shadowed time
I've wandered through the night
Ensnared by the moonlight
I howl upon the dark
Raptured by the winds
That whispers in forbidden tongues

I am eternal, a life immortal in darkness

Alone I have wandered in the mysteries eternal

This article is about the rock group. For the song with the same name, see
Deep Purple (song)

Deep Purple is the name of a British group, and is also the name of a song composed
by Peter De Rose, from which the band borrowed its name. They are one of the first
and most famous hard rock bands. They are considered pioneers of heavy metal,
though have never considered themselves a heavy metal band.

Pre-History
The band Episode Six released several singles in the UK during the mid-sixties. It
featured Ian Gillan on vocals, Graham Dimmock on guitar, Roger Glover on bass,
Tony Lander on guitar, Sheila Carter on keyboards, and Harvey Shields on the drums.
Despite extensive touring, they never had their big break.

In 1967, a band called The Flowerpot Men and their Garden was formed, formerly
known as The Ivy League. It was concentrated on a trio of singers. The new name
was clearly derived from the children's show The Flowerpot Men, with the obvious
psychedelic-era puns on flower power and "pot". The band's most popular song was
"Let's Go To San Francisco." Some listeners assumed that the song was a parody of
Scott McKenzie's "If You're Going to San Francisco," but the band has denied this. It
featured Tony Burrows, Neil Landon, Robin Shaw, and Pete Nelson on vocals, Ged
Peck on guitar, Nick Simper on bass, Jon Lord on organ, and Carlo Little on drums.
Jon Lord had formerly played in The Artwoods, Nick Simper had been with
Screaming Lord Sutch's The Savages, where he also played with guitarist Ritchie
Blackmore.

[edit]

The Dawn of Purple

In 1967, former Searchers drummer Chris Curtis contacted London businessman
Tony Edwards in the hope that he would manage a new group he was putting
together. Curtis’ idea was that the members of the group would get on and off a
musical roundabout, and suitably impressed, Edwards agreed to finance the venture
with a couple of business partners, John Coletta and Ron Hire (Hire-Edwards-Coletta
– HEC Enterprises).

Curtis then set about building up the group, to be known as Roundabout. His first
encounter was with Hammond organ player Jon Lord, then he persuaded session
guitarist Ritchie Blackmore to return from Hamburg, Germany, to audition for the
new group. Curtis himself, however, soon dropped out, but HEC Enterprises, as well
as Lord and Blackmore, were keen that the project should continue, so firstly bassist
Nick Simper, then finally vocalist Rod Evans and drummer Ian Paice (both of whom
were from the group The Maze), were recruited. After their first few gigs on a brief
tour of Denmark in the spring of 1968, the band agreed on a new name suggested by
Ritchie – Deep Purple.

In October 1968, the group had tremendous success in the US (but not the UK) with a
cover of Joe South's "Hush," taken from their debut album Shades of Deep Purple,
and they were duly booked to support Cream on their Goodbye tour. However they
were soon kicked off the tour, allegedly because they were upstaging the headlining
act. The band's second album, The Book of Taliesyn, was released in the United States
to coincide with this tour, although it would not be released in their home country
until the following year. 1969 saw the release of their third album, Deep Purple,
which contained a symphony orchestra on some tracks. After these three albums and
extensive touring in the States, Rod Evans and Nick Simper were unceremoniously
sacked, and replaced by vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover both ex-Episode
Six. This would create the quintessential Deep Purple "Mark 2" lineup. Initially, this
version of the band released a single probably influenced by the then-popular stage
musical "Hair", a cover of a Greenaway-Cook tune titled "Hallelujah", which flopped,
and then the Concerto for Group and Orchestra, a three-part movement written by
Lord and performed at the Royal Albert Hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra
conducted by Malcolm Arnold. Together with Five Bridges by The Nice, it was one
of the first collaborations between a rock band and an orchestra, although at the time,
certain members of Purple were less than happy at the group being tagged as "a group
who played with orchestras" when actually what they had in mind was to develop the
band into a much tighter, hard-rocking style.

[edit]

Top of the World

Shortly after the orchestral release, the band began a hectic touring and recording
schedule that was to see little respite for the next three years. Their first studio album,
released in mid-1970, was In Rock and contained concert staples Speed King and
Child in Time. The band also issued the UK Top Ten single Black Night. Blackmore's
and Lord's guitar-keyboard interplay coupled with Ian Gillan's howling vocals and the
solid rhythm section of Glover and Paice, now started to become an instantly
recognizable.[citation  needed] A second album, the slightly more mellow and progressive
Fireball (a favourite of Gillan's but not of Blackmore's), was issued in 1971. The band
also scored another chart hit with Strange Kind Of Woman. Together with Led
Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, Purple were laying the groundwork for what is now
called heavy metal music, although at the time, the phrase was still to be coined.
During 1972, Deep Purple continued to tour and record at a rate that would be rare
thirty years on, releasing Machine Head, an album that was due to be recorded at a
casino in Montreux, using the Rolling Stones' mobile recording truck, but after an
accidental fire during a Frank Zappa gig burned down the casino the album was
actually recorded at the nearby Grand Hotel -- this incident famously inspiring the
song Smoke on the Water. Continuing from where both previous albums left off,
adding more boogie and funk influences, Machine Head has since remained the
band's most classic album, creating a number of career-spanning stage favourites
(Highway Star, Space Truckin', Lazy and Smoke on the Water). This album was
followed a few months later by a live release, Made in Japan mostly recorded at three
Japanese gigs- two in Osaka and one in Tokyo, it is today still one of rock music's
most popular live concert recordings (although at the time it was perhaps seen as less
important, as only two band members turned up to mix it).

The classic Purple Mk 2 line-up continued to work and record into 1973, releasing the
album Who Do We Think We Are (1973), featuring the hit single Woman from Tokyo,
but tensions within the band were more noticeable than ever. The bad feelings
culminated in Ian Gillan quitting the band after another European tour, and Roger
Glover being pushed out with him. Their replacements were an unknown singer from
northern England, David Coverdale, and bassist Glenn Hughes, formerly of Trapeze.
This new line-up continued into 1974 with the heavy blues/rock album Burn, another
highly successful release. Hughes and Coverdale added a funky R&B/soul element to
the band's music, a sound that was even more apparent on the 1974 release
Stormbringer. Blackmore was not happy with the results, and as a result left the band
in 1975 to form his own band Rainbow.

With Blackmore's departure, Deep Purple was left to fill one of the biggest vacancies
in rock music. The gap was filled by American Tommy Bolin who had established
himself with acts such as Zephyr, James Gang and Billy Cobham, with whom Bolin
made his mark on the jazz fusion Spectrum album. On the face of it Bolin was just
what the doctor ordered. The subsequent album, however, 1975's Come Taste the
Band, proved unpopular with die-hard fans and failed to attract any new ones, perhaps
since it was a radical departure from the expected Deep Purple sound. Bolin himself
turned out not to be ready for the daunting job of filling Blackmore's shoes, suffering
hostility from some crowds while turning in erratic performances varying from
scintillating to mundane. Bolin also had a heroin habit, which made matters all the
worse. After a particularly traumatic tour to promote Come Taste the Band, the band
broke up. Bolin later died of a heroin overdose in Miami while on tour supporting Jeff
Beck.

Subsequently, most of the past members of Deep Purple would go on to have

considerable success in a number of other bands, including Rainbow, Whitesnake and
Gillan, while there were a number of promoter-led attempts to get the band to reform,
especially with the revival of the hard rock market in the late 70s/early 80s.

[edit]

The Reunions
In 1980, Rod Evans, along with a group of unknown musicians, toured under the
banner of Deep Purple. As the only original member, and one little known to most
fans, this band was instantly derided by press and fans as a fraud. The lineup
performed concerts in Mexico and the USA before legal action was taken to deny
them the use of the name. In retrospect, however tenuous the connection this band had
to the name "Deep Purple", at least it kept the name alive and in the media, albeit
briefly. More information on this "fake" Deep Purple is available here and here.

However, in April 1984, eight years after the demise of Deep Purple, a full-scale (and
legal) reunion happened. It was announced on BBC radio's The Friday Rock Show
that the "classic" early 70s line-up of Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord, and Paice was
reforming and recording new material. The band signed a deal with Polydor in Europe
and Mercury in North America. The album Perfect Strangers was released in October
1984 and the tour followed, starting in Australia and winding its way across the world
into Europe by the following summer. It was a tremendous success. The UK
homecoming proved mixed as they elected to play just a single festival show at
Knebworth (with main support from The Scorpions). The weather was famously bad
but 80,000 turned up anyway.

The line-up recorded and toured The House of Blue Light in 1987 though to lower
sales, a live album Nobody's Perfect (1988) was culled from several shows on this
tour. While in the UK a new version of "Hush" was released to mark 20 years of the
band. In 1989, Ian Gillan was fired from the band, as his relations with Blackmore
soured. His replacement was former Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner. This line up
recorded just one album, Slaves & Masters (1990), and toured in support of it. Despite
the renewed excellence of the band during this period, many fans were not pleased
with Turner, preferring Gillan.

