Music Lesson Plan

Title: Playing Instruments to Clap Stomp and Chomp Grade Level: 1st

Materials needed: Syllable song, drum, shaker, and triangle


Procedure:

A.S: “So class we have learned about syllables these past few weeks, and today we are going to
use syllables in our music class. Can anyone remind me of what a syllable is? How many
syllables are in the word dog? What about the word student? Now what about in the word
syllable? Today we are going to listen to a song that has words with different amounts of
syllables, so we are going to listen carefully to the ques in the song, and we are going to drum
and shake to the syllables in the words in the song.”

1. Play a small part of the song to help students get the timing down.
2. “For the clapping part of the song, we will drum. For the stomp we will shake the shaker. For
the chomp we will use the triangle/symbol.
3. Play the song and play the instrument with the corresponding part.
4. Call out when it’s time to switch instruments.

Closure: “Who can remind us of what a syllable is? What were some words we heard in the song
that had one syllable? Two? Three?

Educational Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will have learned . . . how to identify
syllables in different words by using music and instruments.
