RESUME’

A resume’ is a tool that summarizes the applicant’s skills, educational


background, experiences, and other qualifications. Its functions include
the following:

1. It informs the employers of the skills that the applicant can bring
to the company.
2. It shows how qualified is the applicant for the job
3. It functions as a persuasive document which allows the applicant
to proceed to the interview stage.

What are the components of a resume’?

1. Contact Information – These include the applicant’s name,


address, contact number, and e-mail address. E-mail address
must be professional sounding. The name should be written in
bold face for emphasis with font size at 13 or 15. Never include
information about height, civil status, etc.

2. Education. – start with the most recent educational attainment,


include the name and address of the school, degree, specialization
and years attended or the year of graduation. Also include grade
point average if it is 90% and above, list of academic honors,
scholarships and extracurricular activities.

3. Skills. Show your skills through past events. Be clear with your
strengths and communicate them well. These may include
personal qualities such as “can adapt to the demands of the job”,
leadership skills, etc.

4. Professional Licensure and Certifications. Give the name of


certification, the rating received ( if it is high, do not include if
not that impressive) date issued, and place of issuance.

5. Honors and Awards. Cite a list of recognized achievements that


are related to work and disregard those which are not. Include
the title of the award, date given, and the award giving body or
organization.
6. Training. Start the list of training attended with the recent ones.
List only those which are related to the job applied. Including the
title of the training, organizer, date and venue.

TIPS ON MAKING AN EFFECTIVE RESUME’

A resume’ must look good and appealing to the prospective


employer. Below are specific tips how to do it right.

1. Align the content of your resume’ to the job description and job
requirements being applied for.

2. Do not write the word “RESUME’ “ on tope of your resume’.

3. Use a short clean bond paper.

4. Use distinctive heading and subheadings.

5. Use readable fonts such as Times New Roman and Book


Antiqua.

6. Use proper lay-outing for readability.

7. Print should be of laser quality.

8. Use only one side of the paper.


9. Do not include I.D. pictures unless required. If required, never
use scanned pictures.

10. Never mention about expected salary.

11. Use the reverse chronological order in writing a resume’.

12. Focus on your strengths and omit the weaknesses.

13. Be factual. Never exaggerate.

14. A resume’ is only one to three pages.

15. Edit and proofread your resume’. Never submit one with errors.

16. Avoid the use of “I”. Use the third person.

17. Target the resume’ to a potential employer.


18. Never send a resume’ without a cover or an application letter.

19. Use an active tone and powerful words such as “ achieved,


initiated, reduced, saved, conducted, etc.

20. Write only what is true to you.