With the tour done, Turner was forced to go as Lord, Paice, Glover, and the record
company wanted Gillan back in the fold. Blackmore relented and the classic line-up
recorded The Battle Rages On in 1993. During an artistically successful European
tour during the fall of 1993, tensions between Gillan and Blackmore came to a head
yet again. Blackmore walked out in November 1993, never to return and leaving the
band in a fix. Joe Satriani was drafted in, so the live dates (in Japan) in December
could be completed. Satriani stayed on for a European Summer tour in 1994, Satriani
was asked to stay permanently although his record contract commitments prevented
this. The band unanimously chose Dixie Dregs guitarist Steve Morse to become
Blackmore's permanent successor.

[edit]

Revival
Steve Morse’s arrival thoroughly revitalised the band as he is cited one the best and
most accomplished modern guitarists. In 1996 the band released the critically
acclaimed Purpendicular, which brimmed with confidence and new ideas. Deep
Purple enjoyed success throughout the rest of the 1990s, releasing the harder-
sounding Abandon in 1998, and touring with renewed relish, playing a setlist which
was probably more adventurous and eclectic than ever before. In 1999, Jon Lord, with
the help of a fan who was also a musicologist and composer, painstakingly recreated
the Concerto for Group and Orchestra, and it was once again performed at the Royal
Albert Hall in September 1999, this time with the London Symphony Orchestra
conducted by Paul Mann. The concert also featured songs from each member’s solo
careers, as well as a short Deep Purple set, and the occasion was commemorated on
the 2000 album In Concert with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Much of the next few years was spent on the road via constant touring. The group
continued forward until 2002, when venerable founding member Jon Lord (who,
along with Ian Paice, was the only member to be in all incarnations of the band)
announced his amicable retirement from the band to pursue personal projects
(especially orchestral work). Rock keyboard veteran Don Airey
(Rainbow/Whitesnake, etc.), who had helped Purple out when Lord was injured in
2001, joined the band. In 2003, Deep Purple released their first studio album in five
years, the highly praised (but controversially titled) Bananas, and began touring in
support of the album immediately. In October of 2005, the band's 37th year, Purple
released Rapture of the Deep, which, although recorded in just a few weeks, proved to
be the most progressive and adventurous album for many years, and it is being
followed by yet another extensive world tour.

[edit]

Deep Purple and Heavy Metal

Despite their association with the sub-genre, Deep Purple have never been a heavy
metal band, though many later heavy metal bands cite their influence. The group has
frequently changed styles and line-ups over the years, but has always included
virtuoso players in its ranks and placed a high priority on musicianship. Some
incarnations of Deep Purple have brought aspects of jazz and classical influences to a
rock context due to their frequent use of their songs as vehicles for extended and
sophisticated solos.

Today, Deep Purple steadfastly carries on in the studio and around the globe as one of
history's most prolific, longest-lived, and hardest touring rock 'n roll bands.

The various line-ups in the history of Deep Purple are referred to by fans and the band
themselves by "Mark" numbers (abbreviated as Mk I, Mk II, etc.) The "gap" in the
numbering, Mk VI, refers to the series of concerts performed with Joe Satriani on
guitar, when Ritchie Blackmore quit the band halfway through the tour in November
1993. This is the only lineup for which no official recordings have yet been released.

* Deep Purple - discografie

In ciuda
lungul anilor, insa a inclus mereu in randurile sale
cantareti si instrumentisti virtuosi, recunoscuti in
randul artistilor. Deep Purple a avut in componenta
muzicieni ce proveneau din trupele Episode Six, The
Flowerpot Men and their Garden, Roundabout.
Prima componenta a trupei Deep Purple era: Ritchie
Blackmore - chitara, Jon Lord - clape, Rod Evans - voce,
Nick Simper - bass, Ian Paice - tobe.
apreciat, "Shades of Deep Purple, in 1968. In acelasi an,
trupa a mai albumul "The Book Of Taliesyn", un an mai
Aceasta
formula va inregistra albumul "Concerto for Group and
Dupa acesta, insa, Deep Purple a socat lumea
Black Sabbath. In acea perioada, Deep Purple a
Purple In Rock"(1970),"Fireball" (1971), "Machine
mai celebre piese Deep Purple, intitulata "Smoke on
the Water), si albumul live "Made In Japan"(1972).
In aceeasi formula, Deep Purple si-a continuat
activitatea lansand albumul "Who Do We Think We
Are?" (1973), punct in care si Gillan si Glover parasesc
trupa, fiind inlocuiti de solistul David Coverdale si de
Glenn Hughes - bass si voce. Noua Deep
Purple inregistreaza in 1974 albumul "Burn",
cotat ca fiind un succes. Hughes si Coverdale
au constituit elementul de noutate in cadrul
trupei, imprimand sunetului trupei, pana atunci
decembrie 1974 - Stormbringer. Blackmore
este nemultumit de rezultat, iar dupa lansarea
live-ului "Made in Europe" (contine inregistrari
din turneul Stormbringer), membrul fondator
paraseste Deep Purple in 1975.

Bolin, care-si crease imaginea in trupe ca Zephyr,
James Gang si Billy Cobham. Aparent noul membru
era exact "recomandarea medicului". Pt formatie, a
urmat albumul "Come Taste the Band", in 75, calitatea
despartirea
grupului. In perioada urmatoare, fostii membri ai Deep Purple
activitatii, Deep Purple revine in forta. In cadrul emisiunii The
'70. Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord si Paice sustineau deja
concerte si inregistrau un nou album. "Perfect Strangers" este
lansat in octombrie 1984, sub marca Polydor, in Europa, si
Mercury, in America de Nord. Turneul care a urmat a debutat
in Noua Zeelanda si s-a desfasurat pe continentele lumii,
sfarsind in Europa spre finalul verii anului 1985. Succesul a
fost urias.
In Marea Britanie, ei au cantat doar in cadrul unui festival,
sustinuti de trupa The Scorpions, si, desi vremea a fost foarte
rea, concertul s-a tinut in prezenta a peste 80.000 de
spectatori.
A urmat albumul si concertul pentru "The House of Blue
Light", in 1987, iar un an mai tarziu live-ul "Nobody's Perfect"
in 1988, format din inregistrarile concertelor recente din SUA.
O noua versiune a piesei "Hush" este lansata in Marea
In 1989, Ian Gillan paraseste din nou formatia, in urma
trupei Rainbow - Joe Lynn Turner. Aceasta componenta a
inregistrat doar un
album - "Slaves and Masters (1990), urmat de
turneul de promovare. Dupa turneu, Turner
de Gillan in componenta. Blackmore s-a mai
imbunat, iar componenta clasica a inregistrat
albumul The Battle Rages On in 1993. In
timpul turneului de promovare in 1994,
tensiunea dintre Gillan si Blackmore creste din
nou, rezultand plecarea lui Blackmore, aceasta
fiind definitiva pana in azi. Este adus Joe
Satriani
In urma
succes in anii 90, lansand albumele Purpendicular in 1996
si Abandon in 1998. Iar restul perioadei este petrecut in
cea mai mare parte in turnee. Trupa si-a continuat
activitatea in aceasta formula pana in 2002, cand
proiecte solo (in special lucrari de orchestra). Veteranul
keybordist Don
Airey (Rainbow, Whitesnake), care a ajutat trupa in 2001, cand Lord era accidentat,
In 2003, Deep Purple au lansat
timpul cu lansarea unui album sub numele Rainbow, intitulat Strangers in Us All
Blackmore's Night.
In ciuda schimbarilor frecvente de componenta, trupa Deep Purple ramane un
nume prezent pe scena muzicala si in secolului 21.

Deep Purple survived a seemingly endless series of lineup changes and a dramatic mid-career shift
from grandiose progressive rock to ear-shattering heavy metal to emerge as a

