OmniScan MX2 Training Program

Group Setup Wizard

OmniScan MX2 Training – Group Setup Wizard Overview
u The setup wizard is the second wizard in our process after the
material and weld overlay have been created in the part and
weld wizard.
u The setup wizard is where groups are created and modified.
u The wizard will walk the user through each step for group
creation to include:
– Create, modify, or copy a group.
– Selection of phased array or conventional UT.
– Probe and wedges selection.
– Pulser configuration.
– Scanner offsets (If needed).
– Probe orientation (Normally 90 or 270).
– Continuation for focal law or finish.

OmniScan MX2 Training – Group Setup Wizard Overview
u Each step in the wizard process is completed prior to selecting next. Each task is
explained in the next series of slides. Below is the entire group wizard
progression.

3
Group Setup Wizard – Create\Modify\Delete Group Overview cont.
u The MX2 is capable of eight groups that can be any combination of phased array,
conventional PE, or conventional PC (Pitch-catch) including TOFD.
u The total of all A-scans or focal laws on all groups cannot exceed 256.
u For two-probe two-sided inspections the “Copy group” function can be used to create
a mirror group identical to the first where only the skew and offset need be changed.
u There are three possibilities for group creation that are related to what type of probe
and connector is used, and what type of module is available:
1. Phased array group using the PA connector.
2. Conventional UT using the PA connector through an adaptor. (See conventional UT section)
3. Conventional UT using the BNC connectors of a compatible module. (First generation modules do not
allow simultaneous use with PA. See conventional UT section)

4
OmniScan MX2 Training - Group Setup Wizard - Probe Selection
u Probe selection is available in the setup
wizard and the Menu>Group
Probe\Part>Probe submenu.
u The MX2 will read the following
information from the chip in the connector
of Olympus probes when the probe auto
detect is on:
– Probe Model.
– Probe Frequency.
– Probe Element Quantity.
– Probe Element Pitch.
– Reference Point.
– Serial Number (Not displayed).
u This allows rapid population of the group
wizard (Focal law calculator) and ease of
use.
u With auto detect off, custom and probes
from manufacturers other than Olympus
can be entered and saved in the MX2
database.
5
OmniScan MX2 Training - Group Setup Wizard – Wedge Selection
u Wedge selection is available in the
setup wizard and the Menu>Group
Probe\Part>Wedge submenu.
u Wedges are selected from a
database.
u New or custom wedges can be
created and saved.
u This allows rapid population of the
group wizard (Focal law calculator)
and ease of use.
u Care must be taken for wedge
selection as one wedge may have
many entries based on probe model
and probe position for the same
housing type.

6
Group Setup Wizard – Scanner Offsets \ Probe Position
u The offsets for Scan and Index are related to one line scans for encoded inspections
using a scanner and are not required for manual inspection. These are covered in a
later section.
u The probe skew is defined as the orientation of the probe relative to the scan axis
(Mechanical movement axis). For a typical weld inspection this is defined as skew
90 and 270. For manual inspection, it is not necessary to change the default skew.
For manual inspection the index offset value is not entered until a flaw is found.

7
Group Setup Wizard – Scanner Offsets \ Probe Position
u For manual inspection where the probe position is controlled by the
user and not a scanner, these variables are not required or relevant
and the default values should be accepted.

8
Group Setup Wizard – Inspection Mode \ Pulser Identification
u OmniScan MX2 acquisition modules have one 128 pin probe connector.
u When more than one phased array probe is connected through the use of a Y splitter
or adapter, auto detect must be off and the position of the first element of each probe
must be identified in the software.
u For a one probe manual inspection the pulser position will always be 1.
u For a two probe inspection with a 2 X 64 (XX:128) compatible splitter the probes are
identified by pulser 1 (1-64) and pulser 65 (65-128).
u For a two probe inspection with a 2 X 32 (16:64) compatible splitter the probes are
identified by pulser 1 (1-32) and pulser 33 (33-64).
u The receiver pulser is enabled when using conventional probes or the MX2
acquisition module is enabled for phased array pitch-catch. (PR option).

1, 33, or 65
