Grammar

 In American English, Past Simple is often used to provide information about the
activities that have just occurred.

Example:

-I lost my key. Can you help me look for it?

-I burned myself.

 In American English, Past Simple uses just and already.

a. Just indicates an activity that just happened and the effect is still felt.

Example:

-‘Would you like to eat something? ’‘ No, thanks. I just had lunch -‘Hello, I just arrived. '

b. Already is used to declare something that has happened earlier (earlier) than expected

Example:

-‘Don’t forget to post the letter. ‘Posted I already posted it.’

-‘When is Tom going to start his new job? ’‘ He already started.

 In American English also uses the Past Simple which is accompanied by yet

Yet in English it is used in the question of whether something has happened or done
and or when stated that something has not been done. Yet also shows that these
activities are expected to occur or be carried out.

Example:

-I didn't tell them about the accident yet.

-She did not come yet.

 In American English, use I have / I don't have / do you have? more commonly
used.

Example:

-We have a new car.

-We don't have a new car

-Do you have a new car?

 American English uses the definite article 'the' so that it becomes ‘... to the
hospital 'or is ... is in the hospital'.

Example:

-The injured man was taken to the hospital

-The injured man was in the hospital


 American English when saying ‘on a / the team’

Example:

-He is the best player on the team.

 Quite in American English means really

Example:

- 'Are you sure?' 'Yes, quite sure' (really sure)

 American English uses preposition ‘on 'on weekend weekend on the weekend / on
weekends.

Example:

-The office is closed on the weekend

-He has to work on weekends

 In American English to say 'different with' will use 'different than'.

Example:

-‘The tastes are different than mine

 Some verbs (verb), which are irregular in British English, are regular (regular) in
American English

 Collective noun is any noun that indicates a collection of individuals. The

Subjunctive is a basic verb of verb used after verbs, nouns, or


adjectives which show importance.

Verbs that use subjunctive: advise, ask, beg, command, decree,


demand, desire, insist, instruct, order, prefer, propose, recommend,
request,require, stipulate, suggest, urge, warn.

Nouns followed by subjunctive: advice, command, demand, insistence,


instruction, order, preference, proposal, recommendation,
request,requirement, suggestion.

Adjectives followed by subjunctive: imperative, important, essential,


(un)neces;sary, crucial, urgent.

Example :
-The doctor advised that my father stay at home for a home remedy

-The advice that my father stay at home for a home remedy is unavoidable.

-It is important that my father stay at home for a home remedy.

Vocabulary

The first complete dictionary of American English was completed in 1828


by a lawyer and lexicographer named Noah Webster. He was the one who
courageously stated that English in the United States was different from English in
the United Kingdom and its surroundings. Winston Churchill (who is proud of his
half-American nationality) once said that Britain and the United States are two
countries separated by one language with many similarities. Here are some

In American English the word :

 can and can not sound very similar

And many Americans have a tendency to reduce words by removing a few


letters. The word :

 "facts" for example in American English is pronounced the same as


the word "fax" - "t" is not pronounced.

In American English, the combination of letters :

 "cl" in words such as "cling", "climat", "club" etc., sounds more


fricative. You can produce this sound by tensing the vocal cords

Word emphasis is sometimes different. For example:

 the word "details" gets an emphasis on the letter "ai" in American


English.