true institution of the British hard rock community; once credited in the Guinness Book of World Records
as the globe's loudest band, their revolving-door roster launched the careers of performers including
Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, and Ian Gillan. Deep Purple was formed in Hertford, England, in
1968, with an inaugural lineup that featured guitarist Blackmore, vocalist Rod Evans, bassist Nick
Simper, keyboardist Jon Lord, and drummer Ian Paice. Initially dubbed Roundabout, the group was first
assembled as a session band for ex-Searchers drummer Chris Curtis but quickly went their own way,
touring Scandinavia before beginning work on their debut LP, Shades of Deep Purple. The most pop-
oriented release of their career, the album generated a Top Five American hit with its reading of Joe
South's "Hush" but otherwise went unnoticed at home. The Book of Taliesyn followed (in the U.S. only)
in 1969, again cracking the U.S. Top 40 with a cover of Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman." With their
self-titled third LP, Deep Purple's ambitions grew, however; the songs reflecting a new complexity and
density as Lord's classically influenced keyboards assumed a much greater focus. Soon after the
album's release, their American label Tetragrammaton folded, and with the dismissals of Evans and
Simper, the band started fresh, recruiting singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover from the ranks of
the pop group Episode Six. The revamped Deep Purple's first album, 1970's Concerto for Group and
Orchestra, further sought to fuse rock and classical music. When the project, which was recorded with
the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, was poorly received, Blackmore took creative control of the band,
steering it towards a heavier, guitar-dominated approach which took full advantage of Gillan's powerful
vocals. The gambit worked; 1970's Deep Purple in Rock heralded the beginning of the group's most
creatively and commercially successful period. At home, the album sold over a million copies, with the
subsequent non-LP single "Black Night" falling just shy of topping the U.K. pop charts. 1971's Fireball
was also a smash, scoring a hit with "Strange Kind of Woman." Plans to record the follow-up at the
Casino in Montreux, Switzerland, were derailed after the venue burned down during a live appearance
by Frank Zappa, but the experience inspired Deep Purple's most enduring hit, the AOR staple "Smoke
on the Water." The song, featured on the multi-platinum classic Machine Head, reached the U.S. Top
Five in mid-1972 and positioned Deep Purple among rock's elite; the band consolidated its status with
the 1973 studio follow-up Who Do We Think We Are and the hit "Woman From Tokyo." However, long-
simmering creative differences between Blackmore and Gillan pushed the latter out of the group that
same year, with Glover soon exiting as well; singer David Coverdale and bassist/singer Glenn Hughes
were recruited for 1974's Burn, and Gillan meanwhile formed a band bearing his own name. After
completing 1974's Stormbringer, Blackmore left Deep Purple to form Rainbow with vocalist Ronnie
James Dio; his replacement was ex-James Gang guitarist Tommy Bolin, who made his debut on Come
Taste the Band. All the changes clearly took their toll, however, and following a farewell tour, the group
dissolved in 1976 with Coverdale going on to form Whitesnake; Bolin died of a drug overdose later in
the year. The classic lineup of Blackmore, Gillan, Lord, Glover, and Paice reunited Deep Purple in 1984
for a new album, the platinum smash Perfect Strangers; The House of Blue Light followed three years
later, but as past tensions resurfaced, Gillan again exited in mid-1989. Onetime Rainbow vocalist Joe
Lynn Turner was recruited for 1990's Slaves and Masters before Gillan again rejoined to record The
Battle Rages On..., an apt title as Blackmore quit the group midway through the supporting tour, to be
temporarily replaced by Joe Satriani.

In 1994, Steve Morse took over the guitar slot, fresh from a stint in Kansas; the revitalized group
returned to the studio for 1996's Purpendicular, which proved a success among the Purple faithful.
1998's Abandon followed, as well as a 1999 orchestral performance released the following year as Live
at the Royal Albert Hall. Deep Purple was given the box set treatment the same year with the four-disc
set Shades: 1968-1998, which collected hits, demos, live takes, and unreleased tracks from throughout
the years (touching upon all of Purple's different lineups). The late '90s/early 2000s saw the release of
several other archival releases and collections (Machine Head 25th Anniversary, Friends & Relatives,
Rhino's The Very Best Of, and Days May Come and Days May Go: The 1975 California Rehearsals), as
well as a slew of DVDs (Total Abandon: Live Australia 1999, In Concert with the London Symphony
Orchestra, Bombay Calling, and New Live & Rare). Former member Blackmore also kept himself busy
after leaving the band by issuing a single album with his briefly resuscitated outfit Rainbow (1998's
Stranger in Us All), before forming the Renaissance-inspired Blackmore's Night with fiancée/vocalist
Candice Night. Despite numerous lineup upheavals during their career, Deep Purple remains alive and
well in the 21st century. ~ Jason Ankeny & Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Mistreated

(Blackmore/Coverdale)

I've been mistreated, I've been abused.

I've been struck downhearted, baby, I've been confused
'cause I know, yes, I know I've been mistreated.
Since my baby left me I've been losing my mind, you know I have.

I've been lonely, I've been cold.

I've been looking for a woman to have and hold
'cause I know, yes, I know I've been mistreated.
Since my baby left me I've been losing, I've been losing,
I've been losing my mind, baby baby babe.

I've been mistreated, I've been abused.

I've been looking for a woman, yeh, I've been confused
'cause I know, yes, I know I've been mistreated, ooh o-o-oh.
Since my baby left me I've been losing, losing,
I've been losing my mind, baby baby babe.
Oh oh oh, oh woman, oh woman, oh woman.

I've been losing my mind.

Smoke On The Water

We all come out to Montreux on the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile we didn't have much time
Frank Zappa and the Mothers were at the pest place around
But some stupid with the flure gun burned the place to the ground

Smoke on the water and fire in the sky

Smoke on the water

They burned down the danbling house it died with an awful sound
Funke and Cloud was running in and out pulling kids out the ground
When it all way over we had to find another place
It seemed that we would lose the race

Smoke on the water and fire in the sky

Smoke on the water

We ended up in the Grand Hotel, it way empty, cool and fare

But with the Rolling truck Stones things just outside waking our music here
With the few red lights and a few old beds we made a place to sweat
No matter what we got out of this I know, I know we'll never forget

Smoke on the water and fire in the sky

Smoke on the water

Soldier Of Fortune

Blackmore/Coverdale

I have often told you stories

About the way
I lived the life of a drifter
Waiting for the day
When I'd take your hand
And sing you songs
Then maybe you would say
Come lay with me love me
And I would surely stay

But I feel I'm growing older

And the songs that I have sung
Echo in the distance
Like the sound
Of a windmill goin' 'round
I guess I'll always be
A soldier of fortune

Many times I've been a traveller

I looked for something new
In days of old
When nights were cold
I wandered without you
But those days I thougt my eyes
Had seen you standing near
Though blindness is confusing
It shows that you're not here

Now I feel I'm growing older

And the songs that I have sung
Echo in the distance
Like the sound
Of a windmill goin' 'round
I guess I'll always be
A soldier of fortune
Yes, I can hear the sound
Of a windmill goin' 'round
I guess I'll always be
A soldier of fortune

Depeche Mode is an electronic music band from the town of Basildon, England,
founded in 1980. They have been one of the longest-lived and most successful bands
to have emerged during the New Wave and New Romantic era, though they are more
akin to what was known as the 'Futurist' scene; many of their videos have been
heavily rotated on MTV. As of 2006, it is estimated that Depeche Mode has sold over
72 million albums worldwide. They have influenced many of today's popular
recording artists, in part due to their innovative work, recording techniques and use of
sampling. In their home country, the U.K, they are still thought of by some as an
"Eighties band". Though massively influential in the modern electronic dance scene,
they remain in the alternative genre.

The three current members of Depeche Mode are:

 Martin Gore (primary songwriting, vocals, guitars, keyboards)

 David Gahan (lead vocals, recent songwriting)
 Andrew Fletcher (keyboards)

Former members include:

 Alan Wilder (production, keyboards, drums, vocals, occasional songwriting)

from 1982 to 1995.
 Vince Clarke (primary songwriting, keyboards), from 1980 to 1981.

Early history

Depeche Mode, circa 1981. From left to right: Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher, Dave
Gahan, Vince Clarke.

Depeche Mode's origins can be traced back to 1976, when Vince Clarke and Andrew
Fletcher formed a band known as "No Romance in China." In 1978, Vince played
guitar in an 'Ultravox rip-off band', "The Plan", with school friend Robert Marlow. In
1978-9, Martin Gore, played in an acoustic duo, "Norman and The Worms", with
school friend Philip Burdett (now a singer on the folk circuit). Both bands were
unsuccessful. In 1979, Robert, Martin and Vince formed a band called "The French
Look", with Robert on vocals, Martin on guitar and Vince on keyboards. In March
1980, Vince, Martin and Andrew formed a band called "Composition of Sound", with
Vince on vocals/guitar, Martin on keyboards and Andrew on Bass. "The French
Look" and "Composition of Sound" actually played live together in June 1980 at St.
Nicholas School in Southend-on-sea, Essex. Not too long after the formation of
"Composition of Sound", Vince and Andy switched to synthesizers, working odd jobs
to buy them, or borrowing them from friends. David Gahan joined the band in 1980
after Vince Clarke heard him perform at a local scout-hut jam session, crooning to a
rendition of David Bowie's 'Heroes'. "Depeche Mode" was born. The new name was
taken from a French fashion magazine, "Dépêche mode", which translates to "Fashion
Update" or "Fashion News Dispatch" (dépêche = dispatch) though it has commonly
been mistranslated as "Fast Fashion."
The band became part of Daniel Miller's Mute label by verbal contract, and released
their first album, Speak and Spell, in 1981. While the band was promoting the album,
Vince Clarke began to publicly admit his discomfort with the level of success that
Depeche Mode was achieving; he felt they were becoming too popular. Soon after,
Vince Clarke left and went on to form several other bands including Yazoo (Yaz in
the U.S.) with Alison Moyet, The Assembly with Eric Radcliffe, and later Erasure
with Andy Bell.

After Clarke's departure, Martin Gore, who had written "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and "Big
Muff" on their debut album, took over as the band's primary songwriter and in 1982
the album A Broken Frame was released by the remaining trio. Prior to this, Alan
Wilder replaced Vince Clarke on tour, but he did not contribute to A Broken Frame.
Shortly afterwards, he became a full-fledged member of Depeche Mode, in time for
their 1983 non-album single "Get the Balance Right". He wrote "The Landscape is
Changing" and "Two Minute Warning" for their 1983 album, Construction Time
Again, "In Your Memory," the B-side to the "People Are People" single, and "If You
Want" on the 1984 album Some Great Reward, an co-writes with Martin Gore
"Fools", the B-side to the "Love, in Itself" single but his main contribution to Depeche
Mode was in technical and musical production.

