PORTAL FRAME METHOD:

Assumptions:
1. The frame is divided into independent portals.
2. Point of inflection occurs at mid-height of each
column. Thus, moment at each mid-height of
column is zero.
3. Point of inflection occurs at mid-span of each beam
or girder. Thus, moment at mid-span of each beam
and girder is zero.
4. Horizontal shear at a given story is distributed
among the columns such that each interior column
resists twice as much as each exterior column.

SAMPLE PROBLEMS:
SPO1: Analyze completely the loaded frame shown. Use Portal Frame
Method.

SOLUTION:
1. Compute Shear Forces on each column
Considering the 2nd level:

NOTE: Joints a, b and c are inflection points. Thus, bending

moments on those points are zero.

CANTILEVER METHOD:

Assumptions:
1. Point of inflection occurs at mid-height of each
column. Thus, moment at each mid-height of
column is zero.
2. Point of inflection occurs at mid-span of each beam
or girder. Thus, moment at mid-span of each beam

3. The axial force in each column is directly
proportional to its distance from the center of
gravity of all columns on that level.

PROBLEM: (To be compiled as part of the Major Plate)

Using Portal Frame Method, analyzed completely two (2) critical
frames on your respective Four Storey Commercial Building. Consider
the following parameters.

1. Critical frames consist of one (1) critical frame along transverse

direction and one (1) critical frame along longitudinal direction.
2. Base Shear should be distributed among frames with the assumption
that frames have the same stiffness. See discussion below.

Along Longitudinal Direction

For example, the computed values of F4, F3, F2
and F1 are 350 KN, 250 KN, 200 KN and 100 KN
respectively. Since the number of frames along
longitudinal axis is five (5) and assuming that the
frames have the same stiffness, then, the seismic
load per level per frame are 70 KN, 50 KN, 40 KN
and 20 KN.

Along Transverse Direction

Considering the same values of F4, F3, F2

and F1; since the number of frames along
transverse axis is seven (7) and assuming
that the frames have the same stiffness,
then, the seismic load per level per frame are
50 KN, 35.71 KN, 28.57 KN and 14.28 KN.

THANK YOU!
