2010 a Stormy Year in Baltimore

From an historic blizzard, a convicted
mayor, taunting robocalls, the 2010 census
and a string of fires, the year culminating
the first decade of the 21st century was a
memorable one in Baltimore.
January brought the political fall of
Baltimore’s first Black female mayor Sheila
Dixon, who resigned after a two-month trial
resulted in her conviction on embezzlement
charges. The resignation ushered in City
Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake
as Baltimore’s new top leader. She quickly
enacted plans to tackle the city’s looming
$121 million deficit, proposing spending
cuts and tax hikes including a beverage tax
that charged 2 cents extra for drinks and a
contentious overhaul of the fire and police
pension. Both drew censure.

in Baltimore’s history, blanketed the area in
February, shedding over 50 inches of snow,
leaving residents trapped, businesses closed
and the city’s emergency crews stumbling.
Federal officials claimed the future
was “in our hands” as they conducted the
census. In Baltimore City, 68 percent of
residents participated, a 5 percent increase
from the last count, while 78 percent did
in Baltimore County, a 2 percent decrease
from 2000. Questions surfaced about City
Council President Jack Young’s residency
in East Baltimore, and Councilwoman Helen
Holton was removed as chair of the Taxation
and Finance committee for conducting
illegal campaign finance payments. A budget
proposal to close local pools and recreation
centers waged a war between residents and
local government. City officials eventually
allocated funds to keep the resorts open and
an individual donor stepped in to keep pools

number of standout figures in 2010.
News of their deaths sent shockwaves
throughout the public, as fans
mourned their losses. Here, the AFRO
remembers some of the nation’s most
recognized faces and the memories
they inspired.
Dorothy Height, 98
Thousands poured into the
Washington National Cathedral on
April 29 to honor Dorothy Height’s
legacy as a pioneering civil rights
leader and educator. Height served as
a past president of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority and was president emerita
of the National Council of Negro
Women, which she led for 40 years. At
her funeral, President Barack Obama
wept openly and said, “Dr. Dorothy
Height deserves a place in this
pantheon. She, too, deserves a place in
our history books. She, too, deserves a
place of honor in America’s memory.”
Vonetta McGee, 65
Vonetta McGee, a leading actress
in popular 1970s films Blacula and
Shaft died at a hospital in Berkeley,
Calif., on July 9 after suffering a heart
attack and spending two days on life
support.
Raymond Haysbert, 90
Raymond V. Haysbert Sr., the
pioneering community leader and
business giant behind Parks Sausage,
died May 24 at Baltimore’s Union
Memorial Hospital of congestive heart
failure, according to reports. Haysbert
was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, amid
abject poverty. After working for a
coal company, he joined the Army Air
Corps and was a fighter pilot with the
celebrated Tuskegee Airmen. By the
early ‘50s, Haysbert was working as
a business teacher in his home state.
In 1952, he’d settled in Baltimore to

company went public, and by the end
of the decade, Haysbert was named

Eunice W. Johnson, 93
Eunice W. Johnson, creator of the
Ebony Fashion Fair tour, died Jan. 3
at her Chicago home. She was one of
the first entrepreneurs to create and

She married John H. Johnson, founder
of the EBONY and Jet empire and was
responsible for naming the popular