In the early 1980s the band's popularity was largely confined to Europe (particularly
Germany). However, in 1984 Depeche Mode made inroads into the U.S., spawning
the North American-only releases of the compilations People Are People and their
1985 release, Catching Up with Depeche Mode, the former featuring their first
transatlantic hit, "People Are People".

This period is seen as the beginning of the band's long (and misinterpreted)
association with Britain's Gothic movement that was gaining popularity in America.
Interestingly, the music intelligentsia in Britain dismissed Depeche Mode throughout
the 1980s as "fluffy synthesized teenybopper pop stars" because of the cheery and
"cute" style of many of their early songs, such as "Just Can't Get Enough," despite the
darker overtones that had begun to emerge in their music. At the same time, in
Germany and other countries in continental Europe, Depeche Mode were considered
major teen heartthrobs. But in America, where the band's music had first gained
popularity on college radio and non-mainstream alternative-rock stations such as the
legendary KROQ in Los Angeles, Depeche Mode's appeal was to a decidedly
different, more cultish audience.

Depeche Mode, circa 1984. Left: Martin Gore (top), Alan Wilder (bottom). Right:
Andy Fletcher (top), Dave Gahan (bottom).
The "Gothic" tag, in the U.S., may have owed more to its sound than to its image, due
to the band's late exposure to the American market and its unfortunate string of
inconsistent, budget-driven music videos prior to this time. As heard with 1984's
"Blasphemous Rumours", a bitter commentary on the unfairness of life, and the B-
side to 1985's poor "It's Called a Heart", called "Fly on the Windscreen" (thereafter
remixed and released as "Fly on the Windscreen - Final" on the 1986 album Black
Celebration), lead songwriter Martin Gore began a decade-long descent into dark,
brooding synthesized music. At the time, many associated this sound with that of the
then-ascendent Goth movement.

The first five years of Depeche Mode's career was documented by a singles
compilation ("The Singles 81-85"). The compilation was revised and retitled in North
America as the aforementioned "Catching Up with Depeche Mode".

After the video of their 1986 single "A Question of Time" garnered attention, its
director Anton Corbijn began a long-lasting friendship and working relationship with
the band, eventually directing 20 of their videos (the latest being 2006's "Suffer
Well"). For his part, Corbijn -- an internationally renowned photographer and newly
emerging music video director (U2's "Pride (In the Name of Love)" (1984) and Echo
and the Bunnymen's "Bring on the Dancing Horses" (1985)) -- was catapulted into
near stardom, eventually directing music videos for the likes of Joy Division
("Atmosphere" (1988)), Front 242 ("Headhunter" (1988), "Tragedy for You" (1991)),
Bryan Adams, Nirvana, and U2 ("One" (1991), "Please" (1997), "Electrical Storm"
(2002)). With a newly-coherent, striking image and a brooding sound, the band
resonated with an emerging taste for all things Gothic in the U.S. On the heels of their
ironically titled 1987 album Music for the Masses, Depeche Mode played a follow-up
world tour in 1987-88, to sold-out venues.

Middle history

Depeche Mode, circa 1990.

In the mid-1980s and 1990s, the band's popularity in the U.S. grew, as did their
influence on the emerging techno and house music scenes. Techno pioneers Derrick
May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins regularly quoted Depeche Mode as an
influence in their development of proto-techno music during the Detroit Techno
explosion in the late 1980s.

The band's 1987-88 Music for the Masses tour culminated in a final concert at the
Pasadena Rose Bowl with a sell-out attendance of 80,000 (the highest in 8 years for
the venue). The tour was documented in a film by D.A. Pennebaker, notable for its
portrayal of fan interaction. An album release of the concert, titled 101 (the show was
the 101st and final stop on the tour) became a bestseller in 1989.

Later that year, after Martin Gore had made a brief detour to record his "Counterfeit
EP", with six cover versions of some of his favourite songs, the band recorded the
bluesy country-western-influenced "Personal Jesus", in Milan. Prior to its release,
advertisements were placed in the personal columns of UK regional newspapers with
the words "Your own personal Jesus." Later, the ads included a phone number which,
if dialed, played the song. The ensuing controversy helped propel the single to
number 13 on the UK charts, becoming one of their biggest sellers and their first gold
single in the U.S.

Depeche Mode, circa 1993.

In February 1990, "Enjoy the Silence", one of Depeche Mode's most successful
singles to date, reached #6 in the UK. It won 'Best Single' at the Brit Awards. To
promote their new album Violator, they held an in-store autograph signing in Los
Angeles, which attracted 17,000 fans. The album (Top Ten in the UK and U.S.) and
the subsequent World Violation Tour were further successes. To date, the album has
gone triple platinum in the U.S., selling over three million units. Notably, 40,000
tickets for the (New York) Giants Stadium show sold within 8 hours, and 48,000
tickets for the (Los Angeles) Dodger Stadium show sold within an hour of going on
sale.

By 1991, Depeche Mode had emerged as one of the world's most successful acts,
relying on a proto-techno sound to distinguish themselves. A one-off contribution to
the Wim Wenders film, "Until the End of the World", entitled "Death's Door" and
another solo album released by Alan Wilder under the Recoil moniker bridged the gap
between albums.
The band changed pace in 1993 with Songs of Faith and Devotion, an album that
hardened the group's sound. The album moved away from keyboards and synthesizer
influences, for the second time introducing live drums by Wilder (the first time being
the track "Clean", on Violator) and outside musicians into the music. The album
debuted at number 1 in both the U.S. and the UK; highlights included the country-
blues/techno "I Feel You", the soulful "Walking in My Shoes", and the gospel-tinged
"Condemnation". The 14-month "Devotional" world tour followed. A second live
album, Songs of Faith and Devotion Live, was released in December of 1993;
essentially a track-by-track reproduction of the eponymous album, it proved a critical
and commercial failure. Strains became apparent when Fletcher declined to
participate in the second "exotic" leg of the tour, due to "mental instability." During
that period, Daryl Bamonte, who worked with the band as personal assistant for many
years, filled in for him.

Depeche Mode, circa 1997.

In June 1995 after the tour Alan Wilder left the band citing "unsatisfactory internal
working conditions"; he continued to work on his personal project, Recoil.
Contributing factors that have been suggested include the drug addiction issues of
Dave Gahan, Martin Gore's admission of "battling his own demons" at this time, and
growing tensions between Wilder and Andrew Fletcher. Wilder had stated that he
contributed a lion's share of work while receiving the least credit on past albums. His
departure was quickly followed by news of Gahan overdosing at his home in L.A.; he
later entered a drug rehabilitation program to battle a heroin addiction.

In 1996, with Gahan out of rehab, Depeche Mode held recording sessions with
producer Tim Simenon; the next year, the album Ultra and its two preceding singles,
"Barrel of a Gun" and "It's No Good", were released to critical acclaim. The album
again debuted at #1, but the band declined to tour, perhaps on account of the results of
the 'Devotional' tour. They did, however, perform a series of Ultra 'Parties' for the
music press and selected attendees designed to highlight the key tracks on the album.

A second singles compilation The Singles 86>98 followed in 1998, with the new
track "Only When I Lose Myself". The band set off on a 4 month tour that cemented
their place as a quasi-permanent attraction, with a large touring attendance regardless
of album sales. (U2, the Rolling Stones, and Rod Stewart are some others in this
category).
Also in 1998, a tribute album For the Masses was released. It featured songs from the
Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure, The Deftones, and even Rammstein. It is the best
known Depeche Mode tribute album, but most certainly not the only one.

Depeche Mode in the 2000s

Depeche Mode, circa 2001.

While Depeche Mode remain popular in the U.S. and Western Europe, its most loyal
fan base and widest appeal seems to lie in Central Europe and Eastern Europe fed by
the timely confluence of several key events in this part of the world in the early 90s:
the then world-wide popularity of Depeche Mode and synthesized dance music in
general (which has since waned in the U.S.), the collapse of communism, and the rise
of the Internet with the instant access this brought to a region thirsting for western
music and ideals. Today there are countless fan-created web sites, in nearly every
language, propelling the band to perpetual fame.

In 2001, Depeche Mode released Exciter, which did not place well in the charts
outside of Continental Europe. Although it spawned several dance club hits such as
Danny Tenaglia's remixes of "I Feel Loved", many fans felt the album was uninspired
and underproduced, although the record was noted as containing some of the strongest
vocal stylings of Dave Gahan since joining the band. Web blogs from L.A. to Sydney
questioned if this wasn't a manifestation that indeed Depeche Mode had in essence
broken up with the departure of Alan Wilder in 1995. Shortly after the Exciter tour,
Martin and Dave seemed to sense that this would be a good time to busy themselves
with new solo efforts.

2003 saw the release of Dave Gahan's solo album, Paper Monsters, followed by a
worldwide tour and a DVD taken from it, titled Live Monsters; Martin Gore continued
his solo career with the release of Counterfeit² (additional covers of some of Martin's
most beloved and influential songs first canonised in his 1989 release Counterfeit);
and Andrew Fletcher launched his own label, Toast Hawaii (the most notable
outcome of which has so far been the female synth-pop duo,Client).

