UNIT I: UNDERSTANDING ELEMENTS AND

CHARACTERISTICS OF TRENDS

What is Trends?

Trend is a general, development of change in a situation or in the way

that people are behaving.

 A trend simply reflects what seems to be going around at any given

time.
 A trend can be in any area and doesn't only reflect fashion, pop culture
and entertainment.
 There can also be a trend in the stock market to be bullish or bearish,
depending on economic indicators, or a political trend reflecting a
nation's current mood.
 Some trends are fun, some fabulous, some appalling, but however long
they last, you can be sure there will always be a new trend coming
along to replace the old.
 The pattern to determine a trend in any issue must pass the basic test
of significance so that it can create change to wide range of people
and have broad social, economic, and political implications.
 A significant characteristic of a trend is its capacity to make sudden
surprise and reversals that we can see around us.

ELEMENTS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF A TRENDS

 A trend lasts much longer and has greater impact on society.

 Identifying a trend helps us to plan ahead effectively for the future.

 We can introduce successful initiatives based on these trends.

 Trends overlap and interlock, reinforcing each other.

 Trends can also run counter to each other and cancel each other out.

 Identifying a trend begins with environmental scanning or engaging in

the process of gathering information.

 In spotting a trend, we seek out current opinion, look and listen for new
ideas and new practices that can propel change.

 Scanning for a trend demands depth and breadth of analysis. It cover a

wide spectrum of sources in order to reveal events in the community of
what is commonly known and commonly thought important.
