Strengths of the lesson:

Mariam began her lesson by stating the objective for the lesson. This helped the students get
a clear understanding of what they were about to learn and what was expected from them.
Mariam reviewed the meaning of the addition sign. This helped prepare the students for how
they were to use that symbol throughout the lesson. Mariam modeled at a slow pace to make
sure the students were following along with each step needed to solve the problem. She did
well motivating the students by asking them who would be the one to come up with the right
answer. This created healthy competition in the classroom and more effort was given by the
girls because they wanted to be the one with the right answer. Having the students come up
to the board to model for the class, was another strength. Students watched carefully and
were even able to identify their own mistakes when numbers were written or read incorrectly.
Mariam also did well monitoring students while they were working in their small groups.

Areas for development:

One area for development is to make sure all students are focused while teaching is taking
place. Students will miss important information if they are engaged with someone or
something else at an inappropriate time. Consider a call and response from the students to
get their attention before moving on. It is okay to wait until everyone is focused on the
teacher. Another area for development is providing the students with a longer period of
time to work out problems. A little more “wait time” is needed so that every student has
time to process, solve and feel a sense of success because they completed that task.

A = Exceptional, B = Very Good, C = Satisfactory, D = Marginal and F = Unsatisfactory