In August 2004, Mute released the DVD version of "Devotional," filmed during their
world tour in 1993, and a new remix compilation album Remixes 81-04 that covers
some new & unreleased promo mixes of the singles from 1981 to 2004, highlighted
with a re-release and new renditions of their classic Enjoy the Silence. The single
peaked at #7 in the UK, but did poorly in the U.S.. On October 18, the Depeche Mode
fansite Depechemode.tv ([1]) took top honours at the BT 2005 Digital Music Awards,
further reflecting the enduring popularity of the band. It was also during this time that
Martin, in an interview on BBC Radio's Stuart Maconie show on September 5th,
revealed that he was currently going through a divorce.

On October 17, 2005, the band released their long awaited 11th studio album Playing
the Angel and received very good reviews. Many fans felt this album was their true
return to form.

Depeche Mode, circa 2005.

Produced by Ben Hillier, this top ten hit (peaking at #1 in several European countries)
featured the hit single "Precious", peaking at #4 in the UK charts. The album was
backed by the band's first in-store signing since 1990, on the day of release in New
York City. Worthy of note is that this was the first DM album to feature songs written
by frontman David Gahan and is the first album in 21 years to feature songs not
written by Martin Gore, that last album being 1984's Some Great Reward. Several
months prior to its official release, a prototype of the video for "Precious" was leaked
onto the internet, resulting in the arrest of a Polish citizen. Meanwhile, the official
video was released on September 12 on the Depeche Mode website,
www.depechemode.com. To promote the album, the band launched a worldwide tour
in November, taking them to fans in North America and Europe. The tour continues
thru the spring & summer of 2006. It will include more European dates, North
American dates (Depeche Mode were the headliners for the 2006 Coachella Valley
Music & Arts Festival) and possibly even South America. The second single from the
album, "A Pain That I'm Used To", was released on December 12, and the third single
from the album was "Suffer Well", the first Depeche Mode single ever to have been
written by lead vocalist David Gahan. (To see information on "Touring the Angel"
and other Depeche Mode tours, view Depeche Mode Tours)

In march 2006, the website announced two dates in Mexico (a country they had not
visited for twelve years). More than 55 000 tickets for a stadium in Mexico city were
sold inmediately, making the band give another date for that venue and showing that
the popularity of the band in that country is as big as in many other countries in
Europe.
On April 3, 2006, remastered editions of Speak & Spell, Music for the Masses, and
Violator were released, featuring remastered audio on CD and SACD, and extra tracks
and vintage interviews. The other seven pre-Playing the Angel Depeche Mode albums
are set to be re-released sometime later in 2006. In addition, there will be a "best-of"
compilation at the end of the year, featuring a new single "Martyr for Love" (an
outtake from the Playing the Angel sessions that was considered a strong first single
but not a match in tone for the dark album), and a Playing the Angel live DVD in the
fall. Member Andrew 'Fletch' Fletcher has been quoted as saying that one or two more
new tracks are possible for the upcoming compilation or single in several Mexican
interviews, mirroring the format of their last compilation CD The Singles (86-98) and
Only When I Lose Myself with Surrender and Headstar.

To date, Depeche Mode has sold about 72 million albums worldwide (releasing a new
studio album every four years since mid-career), and has cemented their position as
one of the most popular recording and live performance artists of all time. Their
music has been featured in a variety of soundtracks including the video game Grand
Theft Auto: San Andreas

Also in 2006, they have announced that their upcoming single release "Suffer Well"
will also be sung in Simlish as it is featured on The Sims 2: Open for Business PC
game soundtrack along with accompanying video (the group featured as Sims). Of
course, the conventional video and single will be done in English. They join 1980s
stars, Kajagoogoo and Howard Jones in the PC game as musical contributors with
their performances in Simlish.

Trivia
 There is a basement bar in Tallinn, Estonia exclusively devoted to the band,
playing nothing but their videos and music. Among the memorabilia on
display is a photo of Martin Gore visiting the bar.
 In the UK, Depeche Mode have had more top 40 hit singles without a number
one than any other artist.

This article is about the Norwegian band. For the geologic feature in Iceland,
see Dimmuborgir.

Dimmu Borgir is a Norwegian symphonic black metal band whose music has been
very popular in several Scandinavian countries and Germany. "Dimmu Borgir" means
"Dark Citadel/Castle/Fortress" in Icelandic, and is actually the name of an area of lava
formations close to Mývatn, a lake in Iceland.

Biography
Dimmu Borgir was originally founded in 1993 by Shagrath, Silenoz, and Tjodalv. The
band released an EP entitled Inn I Evighetens Mørke (1994) translated to English the
title means "Into The Darkness of Eternity". This short EP sold out within weeks, and
the band followed up with the full length album For All Tid (1994). This album
featured musical contributions by members of Dødheimsgard and Ved Buens Ende.
Interestingly enough, Shagrath played drums with Tjodalv on guitar and Erkekjetter
(translating "arch heretic") Silenoz covering vocals. This lineup changed before the
release of Stormblåst (translates to "Storm Blown") on Cacophonous Records in 1996.
Stormblåst received high praise from many melodic black metal fans, and is often
regarded a highlight of the band's career. It is also the last album which features all
lyrics written and sung in Norwegian.

After Stormblåst, Dimmu Borgir's career took a sharp turn. Keyboardist Stian Aarstad
left the band due to his obligation to serve in the Norwegian army, thus he was not
able to participate in the recording of Devil's Path (1996). That period was also
marked by the leave of their bassist Brynjard Tristan and the arrival of Nagash. Stian
Aarstad returned for the recording of Enthrone Darkness Triumphant (1997). On the
tour to support the album he had trouble attending rehearsals and tour dates, and he
was fired from the band. Enthrone Darkness Triumphant was a huge success for the
band, and it was their first release signed to the famous German record label Nuclear
Blast. It was recorded in the Abyss Studios, owned by Hypocrisy's mainman Peter
Tägtgren.

After the tour for Enthrone Darkness Triumphant the band recruited new members
Mustis on keyboards and Astennu on second guitar so that Shagrath could concentrate
on vocals.

"Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia"

Dimmu Borgir's following full-length albums Spiritual Black Dimensions (1999) and
Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia (2001) both met critical acclaim. Some fans
accused the band of "selling out" due to the mass audiences which the albums
reached.
The band has stated that they are not "commercially-oriented", and instead they
simply wish to spread their music to more people. In 2003, Dimmu Borgir used their
major record label financial leverage to create a monumental album titled Death Cult
Armageddon. Sections of the album were recorded with the Czech Philharmonic
Orchestra to enhance the classical arrangements which have always augmented the
band's style.

In 2005, the band did a complete re-recording of the Stormblåst album, featuring
Mayhem member Hellhammer as the session drummer.

Controversy
"Sorgens Kammer" is a cover of a song taken from an Amiga game called Agony.
Stian Aarstad used the melody, but did not tell anyone about it. The band always
thought it was their own song until the original composer contacted them. Because of
this, they removed the song from the 2005 version of Stormblåst. It was replaced by a
previously unreleased track called "Sorgens Kammer - del II"

In C.S. Lewis' famous book Narnia; The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, a
demon named Silenoz is mentioned at the back of an autobiographical book in Mr.
Tumnus' house.

Many metal/guitar enthusiasts do not realize the fact that Dimmu Borgir uses mainly
standard guitar tuning. Following the release of " Death Cult Armageddon", the band's
guitarists were interviewed by the major guitar publication "Guitar World". In that
interview, the guitarists stated that they used mainly standard 6 string tuning, (or other
wise known as "E") the guitarists also stated they used standard 7 string guitars, but
rarely. They also stated that the heaviness of riffs and guitar/bass parts of they songs
is attributed to the fact that they are using a dual-guitar setup and that both of them
use "special" types of power chords to make those parts sound heavier and more
aggressive. The special powerchords are simply a normal powerchord, except the
middle note, the dominant, is down two semitones or frets, known as a second
inversion.

that like a hardcore band, everything must be forced

again, that has never necessarily been an indication
of quality.

BIOGRAPHY
The name Dimmu Borgir is taken from a large
area of unusually shaped lava fields east of Lake
Mývatn on Iceland. The word Dimmu means
foggy or dark and Borgir means castle or
fortress. The band was originally formed in 1993
by Shagrath, Silenoz and Tjodalv. Shortly
Brynjard Tristan and Stian Aarstad also joined
the band.

They began their musical career with the release

of a 7" EP called "Inn I Evighetens Mørke"
("Into The Eternity Of Darkness") in 1994.
Within a few weeks it had already sold out. In
late 1994 they released their debut full-length
album named "For All Tid" ("Forever"). This
album featured contributions by Aldrahn from Dødheimsgård and Vicotnik from Ved
Buens Ende.

In 1996 they released one of the most important albums in black metal history namely
"Stormblåst" ("Stormwind"). This album showed the true talent of Dimmu Borgir with
mature song writing and a strong influence from classical music.

On the first two albums the band wrote all lyrics in Norwegian but after the release of
"Stormblåst" they switched over to English because of the increasing popularity of the
band.

In 1996 they released the "Devils´s Path" MCD on Hot Records where Shagrath worked,
taking care of signing and promotion of the label´s bands. Stian Aarstad did not play the
keyboards on this album since he had to serve in the army.

