Answer all questions.

1. Find the marked currents, I1 , I2 and I3 , in the following circuit (Fig.1) using mesh analysis.

2. Find the current through RL using superposition theorem.

3. Find the equivalent Thevenins circuit across RL in the following circuit. Also draw the
equivalent Nortons circuit mentioning the different parameters. What should be the value
of RL so that maximum power is transferred to it from the sources?

4. In the arrangement shown in Fig.4, (a) calculate the impedance between AB and the power
factor of the circuit; (b) Find active and reactive power consumed by the resistor connected

between AC and the inductor connected between CE respectively; (c) Draw phasor diagram of
the circuit. Indicate Vs , VAE , VEB , VAC , VCE , and Is in the phasor diagram; (d) Find the
value of the capacitor or inductor that needs to be connected in parallel across AB to bring
the power factor unity.

5. The circuit constants of Fig.5 are so adjusted that the currents in the parallel branches AB
are equal, and the magnitude of voltage across AB is equal to that across BC and the voltage
VBC is leading the voltage VAB by 90o . When a voltage of 200V is applied to AC, the total
power absorbed is 1200W. Calculate the circuit constants.

6. (a) Explain with phasor diagram, how the total active power consumed by a 3-phase balanced
capacitive-load can be measured by two-wattmeter method. (b) Draw line-current phasors and
line-voltage phasors for the circuit shown in Fig.6. What is the wattmeter reading?

7. The magnetic circuit shown in Fig.7 is cast iron with a mean length 0.44m and square section
0.02m×0.02m. The air gap length is 2mm and the coil contains N=400 turns. Find current
I required to establish an air-gap flux 0.141mWb. B-H characteristics of cast iron is given in
Fig.8. Take µ0 = 4π × 10−7 H/m.

8. For the magnetic circuit shown in Fig.9 the reluctance of the central limb (PS) is 10×105 AT/Wb
and the reluctance of the outer limbs (PTS and PQS) are same and equal to 15×105 AT/ Wb.
Find the mmf required to produce 0.5mWb flux in PQS.