Albertina Walker, 81
Often dubbed the “Queen of
Gospel,” vocalist Albertina Walker,
who spent six decades inspiring future
gospel artists and inspiring legions
of fans with songs like “Please Be
Patient with Me,” “Lord Keep Me Day
By Day” and “Walk Around Heaven,”
died Oct. 8.
Vonetta McGee Walker was born in Chicago and
began singing at the West Point
Baptist Church. Throughout her
teen years she performed with
various groups and was influenced
by celebrated gospel artist Mahalia
Jackson, with whom she later toured.
Walker founded The Caravans and
recorded over 60 albums. She was
nominated for 10 Grammy Awards
– winning one – and received three
Stellar Awards for her gospel music
contributions.
John H. Murphy, 94
John H. Murphy III, who was
remembered as a steady hand
that guided the Afro-American
Newspapers through the turbulent
waters of civil rights history and
a perilous industry, died Oct.16.
Murphy began his service to the
AFRO in 1937 and served in a
variety of positions until he retired
in November 1986, after 49 years
of service.  He started as the office
manager of the Washington AFRO,
took over as president in 1961 and
became chief executive officer in
1967. He was at the helm as president
and/or chairman of the board for 25
years.
Gary Coleman, 42
Former “Diff’rent Strokes” star
Gary Coleman died May 28 after
suffering an intracranial hemorrhage.
Known for his “What’chu talkin’ ‘bout
Willis” catch phrase, Coleman was
hospitalized May 26 after injuring his
head in a fall at his home near Salt
Lake City.
Born in Zion, Ill., Coleman was
recognized as one of entertainment’s
brightest stars during his childhood
appearance on “Diff’rent Strokes.”
Despite his promising career, Coleman
struggled to gain notoriety after the
show ended and faced a number of
health complications stemming from
an autoimmune kidney disease.
Walter Hawkins, 61
Walter Hawkins’ career spanned

Nonprofit Aims to ‘Amplify’ Baltimore

Community discussion series begins Jan. 8

Despite Baltimore’s list
of socioeconomic issues and
challenges, April Yvonne Garrett,
founder and president of the national
nonprofit organization Civic Frame,
believes the city retains a silver
lining.
“Every city has something
absolutely exquisite about it and I
think that there are so many things
exquisite about Baltimore,” Garret
said during a recent interview with
the AFRO. “But we as a people have
to have a collective will to highlight
those things, stand for those things
and push them forward.”
That’s why she’s spearheading
Civic Frame’s “Amplify Baltimore,”
a quarterly series of community
discussions that will explore some of
the city’s most challenging issues.
Kicking off Jan. 8, “Amplify
Baltimore” will combine some of the
city’s major leaders with residents
of the community to discuss issues
such as public health, urban farming,
neighborhood housing, financial
literacy and more.
Garrett, a Baltimore native,
created the event after realizing
that the city was in need of a public
forum for citizens to interact to
discuss and solve major issues.
Moreover, she explained that she
wanted to end complaints about
what the city is lacking.
“The big thing for me is to get
folks in Baltimore to stop having
conversations about what we aren’t,
what we’re not doing and what’s
bad about the city,” Garrett said.
“There’s a lot that’s great about
Baltimore and I think sometimes
we get stuck in [our] culture of
complaint and I just got tired of it.”
Garrett’s passion on the subject
is fueled by her love for her
hometown. After graduating from
Baltimore City College, she attended
and graduated from Columbia,
Kenyon and Harvard universities.
But ultimately, she moved back to
Charm City and jumpstarted Civic
Frame in 2002.
Since its inception, Civic Frame
has encouraged civic participation
through media arts and critical
thinking on a national platform. But
before any of the organization’s
programs and events could convene
in other cities, Garrett says that she
wanted to ensure Baltimore was first.
“My heart is here; I love this
town and I love these people and
even when we’re not doing our best
unto ourselves and for ourselves,
I think it’s really important for
individuals who know better to
take a stand and demand better,”
Garrett said. “It’s something that I’m
extraordinarily committed to.”

Teddy Pendergrass, 59
Noted for his soulful voice and sex symbol
status, Teddy Pendergrass rose to the height
of fame during the ‘70s and ‘80s with hits
like “Turn Off the Lights” and “Love T.K.O.”
He began his music career as the lead singer
for the group Harold Melvin and the Blue
Notes and launched his self-titled solo album
in 1977. Tragedy struck the crooner in 1982
after an automobile accident left him paralyzed
from the waist down, but Pendergrass
continued to record music and eventually
returned to the stage in 1985 for a Live Aid
concert in Philadelphia.
In 1998 Pendergrass founded the Teddy
Pendergrass Alliance, a national organization
dedicated to improving the lives of individuals