In 1997 they released "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" which was produced by Peter
Tägtgren (Hypocrisy, Pain, The Abyss). This album was a huge success and it sold more
than 150,000 copies. Dimmu Borgir was now one of the biggest black metal bands ever.
The lyrics of "Tormentor of Christian Souls" were left out in the booklet since Nuclear
Blast did not want to be responsible for the printing of them.

After the recording of this album the band hired the Australian Astennu (Lord Kaos,
Carpe Tenebrum, The Kovenant) to play guitars on live shows so that Shagrath could
concentrate on his vocals. Astennu replaced Jens Petter who was a member of the band
for a short period between "Stormblåst" and "Enthrone…". After the "Enthrone…" tour,
Dimmu Borgir had a mini-tour where Tjodalv left the band for a few months to be with
his family and newborn child. His replacement was Aggressor (Ved Buens Ende, Aura
Noir), filling in as a session drummer. In the "Enthrone…" tour, Stian Aarstad had trouble
participating in some of the performances and was fired from the band. Stian Aarstad has
now joined the Norwegian black metal band Enthral. After he left Kimberley Goss
(Therion, Ancient, Sinergy) joined the band for a very short time as a session keyboardist.
She was replaced by the young Mustis who was a friend of Shagrath. He played live with
the band for the first time at the Dynamo Open Air festival 1998.

In 1998 Nuclear Blast decided to re-release the debut album "For all Tid". This album
contains all of the original material and includes two songs from their 7" EP "Inn I
Evighetens Mørke". That very year Dimmu Borgir also released a MCD called "Godless
Savage Garden".

The next album "Spiritual Black Dimensions" was once again recorded at the famous
Abyss Studios with Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy, Pain, The Abyss). A month after the
release of this album Dimmu Borgir made a split album with Old Man's Child called
"Sons of Satan Gather for Attack" which was released on Hammerheart.

Early on the 1999 tour in the US Tjodalv decided to leave the band due to musical and
personal differences. He had a family to take care of and could not do the immense
touring of Dimmu Borgir. Tjodalv was replaced by well-known Nick Barker from Cradle
Of Filth.

In March 2000 the band was ready to start the recording of a new album. They had
booked The Abyss Studio but needed more time to finish the new material and also
suffered some financial problems. Nick was still living in London and could not afford to
come to Norway too often.

Their sixth full-length album is entitled "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia" and was
recorded at the famous Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden September-November
2000 with Fredrik Nordström who has also produced At The Gates, In Flames and lots
more. It will be released in March 2001.

Subgenres:

Amid the fiery chaos of the early ?90s Norwegian black metal scene arose a
maelstrom of raw violence named Dimmu Borgir. Founding members Shagrath
(vocals/drums), Silenoz (guitar), and Tjodalv (guitar) sought to blaze their own dark
path through the hostile underworld of the burgeoning scene by combining the
bleakness of ?80s black metal and a few classical touches with more traditional heavy
metal riffing. The band solidified in 1993 after being joined by Brynjard Tristan on
bass and Stian Aarstad on keyboards. The fearsome five-piece recorded a 7" EP called
Inn I Evighetens Morke ("Into the Eternity of Darkness") for Necromantic Gallery
Productions in 1994. While the EP sold out in just a few weeks, Dimmu Borgir failed
to receive the attention they deserved.
All that changed in late ?94 when the band released their hellacious full-length debut
For All Tid on No Colours Records (re-released by Nuclear Blast in 1998). Featuring
contributions from Aldrain of D?msgard and Vicotnik from Ved Buens Ende, For All
Tid was a slow, dark, atmospheric album that immediately established Dimmu Borgir
as one of the most promising bands in the Norwegian scene. In 1996 the band only
reinforced that fact by releasing Stormbl 峴 on Cacaphonous Records. The album
showed an increase in speed while still maintaining the melody and atmosphere that
characterized For All Tid. The band made a line-up move with Tjodalv taking over
drums and Shagrath doubling up on guitar and vocals instead. Dimmu Borgir closed
out 1996 with the Devil?s Path MCD and another line-up change. Nagash (Troll,
Covenant) joined on bass, replacing the departed Tristan. Released on Hot Records,
where Shagrath worked at the time, Devil?s Path featured the incredible title track,
two versions of Celtic Frost?s "Nocturnal Fear," as well as an early version of the now
classic song "Master of Disharmony."

After establishing themselves in the top-tier of the Norwegian black metal scene,
Dimmu Borgir set their misanthropic minds on conquering the rest of the world. With
one fell swoop of their blackened magic Dimmu Borgir unleashed an album of such
immense proportions that all in its path were simply consumed by the ensuing
darkness. Enthrone Darkness Triumphant (1997) was an unparalleled international
breakthrough, selling in excess of 150,000 copies. This landmark release not only
marked their first release for Nuclear Blast but also became their first English
language album. Produced by Peter T 䧴 gren (Immortal, Marduk, Destruction) at his
nefarious Abyss Studios, Enthrone Darkness Triumphant explored new areas of
classically induced melodious aggression. T 䧴 gren?s production provided a
powerful, clean sound that had been sorely absent from the black metal scene. The
combination of excellent production and memorable songwriting made Enthrone
Darkness Triumphant a benchmark black metal release.

To initiate new members into the brood of Borgir, the band released Godless Savage
Garden in 1998. While the MCD served as the recording debut of new members
Mustis (replacing the fired Aarstad) and the Covenant?s Astennu (hired to relieve
Shagrath on guitar so he could concentrate solely on vocals), it also acted as a "stop-
gap" between releases, keeping the band?s name in the press and fresh in fans? minds.
It worked, passing all expectations and being nominated for a Spellemannsprisen ? a
Norwegian Grammy ? in the metal category. Unfortunately, the band lost to the
Covenant for their Nexus Polaris album.

Undeterred, Dimmu Borgir unleashed Spiritual Black Dimensions on March 1, 1999.

The album took fans and press alike by storm, proving that Dimmu Borgir are the true
kings of the blackened throne. T 䧴 gren once again helped the band deliver a
complexly layered and powerfully enchanting album. The band also expanded their
boundaries by enlisting the help of Borknagar vocalist/bassist Simen Hestn 泒 (a.k.a.
Vortex) ethereal vocals. Soon after the recording, Nagash left the fold to pursue the
Covenant (now called The Kovenant) full-time. Vortex easily stepped in to fill the
vacated bass slot. More trouble arose when Tjodalv (now with Susperia) couldn?t
commit to the extensive world touring, but things soon fell into place when Nick
Barker (ex-Cradle of Filth) signed on.

Now, after two years of studio silence, Dimmu Borgir have returned with their coup
de grace, Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia. After already leaving an indelible mark
upon the black metal world, the Black Hearted Angels have now turned to expanding
their dark art by stretching their leathery wings a bit. The "Fear and Wonder" lulls the
listener in with its soundtrack-like eloquence, but all thoughts of a serene album are
shattered when "Blessings Upon the Throne of Tyranny" rages out of the speakers
like an unleashed beast. "Kings of the Carnival Creation" and "Hybrid Stigmata"
show a nice tempo variance from the blasting opener, but it?s "Puritania" that truly
shows the diversity Dimmu Borgir achieves on Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia.
The electronic-tinged vocals and pseudo industrial feel make the song unlike anything
they have done before. It?s these efforts to remain true to their past while exploring
new avenues of sound and artistry that set this album apart.

Seeking a new outlet for their creative output, the band decided to leave the
comfortable bowels of Abyss Studios, opting instead to enter the icy lair known as
Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden. Producer Fredrik Nordstr? (In Flames, Arch
Enemy, Dark Tranquillity) technical approach replaces the thick, reverb heavy sound
of the band?s past two efforts with a refined, slick sharpness that cuts to the bone,
transforming Dimmu Borgir from a lumbering behemoth into a stealthy assassin. And
like all good assassins, Dimmu Borgir have many weapons at their disposal. Vortex
(now a permanent member after leaving Borknagar) again weaves his operatic vocals
around Shagrath?s aggressive growl, giving the songs added depth and texture, while
new guitarist Galder (Old Man?s Child mastermind ? who replaces the "released"
Astennu) brings a veteran attitude and welcome experience with arrangements. They
even add a "seventh" member in the form of the Gothenburg Opera Orchestra on a
few tracks. The Dimmu Borgir that greets 2001 undoubtedly sports the most superior
lineup of the band?s history, helping lift Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia beyond
anything else in the field of extreme metal.

grupului Fimbulwinter, Shagrath, iar mai apoi apare si Tjodalv (chitara, ex-Old Man’s Child) si
alcatuiesc Dimmu Borgir.
Aarstad (ex-Old Man’s Child) pe post de clapar de studio (va deveni, in cele din urma, membru
permanent). Imediat dupa aceea se pun, astfel, bazele unui prim produs, un 7" EP intitulat "Inn I
Evighetens Mørke" ("In Eternitatea Regatului Intunericului"), ce va aparea in 1994 printr-o casa de
discuri marunta numita Necromantik Gallery Productions.
For All Tid" (inregistrat in studioul Stovner

considerat o adevarata revelatie a muzicii black-metal si raspandit in peste 25.000 de copii.
acestia le permit ca in acelasi an sa editeze prin casa germana Hot Records, unde lucra si Shagrath,
O alta reiterare a violentei musicale
sub titulatura primei sale formatii desfintate in acelasi an, Fimbulwinter, singurul album al acesteia
"Servants Of Sorcery".

vandute in intreaga lume.
Totusi, teritoriul
european se arata cel mai propice pentru Dimmu Borgir, in special in Germania, piata muzicala cea
mai prolifica in ultimii zece ani.
binecunoscutul si talentatul producator Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy, The Abyss, Pain, ex-Lock Up).
urma. Astfel, Nuclear Blast Germany si-a declinat responsabilitatea in privinta mesajului clar anti-
crestin, insa filiala lor din State (Nuclear Blast America) a avut, pana la urma, curajul sa le publice in
booklet-ul CD-ului.
100% partiturii vocale.
Inlocuitorul
nevoiti sa-l concedieze. Actualmente, acesta activeaza in formatia norvegiana de black-metal Enthral
care in 1998 scoate albumul "The Mirrors Opposite End".
scurt timp, clapara si vocalista Kimberly Goss (ex-Avernus, ex-Therion, ex-Ancient, Sinergy).
Dupa
The Gods Of Darkness Tour Nuclear Blast lanseaza in cursul aceluiasi an caseta video "Live &
facut dupa piesa "Mourning Palace".

