Technology is found in almost every aspect of our daily lives from cell phones, smart

tv’s, Alexa devices, to even smart fridges that can tell you when you’re out of milk. The main

goal of teaching young children is to ready them to take over the problems of the future and

prepare them to become functional members of society. Technology is the future, and all students

from now on need to be comfortable with using technology and the best way to do that is prepare

them in the educational system using the same technologies they will be interacting with for

decades to come.

According to the United Stated Department of Education, “To remain globally

competitive and develop engaged citizens, our schools should weave 21st century competencies

and expertise throughout the learning experience. These include the development of critical

thinking, complex problem solving, collaboration, and adding multimedia communication into

the teaching of traditional academic subjects”. (United Stated Department Of Education, 2017)

In order for us to follow the goals and beliefs of the US department of Education, it is a must to

have technology in our classrooms in order to keep our children competitive our future economy.

By taking away technology we are setting up our students for failure when they reach college

level education and the job market.

Technology gives students and teacher the ability to focus on the material and not get

bogged down in taking every single note. A teacher can now share her notes or slides digitally,

and the students can focus on the content. It also allows the teachers to spend more time

answering questions and be able to explain the topics more in depth. Technology in the

classroom is a huge benefit to students and teachers and without it, we will be setting up our

students for failure in their future.

Nevada Computer and Technology Standers is a document that utilizes the ISTE

(International Society for Technology Education) Standards for Students to build a foundation

for what students should learn along their journey of education. The ISTE Standards help lay out

7 major aspects of technology that a student should learn across their education and breaks it

down into specific subcategories. The Nevada Computer and Technology Standard breaks this

document down further on what specific goals should be achieved across different grade levels

with grade 12 being when students should be able to achieve all aspects of the ISTE standards.

The major difference between these documents is the Nevada standard has not yet been

updated to complete reach all of the current standards of ISTE. The Nevada Standard has not be

updated since 2010, and the main goals have been renamed, and there are 7 main goals now in

the ISTE versus 6 in the Nevada standard. This is important because Nevada needs to update

their standard to reach what is expected nationally to reach full potential.

Digital Citizen was goal 5 in 2010 while today it is goal 2 on ISTE’s website. They have

updated all of the sub categories to match the times, and focus on a more meaningful goal than in

2010. For instance, Digital Citizen, 2d, “Students manage their personal data to maintain a digital

privacy and security and are aware of data-collection technology used to track their navigation

online”. In 2010, data collection was miniscule compared to today, and securing your digital

identity is more important now than ever.

I will be using ISTE standard 3 Knowledge Constructor, more specifically 3a which

states, ”Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other

resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits”.

1. Planets of the Solar System

2. Grade Level: 3rd grade

3. ISTE Standard: 3a - Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate

information and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits

4. Science Objective E5B: Students understand that there are many components in the

Solar System include Earth

5. Objective: The student will learn about the 8 planets in our solar system by doing a

google image search, as well as a Wikipedia search on each planet and pasting one photo

of each planet, with the name underneath, and one fun fact about each planet.

6. Materials Needed: A computer and Microsoft Word for each student as well as an

internet connection

7. Suggested Group Size: Individual lesson

8. Procedure: For our lesson plan today, we will be learning about the solar system,

specifically the 8 planets that orbit our sun. We will be using computers and google.com

to research each planet, looking at pictures, and finding out a fun fact about each planet.

We will use Microsoft Word to copy and past each photo, as I will show you in a

demonstration how to do, as well as use Wikipedia to find 1 fun fact about each planet

which I would like you to write besides the picture. You will start of each fun fact with

the name of the planet, followed by the fact. The 8 planet names will be listed in order on

the board from closest to the sun, to furthest, so you have the correct spelling for your

google search.

9. Assessment: Each student must turn in a completed word document. They will be graded

out of 8, how many planets they turned in, as well as the correctness of their fun fact. If a

student gets more than 4 wrong, they must redo the project at home to be turned in.

The Solar System

1. Planet: Mercury

Fun Fact: Its orbit around the sun take 87.97 days, the shortest of all the planets in

the Solar System.

2. Planet: Venus

Fun Fact: Venus is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty.

3. Planet: Earth

Fun Fact: Earth’s axis of rotation is tilted with respect to its orbital place,

producing the seasons on Earth.

4. Planet: Mars

Fun Fact: The latter refers to the effect of the iron oxide prevalent on Mars’

surface, which gives it a reddish appearance distinctive among the astronomical

bodies visible to the naked eye.

5. Planet: Jupiter

Fun Fact: Jupiter is one of the brightest objects visible to the naked eye in the

night sky and has been known to ancient civilization since before recorded

history.

6. Planet: Saturn

Fun Fact: The planet’s most famous feature is its prominent ring system, which is

composed mostly of ice particles, with a smaller amount of rocky debris and dust.

7. Planet: Uranus

Fun Fact: IT has the coldest planetary atmosphere in the Solar System, with a

minimum temperature of 49K, and has a complex, layered cloud structure with

water thought to make up the lowest clouds and methane the uppermost layer of

clouds.

8. Planet: Neptune

Fun Fact: Neptune orbits the sun once every 164.8 years at an average distance if

30.1AU.