Manute Bol, 47
One of the tallest players to ever appear
in the NBA, Manute Bol was both an athlete
and an activist. The Sudanese-born celebrity,
whose name means “special blessing,” was
drafted by the Washington Bullets in 1985,
making him the first African-born player in the
NBA. He played basketball for 10 years and
along with the Bullets, was a member of the
Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and
Miami Heat. He is the only player in league
history to block more shots than he scored.

events that raised money for his war-ravaged

Celebrated for her beauty and talent, Lena
Horne appeared in films Cabin in the Sky
and Stormy Weather and began her career in
entertainment as a teen at the famed Cotton
Club in New York. Despite her talent, racism
stifled Horne’s career and her film scenes were

major urban jurisdictions,

“African Americans are a
large part of the population
in several of the states that
are losing representatives,”
said Margaret Simms, a
fellow at The Urban Institute
in Washington. “But they
are also a large part of the
population in several states
that will gain seats.”
The results of this year’s
population count reveal that,
as of this past spring, the
United States is a nation of
more than 308 million people.
At the same time, America’s
once staggering population
growth also dipped to its
lowest in seven decades.
But not to worry,
according to a spokesman
for the Washington, D.C.-
based Population Reference
Bureau. “We have a youthful
population that will create

just 16 miles from the nation’s
capital of Port-au-Prince. The

reported that approximately
230,000 people died, and over
a million were left homeless.
It also reported that 30,000
commercial buildings were no
longer usable.
The world wide response
to the crisis was amazing,
with a multitude of
organization and government
pledging money and other
resources to rescue people and
assist with rebuilding. This
has not turned into a reality
for the country – many of the
pledges resources have still
not been delivered.
Almost a year later, the
majority of those displaced
by the devastating earthquake
still reside in shelters, in
temporary tents and other
makeshift housing.
The earthquake was not
the only reason Haiti was
in the news this year. This
was an election year for the
country, and the process
was postponed because of
the earthquake. Along with
senators and deputy seats to
be selected, a new president
was to be selected.

failed because he did not meet
the qualifications. But by the

In celebration of the holiday season and as one of the many community-based

initiatives carried out through the year, the Gardner Law Group (GLG) of Baltimore
presented its “5th Annual Gardner Law Group Holiday Toy Drive.” For the past four
years, Paul W. Gardner, managing partner of the Gardner Law Group,
has orchestrated this festive charity event intended to collect
donations of new, unwrapped toys to distribute to underprivileged
families during the holiday season.
Despite the heavy snowstorm and traffic gridlock, over
600 attendees from all over the Maryland, District and
Virginia area came out to network, celebrate, and donate
toys, gifts and money to families in need.

The Baltimore County Alumnae Chapter (BCAC) of Delta Sigma Theta

Sorority introduced 21 debutantes and one beau to the community at
the chapter’s 24th Annual Beautillion-Cotillion at the Valley Mansion in
Cockeysville.
Four hundred guests, including sorority members, family and friends,
gathered to celebrate the event.

Debutantes and The Beautillion-Cotillion is one of the chapter’s signature events. The

Shake Funk
The late June drafting of

point guard John Wall infused
the city with new life. With
new ownership and a new
lead guard in town, Wizards
fans had a reason to forget
the previous campaign’s
26-56 record. A summer
league filled with misleading
highlights continued to
pump blood in the
veins of Wizards
watchers, as Wall
quickly impressed and
became the central
figure in the team’s
turnaround attempt.
Once the official
tipoff began, however,
hope quickly
dissipated. A 1-4 start
to the season was
just a sign of things
to come. Injuries to
Wall kept the rookie
in and out the lineup,
and a December
trade finally ended
the Gilbert Arenas
era. Washington currently
finds itself last in the NBA
Southeast Division and may
struggle to match last season’s
futile record.
Baltimore Ravens
Remained Winners in 2010
Meanwhile, further
north on Interstate 295, the
Baltimore Ravens remained
the most successful team in
the Maryland region, earning
yet another winning season.
The Ravens will head to the
playoffs for a third straight
year, a first in team history.

