Assignment 2
All figure numbers correspond to the question numbers. Remember to write the units (if any) along with values.
Either metric system or imperial system of units has been used. Do not get confused!

3. A 200-kg crate is to be supported by the rope-and-pulley arrangement shown. Determine the magnitude and
direction of the force P that must be exerted on the free end of the rope to maintain equilibrium. (Hint: The
tension in the rope is the same on each side of a simple pulley.)
4. Determine the normal reaction at the roller A and horizontal and vertical components at pin B for equilibrium of
the member.
5. Determine the x and z components of reaction at the journal bearing A and the tension in cords BC and BD
necessary for equilibrium of the rod.
6. Determine the support reactions at the smooth collar A and the normal reaction at the roller support B.
7. The wing of the jet aircraft is subjected to a thrust of T = 8 kN from its engine and the resultant lift force L = 45
kN. If the mass of the wing is 2100 kg and the mass center is at G, determine the x, y, z components of reaction
where the wing is fixed to the fuselage at A.

8. Using the method of joints, determine the force in each member of the truss shown. State whether each member
is in tension or compression.
9. Using the method of joints, determine the force in each member of the truss shown. State whether each member
is in tension or compression (Hint: Start from Joint D. No need to find the support reactions.)
10. Using method of sections, determine the force in members BC, HC, and HG. State if these members are in
tension or compression.
11. Using method of sections, determine the force in members HI, CH and CD of the truss. State if the members are
in tension or compression.

12. Determine the minimum horizontal force P required to hold the crate from sliding down the plane. The crate has
a mass of 50 kg and the coefficient of static friction between the crate and the plane is µs = 0.25.
13. The crate has a weight of W = 350 kN, and the coefficients of static friction is 0.3. Determine the friction force
on the floor if θ = 45° and P = 100 kN.
14. Determine the largest weight of the wedge that can be placed between the 8 lb cylinder and the wall without
upsetting equilibrium. The coefficient of static friction at A and C is 0.5 and at B is 0.6.
15. The uniform 20 lb ladder rests on the rough floor for which the coefficient of static friction is µs = 0.8 and
against the smooth wall at B. Determine the horizontal force P the man must exert on the ladder in order to cause
it to move.

16. The coefficients of static friction is 0.40 between all surfaces of contact. Determine the smallest force P required
to start the 30-kg block moving if cable AB (a) is attached as shown, (b) is removed.
17. The three bars A, B and C weigh WA = 20 kN, WB = 40 kN, and WC = 60 kN, respectively. If the coefficients of
static friction at the surfaces of contact are as shown, determine the smallest horizontal force P needed to move
block A.

18. A 40 kg packing crate is pulled by a rope as shown. The coefficient of static friction between the crate and the
floor is 0.35. If α = 40°, determine (a) the magnitude of the force P required to move the crate, (b) whether the
crate will slide or tip.
19. A 5° wedge is to be forced under a 1400 lb machine base at A. Knowing that the coefficient of static friction at
all surfaces is 0.20, (a) determine the force P required to move the wedge, (b) indicate whether the machine base
will move.
20. Determine the centroid, moments of inertia and product of inertia about the x and y axes.
21. Locate the centroid 𝑦 of the composite area. Also determine the moment of inertia of this area about the x’ axis.
22. Determine the moments of inertia and product of inertia of the quarter elliptical area with respect to the x and y
axes.
23. Determine the moments of inertia and product of inertia with respect to the x and y axes.