In 1998 Nuclear Blast relanseaza primul material discografic semnat de Shagrath et CO., "For All
Tid", si tot in anul respectiv apare sub aceeasi egida MCD-ul "Godless Savage Garden". Un produs
ce contine doua noi cantece, doua reeditari, trei variante live si un cover de exceptie realizat
impecabil, ce va fi inclus si pe tributul oficial Accept, anume piesa "Metal Heart". EP-ul este foarte
bine primit si cotat ca cifra de vanzari si astfel este chiar nominalizat in data de 19 februarie 1999 la
Spellemannsprisen (Grammy-ul norvegian), categoria metal, alaturi de conationalii The Kovenant si
presteze nimic in cadrul programului.

1999. Inregistrat tot in vestitul The Abyss Studio cu acelasi Peter Tägtgren ca producator. Imediat ce
este introdus in magazinele de muzica albumul ajunge bestseller si ocupa direct locul 18 in topul
Oslo. In acelasi timp este si ultimul produs pe care mai apare Nagash, pleacat in tabara The
Kovenant.
Arcturus si Borknagar, Simen Hestnaes – mai nou I.C.S. Vortex. Acesta apare, de fapt, pe
"Spiritual…" cu elemente vocale curate si cu nuanta operala.

aparut la Hammerheart Records si avand titlul "Sons Of Satan Gather For Attack", care contine EP-
In ceea ce-l priveste pe Shagrath,
Insa, bateria incape pe mainile maestrului Nicholas Barker, cel
care fusese unul dintre fondatorii Cradle Of Filth.
Dimmu revine cu concertele in
America incepand cu 1 septembrie ’99, insotiti de Samael, Monstruosity si Epoch Of Unlight. In
Borknagar.
Death, si Peter Tägtgren, inlocuit acum cu Tomas Lindberg (ex-At The Gates, The Crown)

Dimensions", la categoria hardrock in cadrul decernarii premiilor "Spellemannsprisen". Celelalte
concurente au fost The Kovenant cu "Animatronic" si Black Debbath cu "Tung, Tung Politisk
rock". Programati pentru lunile martie si aprilie 2000 in studioul The Abyss cu producatorul Peter
financiar legate de Nick Barker care inca locuia in Anglia si nu-si putea permite sa vina in Norvegia

greseala.
Au existat in aceasta perioada unele zvonuri cum
Fredrik Nordström care lucrase inainte cu At The Gates, Arch Enemy, In Flames, Dark Tranquility
track, a cover-ului "Burn In Hell" dupa legendara formatie Twisted Sister (o alta mostra de
perfectiune interpretativa).
vocalistului Twisted Sister. Albumul are urmatoarele reusite in topurile din intreaga lume: locul 16 la
ei acasa, pozitia 16 in Germania, pozitia 60 in prima saptamana si a 23-a in cea de-a doua in Austria,
locul 11 in Finlanda si 84 in Olanda.

In aprilie sustin un turneu dincolo de ocean impartind scena cu Cannibal Corpse, The Haunted si
Lamb Of God. Ziua de 3 august ii afla drept headliner-i la Wacken Open Air 2001. A doua parte a
insurectiei americane cuprinzand U.S.A. si Canada si denumita sugestiv "Metallennium 2001 Tour" era
Lamb Of God, God Forbid si Darkest Hour.

Lucruri interesante despre Dimmu Borgir:

 Revista "Kerrang!" scrie in 31 octombrie 1998 despre accidentul destul de grav in care fusese
aka I.C.S. Vortex (ex-Borknagar, Arcturus).
200 in incinta barului Blaze Go – Go din Oslo.
sustinut in Brazilia a fost anulat din motivul ca in acelasi weekend fusesera programati, in
Tristan a cantat si cu Old Man’s Child.
Nocturnal Breed.
 Tjodalv a facut partiturile de chitara pe primul album Dimmu, "For All Tid".
 Galder a purtat pseudonimul Grusom pana ce a fost lansat excelentul produs Old Man’s
Child, "The Pagan Prosperity".

Biography of Band
The name Dimmu Borgir is taken from a large area of unusually shaped lava fields
east of Lake Mэvatn on Iceland. The word Dimmu means foggy or dark and Borgir
means castle or fortress. The band was originally formed in 1993 by Shagrath, Silenoz
and Tjodalv. Shortly Brynjard Tristan and Stian Aarstad also joined the band.

They began their musical career with the release of a 7" EP called "Inn I Evighetens
Mørke" ("Into The Eternity Of Darkness") in 1994. Within a few weeks it had already
sold out. In late 1994 they released their debut full-length album named "For All Tid"
("Forever"). This album featured contributions by Aldrahn from Dødheimsgеrd and
Vicotnik from Ved Buens Ende.

In 1996 they released one of the most important albums in black metal history namely
"Stormblеst" ("Stormwind"). This album showed the true talent of Dimmu Borgir with
mature song writing and a strong influence from classical music.
On the first two albums the band wrote all lyrics in Norwegian but after the release of
"Stormblеst" they switched over to English because of the increasing popularity of the
band.

In 1996 they released the "Devilsґs Path" MCD on Hot Records where Shagrath
worked, taking care of signing and promotion of the labelґs bands. Stian Aarstad did
not play the keyboards on this album since he had to serve in the army.

In 1997 they released "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" which was produced by Peter
Tдgtgren (Hypocrisy, Pain, The Abyss). This album was a huge success and it sold
more than 150,000 copies. Dimmu Borgir was now one of the biggest black metal
bands ever. The lyrics of "Tormentor of Christian Souls" were left out in the booklet
since Nuclear Blast did not want to be responsible for the printing of them.

After the recording of this album the band hired the Australian Astennu (Lord Kaos,
Carpe Tenebrum, The Kovenant) to play guitars on live shows so that Shagrath could
concentrate on his vocals. Astennu replaced Jens Petter who was a member of the
band for a short period between "Stormblеst" and "Enthrone…". After the
"Enthrone…" tour, Dimmu Borgir had a mini-tour where Tjodalv left the band for a
few months to be with his family and newborn child. His replacement was Aggressor
(Ved Buens Ende, Aura Noir), filling in as a session drummer. In the "Enthrone…"
tour, Stian Aarstad had trouble participating in some of the performances and was
fired from the band. Stian Aarstad has now joined the Norwegian black metal band
Enthral. After he left Kimberley Goss (Therion, Ancient, Sinergy) joined the band for
a very short time as a session keyboardist. She was replaced by the young Mustis who
was a friend of Shagrath. He played live with the band for the first time at the Dynamo
Open Air festival 1998.

In 1998 Nuclear Blast decided to re-release the debut album "For all Tid". This album
contains all of the original material and includes two songs from their 7" EP "Inn I
Evighetens Mørke". That very year Dimmu Borgir also released a MCD called
"Godless Savage Garden".

The next album "Spiritual Black Dimensions" was once again recorded at the famous
Abyss Studios with Peter Tдgtgren (Hypocrisy, Pain, The Abyss).

Tjodalv was replaced by well-known Nick Barker from
Cradle Of Filth.

In March 2000 the band was ready to start the recording of a new album. They had
booked The Abyss Studio but needed more time to finish the new material and also
suffered some financial problems. Nick was still living in London and could not afford
to come to Norway too often.

Blending black metal's most brutal tendencies, the melancholic beauty of opera, and industrial metal's
production techniques, Dimmu Borgir has carved a niche in the metal

world as one of the most savage and creative acts to hail from the Norwegian scene. The group first
started in 1993, when members Shagrath (vocals), Erkekjetter Silenoz (guitar), and Tjodalv (guitar and
drums) came together to join the emerging metal scene. Although some groups like Emperor and
Mayhem had already been making noise for a while, this next generation of groups was the first to
directly take their influence from their efforts. They drafted bassist Brynjard Tristan and keyboardist
Stian Aarstad into the fold and began their career with a 7" single, "Inn I Evighetens Morke."

