Kartilya ng Katipunan is a set of principles that shows the path on how each and every
one of us must live of lives by living to the fullest through good values. This Kartilya ng
Katipunan was made to change the thoughts of every Filipino’s unacceptable behavior.
Katipunan was not just an organization working towards the freedom of the Filipinos.
They built on the ideological and political foundation constructed by men and women
who sacrificed themselves because of their love for the country and for the people. Just
like Rizal who pushed Filipinos to think critically with full understanding, this code of
conduct was made to inform people of what they deserve to know for making their lives
better.
The journey to freedom in the past is long and hard. The price of bravery and principle is
high. And through Kartilya ng Katipunan, Filipinos were united to fight for what they
own. Kartilya ng Katipunan became an oath the every Katipuneros must follow to show
their determination in being a part of the people who wanted a change.

The Kartilya ng Katipunan can somehow relate to the core values of Centro Escolar
University, the following are some of the examples that I have observed:

#1: The life that is not consecrated to a lofty and reasonable purpose is a

tree without a shade, if not a poisonous weed.

The First code of conduct simple tells us that we must have a purpose-driven life. We
must know how to set our goals and find meaning to our life because without knowing
our purpose, we will suffer from unwanted situations.

Caring for others and empowering them are part of the CEU’s core value. As an
Escolarian, the reason why I keep on studying is not just for nothing nor not just only to
fulfill my dreams and goals but also to help others with the knowledge that I’ve acquire
in the institution. And as a Dentistry student my purpose is not only to become a Dentist
in the near future but to contribute to the general health of the public as well as to
improve the lives of those around me.

As a future dentist patient empowerment puts the patient in the heart of services. It is
about designing and delivering health and social care services in a way, which is
inclusive and enables citizens to take control of their health care needs.

#3:It is rational to be charitable and love one's fellow creature, and to

adjust one's conduct, acts and words to what is in itself reasonable.

It gives us the real definition of true act of kindness – Being kind is simply seen by the
service and love one gives to his/her fellowmen without asking anything in return.
Kindness is a behavior marked by ethical characteristics, a pleasant disposition, and a
concern for others and it is the quality of being friendly, generous and considerate. CEU
promotes kindness, compassion and empathy. The university’s goal is not only to provide
a quality education but a virtue that probably other university doesn’t have. In Dentistry
Department, They give free dental consultations and medicines to the
communities.Providing volunteering opportunities to dental professions to freely share
their expertise and time to those in need and providing volunteering opportunities to the
students, faculty, and staff by distributing medicines, food that may help the less
fortunate and other member of the community.

#4: Whether our skin be black or white, we are all born equal: superiority
in knowledge, wealth and beauty are to be understood, but not superiority
by nature.

The 4th rule highlights EQUALITY. We are all born to be equal no matter what race,
status, and educational background we have. Our society may have divided us into
groups but we must all understant that no one is a superior of anyone.

Status and Identity will never be the reason for unequal treatment of students in the
University. Whether they are Filipinos or not, rich or poor, men or women, and white or
black, everyone is free to enter the university. Also, multicultural is predicated in the
university for all students, regardless of culture, and it strives to remove barriers to
educational opportunities and success for students from different cultural backgrounds. It
also gives us students the opportunity to examine our own social and cultural biases,
break down those biases, and change perspective within our own setting.

Regardless of the differences of the students, CEU professors and instructors provide a
high quality of education to all the students and treat them like their own children.

#6: To the honorable man, his word is sacred

The rule 6 tells us that we must be a man of our own words. Whatever said must be done.
We must do things that we promised because we can never take back what we have been
said so ” walk the talk “.

The sixth rule is about doing the “walk the talk” concept or putting into action the words
that has been promised. “A Katipunero who has a sense of shame must be a man of his
own word.”. Just like the Katiponeros, Escolarians acquire accountability, integrity, and
trustworthiness. These values might be a big help to us students in the near future
because person who has integrity lives his or her values in relationships with coworkers,
customers, and stakeholders. Honesty and trust are central to integrity. Acting with honor
and truthfulness are also basic tenets in a person with integrity.

#13: Man is not worth more because he is a king, because his nose is
aquiline, and his color white, not because he is a *priest, a servant of God,
nor because of the high prerogative that he enjoys upon earth, but he is
worth most who is a man of proven and real value, who does good, keeps
his words, is worthy and honest; he who does not oppress nor consent to
being oppressed, he who loves and cherishes his fatherland, though he be
born in the wilderness and know no tongue but his own.

The thirteenth principle is about having the right character and good values. A Man’s life
is not measured by what is his status in life nor with the things that he possess. Instead, it
is in his character and his love for the native land.

Centro Escolar University’s maxim is Ciencia y Virtud which means Science and
Virtue. This shows that escolarians are not only trained in academic aspects but also in
having good conduct and values. Not all universities offer this kind of learning
experience. CEU makes sure that the students will not only bring pride and success to the
country but will also contribute into spreading good values to every person they will
come across with. I believe that a good student will be a better citizen of this country if
his or her academic performance was not the only thing monitored and improved during
educational life but also the values part. The university’s goal is to have their students
maintain a high standard of learning as well as a good principle to follow. Centro Escolar
University is committed to provide quality education effectively and efficiently through a
continuously improved organizational system consisting of individuals imbued with
professionalism and strong sense of caring, service, and cooperation.