record, their sixth straight

teammates Sackie Kerkulah
and Willie Carter were
selected to the all-conference
second team.
Meanwhile, Howard’s
basketball squad hired new
head coach Kevin Nickelberry
to pull the struggling Bison
team out of its multi-year
losing funk. Unfortunately,
the Bison saw team captain
Calvin Thompson and star
recruit Theodore Boyomo
suffer season-ending injuries
before the season could even
begin. Howard is currently
facing a 10-game losing
streak to start the New Year.
But while the Bison
struggles, Morgan State
University’s basketball team
currently holds a 4-5 overall
record so far this season.

NFL’s Super Bowl—This NFL season has truly been
one of the most tightly contested campaigns in the league’s
recent history. There are more than 10 teams that will
potentially finish with at least 10 wins this season, including
the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints.
The Saints join the Atlanta Falcons and Michael Vick’s
Philadelphia Eagles as the cream of the crop in the NFC
conference, but most of the NFL’s heavy hitters reside in the
AFC conference. Look for Tom Brady and the New England
Patriots, the New York Giants, the Pittsburgh Steelers or
the Baltimore Ravens to bring the Super Bowl’s Lombardi
Trophy back to the AFC.
NBA Finals—The Miami Heat became instant favorites
among many basketball fans after superstar LeBron James
decided to “take his talents to South beach” this offseason
and team up with former Finals MVP Dwyane Wade. But the
Heat will still have to get by Boson Celtics and Los Angeles
Lakers, who featured in 2010’s epic seven-game Finals. Kobe
Bryant and the Lakers edged Boston for their second straight
championship, and are looking to “three-peat.” But Boston
added depth to their own star studded cast, signing Shaquille
O’Neal to join Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.
Don’t be surprised if we have a repeat Finals performance of
the Lakers vs. Celtics.
College Football Championship—Auburn quarterback
Cameron Newton has done his best to dazzle America. The
ultimate weapon on the football field, a quarterback who can
run and throw, Newton’s Heisman Trophy wasn’t a fluke. He
thoroughly dissected opponents all season, helping Auburn tie
a school record for wins with 13 and ringing up scoreboards
in the process. Headed by Newton, Auburn scored over 49
points seven times this year and finished sixth in the NCAA
in scoring. However, they’ll need every point against their
BCS Football Championship opponent, Oregon in January’s
No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup. Oregon finished first in scoring this
season, averaging 49.3 points per game, outracing teams to a
12-0 record.
Oregon became a featured attraction this year as their
offense was simply too much for teams. It’ll be the legs of
Newton vs. the speed of Oregon on Jan. 10 for a chance for
collegiate supremacy. While dominant, Newton’s one-man
band might not be enough to combat the quicks of Oregon as
the school will likely take home its first national title.
College Basketball Championship—While the college
basketball season is still early, parity seems to be the universal
theme so far. Yes, Duke, the reigning 2010 champions, is
still tops in the land, but it’s not as obvious as last year’s
tournament run showed. Ohio State, Kansas, Connecticut and
Syracuse have played impressive through the season’s first
couple of months and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see some
combination of the aforementioned school’s in this year’s
Final Four. But it’s something about Duke that just seems
favorable. Maybe it’s the combination of skilled shooters and
rotating defense. Maybe it’s the tradition or prominent head
coach Mike Krzyzewski. Whatever it is, Duke remains as the
favorite to bring home another title until they are dethroned.

“Go West, Young Man!”- John B. L. Soule. I love the eastside. Years ago, the
hottest nightspots in Baltimore – Lamppost, Wooden Nickel, Birdcage, Federal
Lounge and Kozy Korners – were in East Baltimore. When eastside’s Selena Redd,
Willard Wright and I get together, we joke that west-siders come east but east-siders
don’t cross Charles Street. Did I hear someone say, “you got that right?” If you see
Selena in West Baltimore other than at Martin’s, holla!
