BE Culturally Competent
Tip #19: Seek Understanding

Cultural Competency Requires "Competency". Cultural competency

requires people to overcome fear and discomfort and become fluent
in four areas:
1. Knowledge - Factual information that replaces stereotypes
and generalizations about people from diverse backgrounds
and cultures. The more accurate information we have about
others, the more likely it is we will develop appropriate
opinions, feelings, and behaviors.
2. Understanding - Awareness and comprehension of how and
why people may see the same situation differently because
their cultural viewpoint differs from our own. The highest
level of understanding is empathy, the ability to make
connections with others on an emotional level and put
ourselves in other people's shoes.
3. Acceptance - Tolerance and respect that allows others the
same freedom of behavior and style that we expect for
ourselves. Ultimate respect sees value in having people
contribute from the perspective of their background and
culture. When our views of other people are not blemished
or tarnished by negative cultural or racial characterizations,
respect creates change through trust.
4. Behavior - Ability to interact effectively with others
different from ourselves. Ultimately, cultural competence is
expressed through words and actions, one person to another.
So as you think of ways to become more culturally competent in the
new year, consider the impact of knowledge, understanding,
acceptance, and behavior.  Be willing to step outside of your
comfort zone...you might be surprised of what you can learn from
someone who is different.

TAKE a Healthy Step

Strength training is a great compliment to aerobic training and helps
to prevent age-related bone and muscle-mass losses. Keep in mind
that strength training doesn't increase heart rate but does increase
stamina. Use it to target areas where muscle-tone is needed and don't
forget the other muscle groups.

Food for thought...

Rosemary is a herb that is used for both culinary and medicinal
purposes. The rosemary plant is native to the Mediterranean area, but
it is found in other regions such as France and even as far south as
South Africa. The herb rosemary can be utilized for a number of
purposes. It is commonly used to flavor foods. It can be purchased
fresh or dried and used to season foods. It is used in Mediterranean
cuisine and for barbecue. It is also used for a number of medicinal
purposes. Many people use the leaves and the flowers from the
rosemary to make both topical and oral solutions that can be used to
treat a number of conditions. Rosemary is a natural anti-fungal and
creams or tinctures can be made to treat ailments caused by bacterial
infections. This herb also has antioxidant properties making it very
useful for combating cancer causing carcinogens, and it is said to
protect the DNA from chemicals that can cause cancer.