The single sold out in a few weeks, inspiring the band to record a full-length album. Although their live
performances were starting to gain them a lot of attention, it wasn't until For All Tid's release in 1994
when they made their mark internationally. After some European touring and a few rave reviews from
metal publications, the band went back to the studio to work on their next album. The result, 1996's
Stormblast, was a step up from the primal debut album. Featuring stronger melodies and their first
attempts at the classical flourishes that would enhance their later work, the group again gained more
rave reviews. They were still in the shadow of many of their contemporaries, as landmark releases from
Cradle of Filth and Emperor were released around the same time. They suspected their use of
Norwegian may have been the cause, so Stormblast was also the last album to use their native
language to deliver the lyrics. They toured quite heavily behind the album and even released a single for
"Devil's Path" in between albums, but along the lines, they also lost Tristan and had to replace him with
Kovenant bassist Nagash.

When they did return to the studio, they recruited producer Peter Tagtren to record the monumental
Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, a landmark album in both scope and songwriting. Due to new label
Nuclear Blast's heavy marketing and distribution, the album sold much larger quantities than anything
they had produced before, and found them thrust to the forefront of the black metal movement. The
band was more than ready to take that responsibility and the following tour saw them pick up second
guitarist Astennu. They also fired longtime keyboardist Aarstad because of internal difficulties and
replaced him with future Sinergy frontwoman Kimberly Goss. She could only last through a part of the
tour due to contract responsibilities, and she was replaced by Mustis. Tjodalv also left the band after the
tour to be with his newborn child, and was replaced by Aggressor for a mini-tour after taking a break
from their Enthrone... promotion.

For All Tid was re-released in 1998 with "Inn I Evighetens Morke" added onto the track listing, while the
Godless Savage Garden EP was also released to tide over fans until the next album. The recording
sessions for Spiritual Black Dimensions came next and Tjodalv came back to the fold after his family
sabbatical. The album was released in 1999 to more praise from the metal media, as it revealed a
heavier and more complex vision than anything they had accomplished before. Nagash quit before any
touring could take place, but the band had asked bassist Simen Hestnaes from Borknagar to add
operatic vocals to the recordings anyway, so he slid into the role quite easily. The band also made a
split album with Old Man's Child around the same time, and the results were released as Sons of Satan
Gather for Attack in the same year. Tjodalv unexpectedly left the band after their 1999 tour, but Cradle
of Filth's Nick Barker was more than ready to step into his shoes and the tour resumed without a hitch.

In keeping with the spirit of their luck in the late '90s, the turn of the century saw Astennu fired from the
band before the recording of their next album. Financial and time constraints put off the recording
process until the fall of 2000 and in the meantime, they had drafted Galder from Old Man's Child to
become their new guitarist. Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia was the resulting album and the effort
was by far their most complicated release to date. Featuring a symphonic orchestra on almost the entire
album, the CD was an astonishing accomplishment in the world of black metal. The band toured behind
it, but the tragedies of September 11, 2001, cut short their plans to tour with Napalm Death in the States
and they had to stay in Europe. Still, they managed to release an EP and a DVD in their newfound
spare time and Barker and Galder could do work with their various side projects and other bands before
stepping back into the studio. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide

1. Mourning Palace

Daylight has finally reached it's end

As evenfall strikes into the sky
Far away in the dark glimpsing moonlight
Sickening souls cry out in pain

Whispering voices summoning screams

Waiting for Satan to bless their sins
Blackhearted angels fallen from grace
Possessed by the search for utter darkness

Hear the cries from the Mourning Palace

Feel the gloom of restless spirits
Hear the screams from the Mouring Palace
Feel the doom of haunting chants

Eternal is their lives in misery

Eternal is their lives in grief
Abandoned in a void of nothingness
A chain of anger, a fetter of despair

In this garden of depraved beings

This unsacred place of helpless ones
Satan blessed the creatures
Inswathed them in endless night

Whispering voices, summoning screams

Waiting for Satan to bless their sins
Blackhearted angels fallen from grace
Possessed by the search for utter darkness

10. A Succubus In Rapture

Illness and plagues, torture and blight

Is what she brings
Mocking holy standards, deceiving feeble fools
Is what she loves
Granted with powers, gifted with magic
Watching the world through raven eyes

Damned woman mischievous whore

Heretic princess
Devil's own

Her seductive elegance

Excites your weak flesh
Her diabolical beauty
Enchants your bewildered mind
You damn woman
You mischievous whore
You heretic princess
You are Devil's own

[performing an ecstatic dance:]

A serenade made out of black magic
She has learned to set souls afire
And makes sure that you never
Will leave it's trance
Her diabolical beauty
Enchants your bewildered mind

9. Arcane Life Force Mysteria

In perplexed dementia, where sanity is my vanity

With honour bear the mark of Satan
Triumphant beast in heaven defeat
Disguised in gloom, wear the mask of Satan

Ride the beast through paradise

Still vipers these mortal burdens
We arise as the portals take form
I leave my feathers again

Infidels and scarecrows all fallen from heaven

Captured by the sin of the beast
Mesmerized in total chaos
Engulfed in an overflow of selfish might

Swept through arcane mysteries

Forlorn in a maze of torment
Raped by the sanctity of the unholy
Reveals a Hell I never dreamed of

Bewildered by the arcane lifeforce mysteria-

I shed my skin once again

. Puritania

[Orginally released in 2001 on the album "Puritanical Euphoric

Misanthropia".]
[Music: Shagrath.]
[Lyrics: Silenoz and M.Lunde.]
[3:06]

We do away with your kind.

Countdown to exterminate the human race.
Four, three, two, one...

Let Chaos entwine on defenseless soil.

Remove errors of man and sweep all the weakening kind.

I am war, I am pain,
I am all you've ever slain.
I am tears in your eyes,
I am grief, I am lies.

Bygone are tolerance and presence of grace.

Scavengers are set out to cleanse the human filth parade.

I am pure, I am true,
I am all over you.
I am laugh, I am smile,
I am the Earth defiled.

I am the cosmic storms.

I am the tiny worms.
I am fear in the night.
I am bringer of the blight.

Successfully erased.

2. Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse

The battle raged on and on

Fuelled by the venom of hatred for man
Consistently, without the eyes to see
By those who revel in sewer equally

We, the prosperity of the future seal

Cloaked by the thunders of the north wind
Born to capture the essence of
The trails of our kind

Zero tolerance must be issued forth

Behind the enemy's line
So it shall be written
And so it shall be done

[repeat 1st and 2nd verse]

Discover and conceive the secret wealth

And pass it unto your breed
Become your own congregation
Measure the sovereignty of it's invigoration

We, who not deny the animal of our nature

We, who yearn to preserve our liberation
We, who face darkness in our hearts with a solemn fire
We, who aspire to the truth and pursue it's strength

Are we not the undisputed prodigy of warfare

Fearing all the mediocrity that they possess
Should we not hunt the bastards down with our might
Reinforce and claim the throne that is rightfully ours

Consider the god we could be without the grace

Once and for all
Diminish the sub principle and leave it's toxic trace
Once and for all

. Hybrid Stigmata - The Apostasy

The apparition of two faces in disgust

Invisible but yet so clear
Reflections seen by a fugitive
Trying to escape the looking glass
Blood runs from open wounds of false flesh
The one in front of the mirror exceeds the image
Eager to leave further but chained still

To crumble into such nothingness

A despairing fate, for your lies
To pretend is the lunatic's legacy
Privileged to bolt the nails of heresy

Born lifeless into a world of coma

As the chronic sufferer trapped in paradise lost
Missing insinuations of what life was meant to be
Angels and demons, a march man's bewildering hosts

[chorus:]
The charlatans and deceivers walk the line in prejudice
The narrow slits the veins in search for the crown
Profound impatience makes the blind struggle in stupidity
The paradox of the daily prayer, diffidence is Confiteor
Phenomena of ironies, cast the litany aside
How intelligible, blessed be the forgetful
Holding the banner high, unrestrained
Slowly abandoning the surface in contempt
Still in costumes to please the ways of living
Witnessing the details of defilement, intoxicating

Make sure to be pleased with the ways of your death

For in days of reckoning and when the twilight torn is ticking
Elysium is halfway and as an answer to the plea
You're destined to yield fragments of Hell in return

Leave unnoticed with the perfect conscience

With the strength of the spiritual eye
Spirits of the token unchained and free
Recover from the philanthropic macabre frenzy
The pale dove grins, black at heart ready to flee
Demon to some, angel to others

[music: Shagrath, Silenoz and Mustis]

13. Burn In Hell

[words: D. Snider]

Welcome to the abandoned land

Come on in, child; take my hand
Here there's no work or play
Only one bill to pay
There's just five words to say
As you go down, down, down

You're gonna burn in hell

Oh, burn in hell

You can't believe all the things i've done wrong in my life
Without even trying i've lived on the edge of a knife
Well, i've played with fire, but i don't want to get myself burned
To thine own self be true, so i think that it's time for a turn
Before i burn in hell
Oh, burn in hell
Take a good look in your heart; tell me what do you see?
It's black and it's dark, now is that how you want it to be?
It's up to you; what you do will decide your own fate
Make your choice now for tomorrow may be far too late

Hear no evil, don't you

See no evil, don't you
Lay no evil down on me
You're gonna burn in hell
Speak no evil, don't you
Think no evil, don't you
Play with evil, 'cause i'm free

[repeat second chorus]
