CHAPTER 01 Q&A - RELUX TUTORIAL AND IS STANDARDS FOR

LIGHTING

1. Question No :1

While designing whether we need to consider natural light, windows, door etc? in this chapter we have
wall, if wall is replaced with glass partitions is there any changes in procedure?

Ans : Usually while designing we don’t consider natural light, but it is possible to design the lighting
system by taking actual lux level at different time of the day. In such cases the light points are arranged
so that a group of lights can switch on for achieving different lux level at different time of the day.
(You can refer to the advanced lighting solution such as Human Centric Light (HCL) for more
information.)

For different surfaces, reflection of light is different so while designing we can consider
windows, doors, wall (glass or brick) etc at the input stage of simulation.

2. Question No :2

Why the maintenance factor is considered as 0.8 ?

finding numbers of light fixtures and finding lux level , which one is better for an office building, here
the presentation says about both we can finding by relux

Ans : Please refer to IS 3646 (part-1) 1922 - 6. - LIGHTING MAINTENANCE AND LIGHT LOSS
FACTOR SCHEDULE ( already shared in the chapter).

a) Clean area - 0.9 (MF)

b) Average Area - 0.8 (MF)
c) Dirty Area - 0.7 (MF)

While designing, we need to focus on lux level required at a room as per IS standards. The light
fixtures are selected so as to meet the required lux level and aesthetics of the room.

3. Question No :3

In execution level we are facing situation like changing the position or number of lights fixtures
regarding the site conditions, so is there any error factor needed to be considered, if so up to what
extent we are able follow the rule? (I mean perc of difference).or should we go for new design ?

Ans : Actually there is no thumb rule for that. Change in light fixture number and location may affect
the lighting arrangements and lumen output so it is better to consult our design team.

4. Question No :4

What measures to be considered for designing of outdoor lighting?

Ans : Outdoor lighting refers to the outdoor illumination of private gardens , public landscapes, road,
parking areas. The design for above mentioned areas may vary according to the site conditions and the
general design considerations may depend on safety, night time aesthetics, accessibility, security, social
and event uses.
