Homework 3 Worksheet

1. A house has a composite wall of wood, fiberglass insulation, and plaster board, as indicated in the sketch. On
a cold winter day, the convection heat transfer coefficients are h o = 60 W/(m2 · K) and hi = 30 W/(m2 · K). The
T ,o
total wall surface area is 350 m2. The temperature of the outside air is –10oC. Determine the total rate

of heat loss through the wall. (The thermal conductivity of the fiberglass blanket is
kb  0.038 W/(m  K) ,

the thermal conductivity of the plywood siding is

k s  0.12 W/(m  K) , and the thermal conductivity of the
k p  0.17 W/(m  K)
plasterboard is . These values could be found in a Table in the back of the textbook.)

T1 T2 T3 T4

(a.) Determine the total rate of heat loss through the wall.
(b.) Determine the temperature of the wall where the glass fiber blanket and plywood siding come
into contact, T3.
(c.) What is the rate of heat transfer through the glass fiber blanket?
(d.) What is the rate of heat transfer from the outside surface of the wall (at T4) to the outside air at
T ,o
?

2. Steam at T1  320 C flows in a 2-meter-long cast iron pipe ( k  80 W / (m  C ) ) whose inner and
o o

outer diameters are D1 = 5 cm and D2 = 5.5 cm, respectively. The pipe is covered with 3-cm-thick

glass wool insulation with k  0.05 W / (m  C ) . Heat is lost to the surroundings, which are at
o

T 2  5o C , by natural convection and radiation, with a combined heat transfer coefficient of

h2  18 W / (m 2  oC ) . The heat transfer coefficient inside the pipe is h1  60 W / ( m 2  oC ) .
(a.) Determine the rate of heat loss from the steam to the pipe.
(b.) Determine the temperature drop across the pipe shell (the cast-iron alone).

(c.) Determine the temperature drop across the insulation.

3. Consider a 0.8-m-high and 1.5-m-wide double-pane window consisting of two 4-mm-thick layers of
glass (k = 0.78 W/(m K)) separated by a 10-mm-wide stagnant air space (k = 0.026 W/(m K)). On a
T  21o C
cold day, the temperature of the room is maintained at i , and the temperature of the
o
inner surface of the window is 15.2 C. The convection heat transfer coefficients on the inner and

outer surfaces of the window to be 1

h  10 W / ( m2  oC ) and h2  40 W / (m 2  oC ) , respectively,
which includes the effects of radiation.
(a.) Determine the rate of heat transfer through the window. Use the shortest calculation route
possible.
(b.) Determine the temperature of the air outside the window, To .

4. Consider a 5.04-m-high, 8-m-long, and 0.22-m-thick wall whose representative cross-section is as

given in the figure. The cross-section represents a 12-cm-high section of the 5.04-m-height, with the
pattern repeating for the entire height of the wall. The thermal conductivities of various materials
used, in W/m°C, are ka = kf = 2, kb = 8, kc = 20, kd = 15, and ke = 35. The left and right surfaces of the
wall are maintained at uniform temperatures of 300°C and 100°C, respectively. Assume that contact
resistance between the materials is negligible, and assume that negligible heat transfer occurs
vertically between the plates.
(a.) Determine the total thermal resistance through the 12-cm-high section of the wall.
(b.) Determine the total thermal resistance through the entire 5.04-m-high wall.
(c.) Determine the total rate of heat transfer through the wall.
(d.) Determine the temperature at the point where sections B, D, and E meet.
(e.) Determine the temperature drop across Section F.
